S.H.I.E.L.D. Jokes about Clinton’s Email Servers

Comics are often thought of as pretty liberal, but that doesn’t mean writers aren’t willing to take shots at or make jokes concerning Democrats. In Marvel‘s Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Alpha #1 which is out today, writer Nick Spencer takes a jab at the controversy over Hillary Clinton‘s email servers.

While being questioned over their actions, a low lever S.H.I.E.L.D. agent makes a crack about wiping servers.

For those unaware of the issue NPR has you covered.

Review: Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Alpha #1

Avengers_Standoff_Assault_on_Pleasant_Hill_Alpha_CoverFrom the outside, Pleasant Hill looks like the perfect small town community. But this gated community has more than its fair share of secrets. Secrets so explosive it will draw estranged allies Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson back together to save a friend in danger and put things right. But when the combined might of two Captain America’s isn’t enough, who do you call? In the face of unspeakable evil, Avengers teams from across the Marvel Universe will assemble like never before! But what’s hidden in Pleasant Hill might even be too much for them to handle…

Avengers Standoff is the next event for Marvel Comics weaving its way through a bunch of titles over the next few months. Avengers Standoff: Assault on Pleasant Hill Alpha #1 is not the first prequel, it’s actually the second and officially kicks off the storyline. Just a few weeks ago we were introduced to Pleasant Hill in Avengers Standoff: Welcome to Pleasant Hill.

While not a bad comic, I really wonder what the point of this oversized issue. While it moves the storyline a bit more along than the previous Alpha, I wonder more why the two comics weren’t combined in to one issue by adding a few pages. A more streamlined experience would have existed and both are needed to understand each other. It’s the fact these comics have been splint in two that bothers me a bit, instead of being merged into one seamless narrative.

The comic as a whole is ok, setting up what’s to come, and touching upon the questionable nature of Maria Hill and S.H.I.E.L.D.’s actions. If anything, Steve Rogers’ reaction is a bit more subdued than I’d expect and Hill touches upon a comedic villain performance. Her attitude over her actions seems a bit odd based on the nature of the character, she’s never been a flippant character.

The art is just ok. The character designs are decent, there’s a some slight inconsistency, but it gets the job done, especially with the unenviable (maybe enviable for some?) task of so many different types of characters and design.

As a set up for what’s to come, this comic isn’t bad, it’s also not great either. It gets the job done, but doesn’t exactly excite me for what’s to come.
