Movie Review: Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders

The four Super-Villains have combined their wicked talents to hatch a plot so nefarious that the Dynamic Duo will need to go to outer space (and back) to foil their arch enemies and restore order in Gotham City. It’s a truly fantastic adventure that will pit good against evil, good against good, evil against evil … and feature two words that exponentially raise the stakes for both sides: Replicator Ray. Holy Multiplication Tables!

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders is the newest animated film based on DC Comic characters, but this one has a twist,, we’re back in the world of Batman ’66. Yes, the classic television show has a movie! It’s not just the characters that are returning, it’s some of the actors too. Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman) are all involved providing their voices to the roles they helped defined and are celebrated all these years later.

The animated film captures the vibe created by the live action series with the “biff” “pow” and more in a psychedelic story that you just need to go with. It’s campy. It’s really campy, which is exactly what you’d expect in a Batman story. And that’s a lot of the fun of the movie as it really nails everything the classic series is loved and/or hated for. The movie is as much as an homage to the old series as it is a send-up of it as well. Scenes are taken over the top with winks and nods all throughout.

The story is out there involving duplicator rays and Batman turning evil, but that seriously doesn’t matter. If you don’t laugh at the concept of a “Batman AntiAntidote” you won’t appreciate the film at all.

It’s fantastic to hear the voices of West, Ward, and Newmar in their classic roles. There’s a weird disconnect for some as the voices sound a bit aged, but the characters obviously haven’t. Still, their readings are beyond fantastic. And those who are bringing other older characters to life are solid as well. The Joker, Penguin, Riddler, all reminded me of the classic television characters and blended seamlessly.

The movie as a whole is a solid blend of old and new and you’ll likely get excited as soon as the classic television theme starts playing. The power of animation has captured what made the show special and also allowed it to do things it’d never be able to due to the restrictions of live action. From Gotham to space and back, the movie is goofy fun that’ll put a smile on your face when it finally wraps up.

Stern Pinball & Ka-Pow Pinball Celebrates 50 Years of Batman ’66

Stern Pinball, Inc. has announced the availability of its highly anticipated Batman ‘66 Anniversary Edition pinball machine.

Stern Pinball is celebrating its 30th year in business and the 50th anniversary of the iconic American TV series with an Anniversary Edition pinball machine featuring the world famous “Dynamic Duo” of Batman and Robin. The game will immerse players in campy fun and heart-pounding action as the crime fighting Dynamic Duo comes to the aid of the Gotham City Police. Throughout the game, Batman and Robin work to deduce clues and discover super villain plots in an effort to thwart evil plans and capture bad guys.  Players are guided through the game by the voices of none other than the original Batman and Robin, Adam West and Burt Ward.

A Hall of Fame pinball development team created the all new Anniversary Edition machine. The project was inspired by Joe Kaminkow of Ka-Pow Pinball and spearheaded by Stern Pinball product development chief, George Gomez, who, along with renowned programmer, Lyman Sheats, brought the game to life.

In addition to the fun title and game experience, the machine features a full-color high definition display replacing the dot matrix display. In conjunction with Stern’s new SPIKE-2 electronic pinball platform, the display enables high definition graphics and innovative animations. This enables the game to feature actual TV footage from the iconic series. The game includes a second high definition display on the playfield as part of an interactive game feature.

The Batman ‘66 Anniversary Edition pinball machine will be available in Premium, Limited Edition, and Super Limited Edition models.  The company has no current plans to produce a Pro model.

In celebration of Stern Pinball’s 30th anniversary and Batman’s 50th anniversary, Stern Pinball will build a Super Limited Edition model. The Super Limited Edition model also includes a one-of-kind art package plus multiple translites, a unique included topper and accessories package, and a high-fidelity 3-channel audio system that is three times more powerful than audio systems of previous generations.  The Super Limited Edition model will be allocated by invitation and through an application process open to pinball collectors. Collectors can apply for a Super Limited Edition model by completing and submitting an application.

The Limited Edition model will be offered in two series of 120 games each. Each game in the first series will be named for one of the 120 episodes of the television show. Each game in the second series will be named for one of the iconic “bat gadgets” used in the series. In total, only 240 Limited Edition machines will be produced.

All purchasers who make a deposit on their game will also receive a VIP invitation to an exclusive “meet and greet” with Batman (Adam West) at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, Illinois during the weekend of Chicago’s Pinball Expo.

The Batman 1966 TV Series Burt Ward as Robin 1/4 Scale Action Figure

The long-awaited companion piece to last year’s #1 selling Adam West Batman figure from the 1966 Batman TV series has arrived! NECA has revealed a brand new 1/4 scale rendition of Burt Ward as Robin.

For close to 50 years the Batman TV show has delighted audiences, and this fall for the first time ever the complete series will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray! To celebrate this monumental event we have created this 17″ tall poseable figure of the Boy Wonder featuring Burt Ward’s likeness.

Mezco to Create Figures Based on the Batman Classic TV Series

mezco logoMezco Toys has announced a partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, to produce toys and vehicles based on the classic 1960’s Batman Classic TV Series.

The Mez-Itz line will feature the likeness of the actors from the series such as Adam West and Burt Ward, famed for their iconic portrayals as the dynamic duo, Batman and Robin.

Mezco’s Mez-Itz line will also debut the Batman Classic TV Series toys, including the Batmobile. While the Batmobile had appeared throughout the Batman comic books, the iteration designed by George Barris for the classic TV series was radically different and quickly became a fan favorite. Batman and Robin both fit in the Mez-Itz Batmobile, as do most other Mez-Itz figures.

Mezco will be producing Mez-Itz not only of Batman and Robin, but also of the Rogues Gallery as well: The Penguin, The Joker, Catwoman and The Riddler. Every Super-Villain needs henchman, so naturally Mezco will also produce The Riddler’s Thug, inspired by the one seen on the original show.

Mezco’s first wave of Batman Classic TV Series products will hit stores in July 2013.

Thursday, July 21 “The Making of ‘Transformers Prime’” (3:30 p.m., Room 24ABC)

Executive Producer Roberto Orci, whose credits include the films Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek, and the TV series “Fringe,” and “Hawaii Five-O,” will join Executive Producer Jeff Kline and the show’s Dave Hartman, Duane Capizzi, Jose Lopez, Therese Trujillo, Vinton Heuck and Mike Vogel (Hasbro Studios) to discuss the creative process behind the show nominated for six Daytime Emmy Awards (including two EmmyAward wins). Featuring a first-season highlights clip and a sneak peek at exciting footage from an upcoming episode, the panel will discuss all aspects of the show, including character and set development, design, and the Emmy-nominated writing of this epic series that have made this show a fan-favorite.  Following the discussion, fans will engage in a Q&A with the panelists.

Produced by Hasbro Studios, “Transformers Prime” (Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET on The Hub) continues the legendary battle between arch rivals Optimus Prime and Megatron who once again face-off in their epic rivalry for control of the Earth. Holy Comic-Con panel, Batman! The three stars of the iconic 1960s TV series “Batman” are coming to the San Diego Comic-Con for the very first time. Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin) and Julie Newmar (Catwoman) reunite to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the landmark television series presented on The Hub TV network Mondays-Thursdays at 11:30 p.m. ET.  The cast will share memories from the show that made camp cool, as well as introduce and discuss their favorite scenes followed by an audience Q & A.

When it premiered on ABC television in January 1966, Batman became something of a phenomenon. Rarely had a television series vaulted to the top of the ratings as quickly, or established an audience so broadly based and intensely loyal. Today the adventures of the Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder are more popular than ever allowing new generations to discover the classic series.

Friday, July 22 “The Aquabats Super Show!” (8:30 p.m., Room 5AB)

The Aquabats continue their never-ending quest to right wrongs, destroy boredom and seek justice for all as they invade their first-ever Comic-Con panel! The convention center floor will also feature several famous TV and movie vehicles for fans to pose with, including the DeLorean Time Machine (BACK TO THE FUTURE), General Lee (“Dukes of Hazzard”), The Mystery Machine (SCOOBY DOO), Hazzard County Patrol Car (“Dukes of Hazzard”) and Starsky and Hutch Torino.

Children and adult attendees are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite villain, superhero or pop culture personality for the chance to win special prizes in costume contests.  Event-goers may also try their hand interactive product exhibits and shop for collectible comics, movie and television memorabilia, toys and games at more than 200 dealer booths.

Special events at Philadelphia Comic Con include the “Magic: The Gathering” card game tournament, professional photo opportunities (Photo Ops) and others.

Philadelphia Comic Con is the sixth stop on Wizard World’s 2011 North American tour, which to date has 13 events scheduled.  Hours are Friday, June 17, noon – 8 p.m., Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 19, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Tickets are available in advance online at http://www.wizardworld.com/philadelphia.html at a savings over tickets purchased at the door.  Advance adult single-day tickets are priced at $25 ($35 on site); three-day weekend tickets are $45 ($55 on site), and tickets are free for children age 10 and under when accompanied by a paid adult (limit two children per adult).  VIP packages with special entry and exclusive items are also available on a limited basis.
