Celebrity-socialite Reno Selleti doesn’t believe in very much beyond Instagram comments, hipster drugs, and the flash of paparazzi cameras, so when a friend invites her to an EYES WIDE SHUT-type party she goes along mostly for the lulz. But the joke doesn’t feel as funny when she realizes it’s an actual occult ritual, and suddenly she’s seeing things… horrifying apparitions trying to warn her. “RUN.”

There’s Nothing There is a stylish & hallucinatory thriller about losing yourself in the bright lights and finding yourself at rock bottom by writer Patrick Kindlon, artist Maria Llovet, and published by Black Mask Studios.

Patrick joins Brett and Elana for a brand new episode of Graphic Policy Radio to discuss the series and more.

Patrick Kindlon is a comic writer whose credits include a decade of struggle in other artistic fields, some notoriety among people who get caught shoplifting from Whole Foods, and a few really great comics (due largely to collaborations that elevate his work). His breakthrough book was We Can Never Go Home with oft writing partner Matthew Rosenberg and artist Josh Hood. His most recent work, There’s Nothing There with artist Maria Llovet, ups the darkness in his earlier work to pitch black. He is admittedly out-of-touch.

Review: Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #2

501281-_sx360_ql80_ttd_

Colonel Conley is training new recruits when he receives a transmission from a long lost friend. The SPACE RIDERS have to get their sh** together and find the source of the signal. It leads them to the OMEGA STRUCTURE, the place where GODS GO TO DIE! Prepare yourselves as best you can for THE LAST TRANSMISSION OF MARGARITA PELIGRO!

Things get even stranger in Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #2 as two figures from the captain’s past return. A new threat begins to rise from the early days of the universe which sends the crew to the edge of the universe… literally. The captain is reintroduced to his mom, and her own past which sets up the next issue as this tale continues to unfold.

The art style continues it vibrant almost psychedelic look creating a lot of contrast. The show stealer goes to the Omega Structure with dark, with an almost Lovecraft like look.

Review: Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #1

STL036801

An ancient evil is gathering power throughout the cosmos, and it falls upon the legendary SPACE RIDERS to kick its a**! Having disbanded, the crew of CAPTAIN PELIGRO, MONO, and YARA must reunite for what may be their final ride! The cult comic that electrified comic readers in the brain RETURNS to blast your fragile human psyche into oblivion!!

Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #1 is a heroic beginning for the second volume of this series. Written by Fabian Rangel, Jr., this second volume manages to continue what made the first so impressive, a lot of action, and sparks of humor. This first issue hints at some strange events yet to come, and some troublesome past actions between Captain Peligro, and Mono.

The colorful, almost psychedelic art style by Alexis Ziritt continues on creating a comic that stands out from so much else on the shelf. It continues a high contrast environments, and characters. And when all is said and done, each panel is a small work of art in the process as well.

Black Mask Studios Announces the “Calexit: Comics Change The World Tour”

What if California refused to be ruled by a tyrannical President? Comic book readers will discover the answer to that question starting on July 12, 2017, when Black Mask Studios publishes the first issue of the eagerly anticipated comic book series Calexit a week before San Diego Comic Con 2017. The Los Angeles based indie publisher Black Mask is promoting the sure-to-be-controversial ongoing series by writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan with The “Calexit: Comics Change The World Tour” of comic stores to promote the new series, the publisher announced today.

Pizzolo and Nahuelpan will be joined by other Black Mask Studios creators at Calexit: Comics Change The World Tour events throughout the year:

In Calexit, the citizens of California will struggle to seize power back from an autocratic government. The ongoing series tells the story of Jamil, a 25-year old courier (aka smuggler), and Zora, a 27-year old leader in the Pacific Coast Sister Cities Resistance, who escape together from a prison camp in Occupied Los Angeles, where martial law has been in place for the past year —  ever since America’s demagogue President signed an executive order to deport all immigrants, and California responded by proclaiming itself a Sanctuary State. Each issue of Calexit will also include non-fiction material about local sustainability and grassroots campaigning for 2018 elections.

Review: Quantum Teens Are Go #4

A lot has happened in a very short amount of time for Sumesh and Nat at this point in Black Mask StudiosQuantum Teens Are Go. Underground super science clubs, conspiracies, mystery, intrigue, and of course high school and their own personal complications. But with this issue we eke out a few sorely needed answers as the first arc comes to a close.

Magdalene Visaggio’s writing, though I had my qualms about it before, comes together really nicely in this issue and gives the payoff and release that felt so sorely lacking in #3.

Again the art and colors of Eryk Donovan and Claudia Aguirre compliment the frenetic pacing of the writing well and reminds of zines with slight misprints and unavoidable ink splatters left behind. Now that we’ve got the full arc, I can definitely say this reminds me more of Pacific North Weird a la Life is Strange than Weird Science.

I do still question the decision to release this as monthly issues but the story overpowers my qualms. If you’re missed any of the issues up until now and can’t find them, a trade is slated for released on August 30th. All around, I do definitely still think this is one to pick up.

Reno puts ghosts on the back burner to walk the red carpet. But hauntings aren’t scheduled things, and she soon finds herself visited by another restless spirit. Meanwhile, more corporeal threats begin to form around her as a stalker and an angry sex cult jockey for position. It’s beginning to feel like nowhere is safe.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Joe

Top Pick: 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – This series is one that has taken awhile to finish, but so far it has been worth the wait. Hopefully #5 follows shortly after!

The Flash #22 (DC Comics) – It is so far so good for The Button, and I’m excited to see how this all pans out and sets up the big fall event by Johns.

Superman #23 (DC Comics) – One of my favorite Rebirth books just keeps getting better. This looks to be another Jon heavy issue, which is okay with me.

The Mighty Thor #19 (Marvel) – Aaron has been doing a fantastic job on Thor for years, and this run is no different. I have enjoyed the epic galactic war and more Quentin Quire is never a bad thing.

Batman #23 (DC Comics) – Now that The Button is ending in this weeks The Flash, this book gets back to the aftermath of Bane. I’m looking forward to how everything plays out.

Brett

Top Pick: Star Trek: The Next Generations: Mirror Broken #1 (IDW Publishing) – The Free Comic Book Day release put this on my radar as I’m not much of a Star Trek fan (I watch the shows once in a while, but wasn’t a regular thing for me). That issue sucked me in with a Mirror world that I want to find out more about and see where this series goes.

4 Kids Walk Into A Bank #4 (Black Mask Studios) – It feels like forever since the last issue, but as soon as I start reading it it’s like getting together with an old friend. Funny and surprisingly tense this issue.

Eleanor & Egret #2 (Aftershock Comics) – The first issue was cute and quirky with a fun story and amazing art. I can’t wait for this second one.

Ian Livingstones’ Freeway Fighter #1 (Titan Comics) – The classic game comes to comics and the first issue is fantastic. If you’re a fan of Mad Max or that type of world, this is one that’s a must get.

Josephine Baker (Self Made Hero) – A graphic novel about this trailblazing woman who lived a life that’s so amazing it can’t be true… but it is, so read up and find out more.

Paul

Top Pick: Generation X #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! I have been waiting for this title since it’s reveal. I loved the original run of Generation X back in the day, and I know this is a new batch of students taking up the name, but Jubilee is now in charge…how can this not be good? The line up is interesting, and anything with Quentin Quire is definitely worth checking out. This should be a fun read.

Super Sons #4 (DC Comics) – This book is fun and action packed and I love this new dynamic duo of Superboy and Robin. You definitely should be reading this title.

U.S.Avengers #6 (Marvel) – Steve Rogers is looking to take down Roberto and his team. Like they’re going to let that happen. This book has been hit or miss with me, but I am curious to see how they deal with Rogers and Hydra taking over.

X-Men Gold #4 (Marvel) – Gambit turns up, so you know things are going to be exciting. I’d like to see him re-join a team of X-Men, so why not this one?
