Deadlands Goes Prose Courtesy of Tor Books

Pinnacle Entertainment Group and Visionary Comics have reached agreement with Tor Books for the publication of all-new, original prose novels set in the world of the popular roleplaying game Deadlands. The deal calls for three novels, with an initial lineup of authors that includes New York Times bestselling, award-winning Jonathan Maberry and Jeff Mariotte.

C. Edward Sellner, chief creative officer for Visionary, said in a statement:

We’re very excited to be bringing Deadlands to such a publishing powerhouse. It’s our first move into non-comics media, and the people at Tor have been fantastic to work with. I have no doubt the fans will enjoy the results.

The novel line is an exciting step in the expansion of the Deadlands world. Visionary Comics has already successfully launched the property as comics.

Shane Hensley, the creator of Deadlands and president of Pinnacle Entertainment Group, said in the same statement:

It’s been such a joy watching Visionary play in our sandbox. We truly consider them partners in growing and expanding the Deadlands universe. Now Jonathan Maberry and Jeff Mariotte get to really dig deep and explore the world in the kind of depth you only get with full-length novels, and we’re as excited as anyone else to see what they do.

Jonathan Maberry added:

I’m really excited about writing Deadlands: Ghostwalkers, a balls-to-the-walls alt-history steampunk supernatural shoot-‘em-up action western. With zombies. I think I was genetically designed to write this kind of book.

Book Review: God is Disappointed in You

god_is_disappointed_in_you_cover_lgGod Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible…if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each.

Many, many times in the past I tried my best to crack open a Bible or make my way through a Torah to see what each say for myself, without being filtered through someone else or parts being left out. Written by Mark Russell, this condensed version is still filtered through someone else, but done so in a way that gets to the heart and point of the many passages that have shaped the world so much.

The result is a hilarious book that’s often shocking, some times blasphemous, but always funny with a huge heart. This is Sunday School for the information age. It cuts out the often rambling paragraphs and gets to the point of the deep meaning behind it all with the addition of including some of the historical context that might be selectively left out of church sermons.

Russell is backed up with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler who adds to the witty commentary with his simple, yet brilliant, cartoons that make you pause and think, much like Russell’s prose. The two together are a pair that doesn’t necessarily challenge religion, but instead challenges the reader to come up with their own thoughts and interpretation.

I found myself laughing out loud, to the point that those around me thought I had lost my mind. My further explanation of what I was reading was often met with a horrified look as if the mere existence of this book was an affront to organized religion.

And that’s what’s amazing about it all. This book will offend some, but it celebrates the works it interprets and does so with more sincerity and honest than many of the religious officials who have dedicated their life to it all. The Top Shelf description really sums it up really well, “this book is a must-read for anyone who wants to see past the fog of religious agendas and cultural debates to discover what the Bible really says.”

Kickstarter Spotlight: Fandom, Gender, Free Comics and Sharks!

Welcome to the first edition of a new regular Thursday feature where we spotlight cool projects you can find on Kickstarter!

Keep in mind we do not guarantee the completion of any of these projects and are not responsible for the end result. We do include a warning of what we think the likelihood of issues are and how risky the project is.

Don’t Feed the Trolls

dont_feed_the_trollsWhen you think of “fandom” it’s not always in the flattering of lights. Society paints fans, especially those of comics, science fiction, etc., in a negative way, depicting them as geeks and nerds. This film will delve deeper into these communities to show there’s more to them.

The film will focus on Nicole, both a fitness professional and a die-hard fan. Her two very different worlds will blend together to show that there is more to belonging to a fandom than the “fanatic” stereotype society has given us.

The two folks behind it, Nicole and Liz, both went to film school and between the two of them they’ve worked on dozens and dozens of films and projects. They know that in the film world, anything that can go wrong will go wrong and they’re more than ready to tackle anything that comes their way.

I like the idea of shedding a positive light on fandom, and doing so with a focus on a female fan not only takes on the stereotype of fans, but also women’s roles within it. The project has a modest goal of $3,000.

Best Pledge: $25 – You get updates of the film, but also a DVD of the film and a link to an early version of it. The price is about right for what I’d pay for a DVD movie. There are some cooler levels at higher amounts.

Risk: MEDIUM – This is the first Kickstarter project for the two. While I think they know production, things might happen, so if anything I’d expect a delay from the delivery date of this September.

Comics Undressed

ladydrawerOur friends over at Ladydrawers are putting together a different documentary. This one is an ambitious project with the primary aim of addressing media justice in comics and popular culture. They intend to portray the underlying forms of discrimination that impact representations of women, queers, trans folk, non-binary gender people, and people of color in comics. They seek to support a diversity of racial, gender, and sexual identities that make up our society as well as unveil the surprising economic injustices and cultural biases that occur. Their goal is to present a sincere heartfelt documentary that captures their love for comics while critiquing the structure of the comics industry. They intend to implement an experimental process to give form to their extensive original research that mirrors the comics themselves. Through a myriad of interviews with comics creators, readers, bloggers, vendors, fans, and the general public, they strive to foster a multiplicity of viewpoints in the comic-book world and our culture at large.

It’s great to get a critical look at our comic culture, and Ladydrawers does just that with thought and research. This isn’t a knee-jerk reactionary group, these are folks who think things through and make their arguments with facts and research. It should be very interesting to see what they come up with and the end of the result of the project.

Critical analysis of the representation of individuals in comics is good. Different viewpoints are good. Research is good. Discussion of these issues is good. So of course this is a project I can get behind.

Best Pledge: $35 – This gets you a digital copy of the movie and some other items. It’s the one I chose when I pledged. So yes, my money is in on this one.

Risk: LOW – This is the first Kickstarter project for the group, but they’ve put out other items in the past. While I have no idea if the December date is realistic, I feel confident the project will be completed within a reasonable amount of time.

Rocksalt “Back to School” edition

rocksaltRocksalt Magazine is a free comics anthology out of Austin.  They print three thousand copies of each issue and distribute it at about two hundred locations around town.  They’ve been doing it for two years now, and it has been successful beyond their wildest dreams.  The next issue, #9, will be the back-to-school special and it will be their “best issue yet.”

It’s that simple, a great way to get comics into the hands with folks and with only hours left, a guaranteed one to get funded.

Best Pledge: $25 – This gets you a copy of all nine issues mailed directly to you. It’s a great way to check out some indie comic creators from the Austin area which has a great track record for churning them out.

Risk: LOW – This is the first Kickstarter project for Geoff, but he’s released items before. The time frame might be tight, so I’d expect it to slip by a month or two.

FRENZY – An Illustrated Novel

frenzySharks…. is there any other reason you need to give to this?

Frenzy is an original illustrated horror/thriller novel about one of the world’s most beloved animals… sharks! It is an original novel authored by Andrew E.C.Gaska, and will be produced by guerrilla design studio BLAM! Ventures, LLC. Frenzy is a special project because while it is a prose novel (not a graphic novel), the book will have over 20 paintings and another 20 pen & ink illustrations from a diverse array of talented artists to help tell the story. These talents include AMAZING artists such as menton3, Bob Eggleton, Dave Dorman, Erik Gist, Steve White, Aaron Miller, Dan Dussault, Chandra Free, and more to be announced!

Not only do you get a cool story, but that’s a hell of a roster of talent when it comes to the art. You can see some examples of their skills and talent on the Kickstarter page. I’ve also read a lot of Gaska’s previous work, and the man is a talented writer. Plus there are sharks, that alone is enough reason to pledge to this one.

In full disclosure, I’m marrying one of the science advisers. I would have given to this no matter what though.

Best Pledge: $25 – This gets you a digital copy of the book, but I’d go higher than that, there’s some very cool higher pledges. I myself am going with the $70 pledge to get a sketch from Chandra Free.

Risk: LOW – Drew is a long time vet when it comes to producing items and releasing them and he’s given himself a long lead time for this. I fully expect this one on time and as promised. (No pressure)

Book Review: Father Gaetano’s Puppet Catechism (Mignola and Golden Novella)

9781250039040_p0_v1_s260x420Comics and the prose book go way back. Marvel was starting its golden age and books like the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four were quickly becoming childhood favorites, and they took advantage of this to write what’s now called in the business a “prose novel” (though anyone should know that that’s rather redundant; no, “prose book” isn’t redundant because a book can be non-prose, like a TPB or graphic novel). Marvel’s first prose novel was 1967’s The Avengers Battle the Earth-Wrecker by Otto Binder, and it was an attempt among other things to show that comic book characters could transcend their images, that they could be literary legends as well. I don’t doubt that it was also a smart marketing ploy to allow parents the satisfaction of knowing their kids were reading books, not comics, while still allowing kids (or adults!) to follow their favorite characters’ sagas. DC did this as well, albeit since some of their characters were older, they were able to build the wagon that then carried the proverbial band, with 1942’s The Adventures of Superman by George Lowther. You can check out more titles on WikipediaThis paragraph is my way of justifying writing a review of a book on a largely comics-based website, so just go with it…

Despite Marvel and DC having founded, pioneered, and created monuments in the comic book prose novel category (though I’m not sure how good the writings of these are), it’s Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden who take home the prize, since they’ve penned two novels to-date and a novella that are spawned from the Gothic atmosphere of the Mignolaverse, aided by Golden’s experience as a novelist, and accompanied with eerie drawing from the mind of Mignola. Now it’s no secret that I’m a Dark Horse fan, since the majority of my reviews are for their stuff, and it should likewise be no secret that I’m a Mignolverse acolyte (hell, I’m planning on writing my Master’s Thesis on the role of the occult and Gothic fascination of American society as it is experienced in modern comics, with special attention Mignola’s books). So when I discovered Father Gaetano’s Puppet Catechism: A Novella, with a promising synopsis on Amazon, I just had to see how he adopted his comic genius to the big page, as it were. What I found in the short novella was entirely worthwhile.

(SPOILERS) The story begins in Sicily during WWII, after Sicily has just witnessed a major battle and the Allies have thrown off the German occupation of the island, making it once again a somewhat insignificant island in the grand scheme of the war. The setting is a rectory in the village of Tringale that’s been turned into an orphanage for those children who lost their parents in the bombing. Already, this is a rather depressed setting rife with emotional possibilities–a key facet of Mignola’s writing. And has anyone else realized that many of his stories are set in wartime? It’s a perfect neo-Gothic setting. A new priest has arrived to take control of the orphanage and local ministry, Father Gaetano. Other protagonists include Sebastiano, a lonely 9-year-old orphan; Sister Teresa, a beautiful but commanding abbess; and Pagliacco, a clown puppet.

Perhaps you can see where this is going given the name of the novella and the cast above? But you’d be only somewhat right. Faith and the ‘parts’ we play in life are the major themes of this book, and Father Gaetano struggles to teach the orphans about free will and the good of God. After all, these kids have lost everything, they’ve seen the worst of human kind, and they’re naturally disenchanted with the religious fold. I know a death in my life caused me to start thinking God wasn’t real; then an anthropology degree led me to the idea that religion is a cultural creation, nothing more (my opinion, the the opinion of this website or anyone else associated herewith). In an effort to capture the children’s imagination and awe them with the word of God, Gaetano uses a puppet theatre left behind by a former caretaker and puppet-master. It is slowly revealed that the puppets might actually be alive; Sebastiano is a key player in all of this, and the development of this plot point is haunting and foreboding.

It becomes obvious to the children, who are visited at night by the puppets, that whatever characters Father Gaetano makes the puppets play during the teaching of the Bible, is the role the puppets take on in their late-hour after-dark lives. The David and Goliath puppets try to kill one another, and the Noah puppet causes a disturbance trying to get the children to help him build an ark. It’s not until Father Gaetano decides to teach the children about good and evil, the double-edged sword of ‘free will,’ and the Fall, that the eerie animation of the puppets takes a turn for the dark. A Lucifer puppet! His creation changes the game, forces realizations that childhood play and the opinions of children are not something to cast off as young, imaginative nonsense. The ending is dark, ominous, and suggestive of the sort of sinister, calculating evil feared by the Church for so long–another of Mignola’s literary watermarks.

Several small, black-and-white Mignola illustrations are included in the book, probably no more than a dozen, and they create a relationship with the text that is not always exactly representative of the actions in the narrative, but more often captures, expresses, and intensifies the tone of Mignola and Golden’s narrative. My only complaint is a petty desire for more, more, more of Mignola’s illustrations!

Hopefully this has your interest, and maybe you’ll have the time to break away from your growing stack of comics to check out Mignola and Golden’s Father Gaetano’s Puppter Catechism, a chilling and instructive novella about the evil we create in our own lives, and that humans are ultimately responsible for their creations, not deities.

Book Review: Ex-Patriots

ex_patriots_cover-FINALWe’ve got the latest review from our guest contributor Kalyn! This time, the prose book Ex-Patriots.

This was a review copy provided by the publishers so I haven’t read the first novel in this series, Ex-Heroes.  That might be a disadvantage because that first book appeared to be the introduction to all four of the main characters.  There were moments where I felt like I was missing an inside joke.  This isn’t a knock on the book, just a note that it’s probably not the best place to jump in.  And jump-in really does best describe the story here.

We fall into the story after the crazy part of the zombie apocalypse is over and when long-term survival has become the bigger concern.  The four superheroes have become the de-facto rulers of a safe zone, the Mount, in the middle of Los Angeles whose survivors have been struggling along for two years in the middle of 9 million zombies.  Then the thing everyone has been waiting for happens – the US Army shows up.

Turns out the Army had been working on a new breed of supersoldier shortly before all-zombie hell broke loose and Project Krypton (the supersoldier project) has been continuing to develop over the last two years.  There are all of the usual suspects present – the brilliant but crazy scientist, the mysterious government liaison, the patriotic and dedicated military leader, and lots of meatheads (of both genders) just there to prove something. So the Army shows up and offers to take over for the intrepid heroes, but they want to check things out first. This is where the story really takes off.

There are new foes to contend with, and an old one, for the team of superheroes.  The story isn’t complicated and the characters are more archetypal than layered but the action keeps things moving along at a quick pace.  This novel strikes me as probably lighter on the zombies than the first but there’s enough fighting to not miss it.  There are a few twists and turns in the story, not all of them were what I expected, so I found the novel pretty entertaining overall.

Note: as expected for any novel where there are military meatheads as characters, there is some blatant misogyny.  Most of it I had no trouble shrugging off but there were some times where it struck me as entirely unnecessary and other times it was completely over the top.  Most times, the characters who used the excessively degrading language didn’t really need to be distinguished as characters so I was confused as to why such horrible things were part of the dialogue.  Other uses just didn’t really add anything to the character so it bothered me that this was a common theme in the words of certain characters.  There were also a couple of instances where it went way further than made me comfortable, so for anyone who is sensitive to misogynistic language or might be triggered by references to non-consent this book might be one that’s better to miss.

A good summer, beach or by-the-pool, read.
