Curse Launches an Official Digital Digital Toolset for Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition

Curse has launched D&D Beyond – an official digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition.

For over 40 years, Dungeons & Dragons has ruled the TRPG market, bringing players together at tables all over the world. D&D Beyond, our new digital companion web app, aims to enhance the D&D experience by making game management easier by putting all of the game information you need to tell fantastic stories with your friends into a digital format, eliminating the need to manually search through books, and taking the load off of players through other features.

At launch, D&D Beyond offers a compendium with all the game rules, lore, and adventures, as well as sought-after tools like a character builder and an interactive digital character sheet. It’s built with official D&D content and the ability to create and add your own custom homebrew spells, magic items and monsters. Groups can play with digital versions of every official D&D sourcebook within the compendium. They can build characters using all the material published by Dungeons & Dragons for fifth edition, while adding custom magic items or spells created using the homebrew system. That homebrew content can then be shared with the community for other players to use in their own games.

The team at Curse has an extensive roadmap for D&D Beyond, including implementing features such as a mobile app, encounter builders, and combat tracking. D&D Beyond is excited to continue to work closely with the team at Dungeons & Dragons to implement all new adventures and rules material into the toolset, such as Tomb of Annihilation and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything coming this fall.

With over 200K active members in the beta, D&D Beyond’s rabid community has already created more than 240 thousand(!) characters and are already bringing the new modern era of D&D to their tables.

Dungeons & Dragons Goes Beyond

At PAX East, Wizards of the Coast announce D&D Beyond an official digital toolset for use with the Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition rules. Partnering with Curse, the app goes beyond the pen and paper and provides rules, character building, digital character sheets, and more.

The app contains a D&D Compendium with official content, allows you to create, browse, and use homebrew content, manage characters, manage campaigns, news, articles, forums, and you’ll be able to access it anywhere on any device.

Its goal is to make management easier to play the popular roleplaying game. It’ll be available on any device and will empower by beginners and veterans.

BOOM!’s Curse to Come to the Big Screen

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, another comic from BOOM! Studios is heading to the big screen. Blumhouse has optioned the comic series Curse which was written by Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel, with art by Colin Lorimer and Riley Rossmo.

The werewolf story is about a widowed father who attempts to capture a killer to claim a reward and help his child who is suffering from a rare illness. There’s also werewolves involved.

The comic’s protagonist is African-American, one of the few comics from a major publisher to feature one as the main character.

This is one of a number of BOOM! comics being worked on for the big screen. Currently Irredeemable, Tag, and The Empty Man are all in the process.

Tomorrow is new comic day and as usual, there’s a lot you’ll find hitting your comic shop’s shelves. With so many comics coming out, what’s worth your hard-earned dollars? That’s where we come in. Here’s this week’s comics that are most likely to provide entertainment and that we’re looking forward to reading.

Top Pick: Undertow #1 (Image Comics) – Mixing sci-fi, politics, social commentary, this series puts a new spin on the Atlantis mythos. It’s fresh in both story as well as the look. A combination of both excelling. I full expect it to sell out, so head to your shops early if you want to get a copy.
Alex + Ada #4 (Image Comics) – The boy and his bot tale continues. It’s as cute as it is quirky.
Curse #2 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! brings back the horror in this interesting werewolf story that has a father on the hunt to collect on a reward and save his sick child.
Daredevil #36 (Marvel) – It’s Mark Waid’s Daredevil! That is the only reason you need to pick it up. It’s good, really good.
Loki: Ragnarok & Roll #1 (BOOM! Studios) – I wasn’t sure what to expect, but having read the first issue, this comedic take on Odin, Thor and Loki is well worth your time and money.
The Midas Flesh #3 (BOOM! Studios) – It’s a sci-fi tale with an all-ages spin. This is easily one of my favorite comics so far this year. Every issue has been fun and entertaining, plus the art is just plain awesome.
New Warriors #1 (Marvel) – Marvel’s team of kid heroes is back with an interesting line-up. There’s so much history here, that alone makes it a buy. Seeing the team form in Nova has given us a hint as to what to expect, and that’s fun superhero goodness.
The Punisher #2 (Marvel) – The first issue blew me away (get it?). Marvel’s gun-toting vigilante is back and better than ever. In the hands if this current creative team, I have nothing but high expectations.
Unity#4 (Valiant) – Valiant has brought together some of its biggest players and then shook everything up. This is a publisher where you should just be checking out everything they’re doing.
The White Suits #1 (Dark Horse) – Frank Barbiere’s crime/spy series that is as cool in its look as it is for the story. A mysterious team that rocks white suits terrorizes the underworld. The comic left me wanting more and can’t wait to see where this goes. Perfect for fans of crime stories.

Review: Curse #1

BOOM! Studios has a long history of publishing some of the industry’s best modern horror, their new series Curse takes them back to their roots with a werewolf story unlike any you’ve ever seen. A horror thriller, the comic has the talented creative team of writers Michael Moreci and Tim Daniel and artists Colin Lorimer and Riley Rossmo. That combination of talent gives us a smart, haunting, and realistic first issue. Or at least as realistic as a story can be about werewolves.

Laney Griffin is a man who will do anything to save his son from leukemia, but the cost of treatment has broken him financially. When he pursues an elusive murderer in the wilderness of his small, rural community, in the hopes of securing a substantial bounty, Laney is confronted with something he never could have expected: a werewolf. The captive lycan, in human form, turns Laney’s life upside-down, forcing him to confront his haunted past and race against the clock—because the wolf will return, and Laney’s son’s condition continues to worsen. Curse is a story of a family’s survival at all costs.

And that centering on family is what makes this first issue stand out. Horror is best when the group involved is tight, so that there’s emotional stake when a member is either killed or imperiled. That’s what Moreci and Daniel sets up, real stakes. Laney’s a man desperate to do right for his son. With the very looming, and real, threat of losing him not just to disease, but to family who think they can do a better job of caring for him. The interesting implications, and statement, of that particular scene aside, this creates tension, and a mission he can’t fail. This creates a down to Earth horror series that’s easily relateable.

On top of Moreci and Daniel’s writing is Lorimer and Rossmo’s art. Rossmo’s style is made for horror, and the two together give us a dark and gritty artistic look that fits the setting and genre.

We’re early into 2014 and hopefully Curse is a sign of what we can expect from comics this year. It’s a great debut and a series everyone should check out.
