Secret Origin The Story of DC ComicsOn November 9th, Warner Bros. Pictures releases Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics, a documentary written and directed by Mac Carter and narrated by Ryan Reynolds.  The documentary explores the 75 years of DC comics history.

The documentary opens up the vaults and features excerpts from, films and television programs based on DC characters as well as interviews with comic book creators Neal Adams, Karen Berger, Mike Carlin, Dan Didio, Neil Gaiman, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, Paul Levitz, Dwayne McDuffie, Grant Morrison, Dennis O’Neil, Paul Pope, Louise Simonson, Mark Waid, Len Wein and Marv Wolfman.

It’ll be interesting if this will be a full view of the companies history, warts and all.  There’s some great books out there that covers the early years of the comic book industry and many speculate that Harry Donenfeld, one of the key figures in DC’s history was involved in bootlegging liquor.  There’s also been numerous copyright fights over the years and ongoing legal battles with many of their iconic character’s creators.

The DVD  will be distributed by Warner Home Video and have a SRP of $24.98 and will also be available On Demand and for Download.

Gen Con 2010 – Cool Mini or Not

One of the cool finds at this year’s Gen Con was the company Cool Mini or Not.  They’ve got some great figures but what really stood out was their premium miniature line called Knight Models.  The figures so far fall into two categories, Star Wars and Marvel.  They are beautiful to look at but run a decent price of $64.99 to $119.99 for the Marvel ones.

There’s video below of the packaging and you can always head over to their site to see the full line.

Review – Witchblade #137

Witchblade #137 COVA stampedTop Cow has been hyping this latest issue of Witchblade due to the return of Necromancer (a character I’ve never heard of).  Most of the issue is from her perspective and is self-contained.  The issue has a purpose, to get this character into continuity, and it achieves that.

“Raise the Dead”, Guest-starring The Necromancer!
Sara Pezzini can gain an important ally in Abby van Alstine, the Necromancer, but only if Sara can keep her alive! Abby’s visit to New York City is interrupted by a demonic attack, and her only chance for survival is entering the world of the Witchblade.

Most of the issue is from Abby’s perspective and does what it can to introduce us to the character and get her right into the thick of things.  As a whole I’m intrigued by the character and where she may go, and the issue is entertaining.

It has the usual fights and action, and it’s nice to see something not centered around Pezzini.  There’s a goal here and the issue achieves that.  It introduces us to a character and fleshes out her background, gives us some openness for future story lines.

In the end, it’s an entertaining issue, that achieves what it needs to in a self-contained issue.

Review – Fogtown

FogtownNoir is the new “it” genre for a while now (zombies are out, vampires are really out) and DC and Vertigo have been capitalizing with their Vertigo Crime line of books.  The vast majority are quality reads and the latest, Fogtown is no exception.

Written by Andersen Gabrych with art by Brad Rader, the crime graphic novel follows the usual gritty detective trying to find a missing girl and ledger in San Francisco.

It’s 1953 and Frank Grissel is a man from the old school – a touch-talking, hard-drinking womanizing private dick who’s seen it all and done it all… twice.

So when young hookers start turning up dead on the streets of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district, Frank barely raises an eyebrow.  But after an apparently simple missing persons case goes dizzyingly comple, Frank sees that all the vice in this town is connected – and that he is now caught in a twisted web of sex, money, drugs and murder.

And that’s not all… because, like the city itself, Frank Grissel is not all that appears.  Dig beneath the surface and there’s a complex and tortured soul who now realizes that exposing the truth of this case may well reveal the truth about himself…

The story is somewhat predictable if you pay attention to the hints, but that doesn’t lessen the enjoyment of the graphic novel.  Gabrych definitely goes the distance with very adult themes and situations.

There’s quite a few taboos that are pushed and intertwined in the story and everything is impressive.  I applaud Gabrych’s writing and willingness to put out a story of this nature and with some of the situations presented.  I also applaud DC for printing it.

If you enjoy noir, and it’s sometimes over the top plots, then this is the read for you.

Your First Look At Thor: The Mighty Avenger #4!

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Thor: The Mighty Avenger #4, from the red hot creative team of Roger Langridge and Chris Samnee! Thor and the Warriors Three are en route to Asgard when they take a wrong turn and wind up in Oxford. Captain Britain doesn’t take too kindly to the Norse Interlopers and before anyone knows it, Thor and Captain Britain find themselves in an international showdown for the history books! Thor: The Mighty Avenger #4 has it all: Norse Gods, British warriors, and slugfests galore!

Fans and critics agree, Thor: The Mighty Avenger is a smash-hit!

“…a terrific pairing of writer and cartoonist on a light, whimsical, and accessible new Thor comic…It’s only just begun, but it looks to revel in everything weird and wonderful about the character, and by extension, the Marvel universe.” – Paul Montgomery, iFanboy.com on Thor: The Mighty Avenger #1

“So far Thor, The Mighty Avenger earns three bullets. What gives the book its fourth? The character interaction, the development, the verisimilitude in the dialogue which imbues these literally two-dimensional art figures with emotion and depth.” – Ray Tate, ComicsBulletin.com on Thor: The Mighty Avenger #2

“Langridge’s story is filled with enough bits of Thor’s Marvel-based mythology to make this title an instant hit for experienced Thor fans, but Langridge keeps it loose enough to make this book instantly approachable to Thor rookies.” – Doug Zawisza, ComicBookResources.com on Thor: The Mighty Avenger #2

Don’t miss out on this must-read series when Thor: The Mighty Avenger #4 hits shelves this September!

Jessie Garza with Viper states, “We’re ecstatic to have been granted the opportunity to give both of these characters the comic treatment. These are two awesome properties to add to our line-up of recently acquired license (Odd Rods).”

Inspector Gadget
JT1
Inspector Gadget is an animated television series developed about a clumsy, simple-witted detective named Inspector Gadget, who is a human being with various bionic gadgets built into his body. Gadget’s arch-nemesis is Dr. Claw, the leader of an evil organization, known as “M.A.D.”

Often cluelessly stumbling through any case he is given, Gadget frequently ignorantly makes foolish and insufferably clumsy mistakes pertaining to surroundings and current environment, mistaking innocent bystanders (and sometimes Brain, his niece Penny’s dog) for enemies, and believing that the real enemies are friends. His ineptitude always leads him into danger, but he always gets out of trouble through either his trusty gadgets, Penny’s unseen assistance, or pure luck.

Johnny Test
JT1

Johnny Test concerns the adventures of Johnny Test, an average 11-year-old boy who lives in Porkbelly. Johnny is the troublesome, narcissistic, spoiled, hated and widely disrespected member of the Test family, which consists of his super-genius 13-year-old twin sisters, Susan and Mary, his talking (and talkative) companion dog, Dukey, and his over-the-top parents, his mother Lila, who is a full-blown workaholic businesswoman, and his father Hugh, who is a obsessive-compulsive househusband who likes total hygiene and meatloaf. The Test twins use their younger brother as a guinea pig for their various experiments (thus their surname of Test) in their secret laboratory, with which they try to impress Gil Nexdor, their pretty boy next-door neighbor.
