XAVIER VERSUS PROTEUS!
In the penultimate issue of this high-stakes X-Men story, PROTEUS and CHARLES XAVIER face off in a psychic battle for the ages with nothing less than the fate of all free-thinking people at stake. With PSYLOCKE, GAMBIT, ROGUE, OLD MAN LOGAN and BISHOP by his side, will this team of heavy hitters be able to take Proteus down once and for all?
A change is coming to the Astonishing X-Men in the form of a new line-up – and an all-new creative team! Marvel exclusive writer Matthew Rosenberg and superstar artist Greg Land will take over the series starting with issue #13! And they’re taking Beast, Dazzler, Colossus, Havok, and Warpath on a new and exciting adventure in a brand-new X-Men story!
Rosenberg teased that this is a slightly different approach to this X-Men team and the reasons they’re together and their role is one that the X-Men haven’t played in a while.
Astonishing X-Men #13 arrives in comic shops this July 4th!

A MAN CALLED X Part 4
Evil doesn’t always know it’s evil. Proteus has a wonderful gift for the world – all he needs is a little time for the finishing touches. The X-Men race north to stop him, and choose their field commander for the battle to come. It’s the mutants unleashed at last, fighting Proteus’ army for the fate of the planet. Evil doesn’t always know it’s evil.
The third part of “Nuke-Clear War,” sees a reality storm battering London and its inhabitants and Psylocke and the man called X fused together. Proteus is warping reality and the X-Men have to figure out why and how to stop it.
The last issue of Astonishing X-Men left off with Psylocke and X fused together due to the warping of Proteus so first task, fix that. Writer Charles Soule gives us an interesting issue that feels like the middle chapter of an average X storyline. There’s nothing particularly bad here but on its own the issue doesn’t really stand out.
To solve that issue before them the X-Men come together with some creative solutions and one in particular that help us learn more about Xavier in Fantomex’s body. What powers does he still have? What doesn’t he? We get a taste of that here and it’s a smart way to introduce this character to readers. Soule brings us some humor to it and I’m guessing a little foreshadowing as well.
We also get a better idea of what this new Proteus is up to. It’s a decent villain move but I’m not completely convinced of the motivation based on interactions from the previous issue.
The art by Matteo Buffagni is decent with some good depictions of the characters, the tech, and the country they’re battling in. It all looks distinctive enough so that it all doesn’t fall into the “generic” location other series fall in to. The characters too look good as well and while the issue as a whole doesn’t quite have that dynamic moment, it looks good.
The issue is a middle grade one. It’s not bad in any way and it has a goal of setting things up for the next couple of issues. It does that and does it really well. As part of the whole story, it’s good but on its own it falls a little short.
