Andre the Giant Gets a Biopic Courtesy of Lion Forge Comics and Stone Village

LionForge-Andre_PromoArt1Lion Forge Comics and producers Scott Steindorff and Dylan Russell have partnered to develop a feature film about the life of legendary pro wrestler Andre “the Giant” Roussimoff, based on the authorized graphic novel biography published last year, Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven. Roussimoff’s daughter Robin Christensen-Roussimoff will consult on the film and assigned the exclusive rights for the biography to the producers.

Written by Eisner Award-nominated writer Brandon Easton and illustrated by Denis Medri, Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven was nominated for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity and three Glyph Awards. It recounts the famed wrestler’s life from his earliest days working on the family farm in France along with the rise of professional wrestling itself, from a global circuit of underground matches to the global phenomenon it is today, due in large part to Andre the Giant’s celebrity. It is being republished in a new edition this month.

Steward and Lion Forge CCO Carl Reed will produce with Steindorff and Russell of Stone Village Productions, with Joel Falderon as a co-producer and Barry Alexander as an associate producer. Jimmy Thomas will executive produce.

Mini Reviews For Week Ending 11/29

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling short reviews from the staff of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full review for. These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews.

Alex

all new wolverine 2All-New Wolverine #2* wasn’t as captivating for me as the first issue. It did advance the story a fair bit, perhaps more so than the first issue, and there was some nice glimpses into Laura’s life away from the X-Men and her skill set. But it just felt… lacking to me. Perhaps a victim of my own high expectations? If you read this comic, I genuinely hope you enjoy it more than I did. Overall Rating: 7 Recommendation: Read

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1* – Yeah, this series is going to be amazing. The set up this issue is fantastic. Overall Rating: 8.25 Recommendation: Buy now so you don’t have to play catch up later

Tempered Steele #1 looks like it came straight out of the 90’s. It probably could have stayed there. Overall Rating: 6 Recommendation: Pass

Brett

Angela: Queen of Hel #2 * The comic has fantastic art, which is generally better than the story which feels a little plodding. It has some of the narrative issues that I found irritating in The Mighty Thor in its last run. Still, the concept is interesting and I want to see what a Hel is like with Angela in charge. I’m just not sure I’ll stick around to actually see that. Overall Rating: 7.4 Recommendation: Read

All-New Wolverine #2* – I wasn’t blown away by the first issue and the second doesn’t quite do it for me either. Again, the comic feels like its cribbed a bit from Orphan Black, but missing what makes that show fun. Overall Rating: 6.5 Recommendation: Pass

howling commandos 2

Batman: Endgame #1 Director’s Cut – The comic initially was a solid read, so to be able to check it out again, this time with notes from the creators and a look at the pencils is really cool. I’d love to see more of these types of releases especially in trades and graphic novels. The pencils especially are amazing to look at. Overall Rating: 8.5 Recommendation: Buy

Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 * – The second issue feels a lot like Ghostbusters in many ways. In fact dump Egon, Ray, Peter, and Winston and it’d totally be exactly that. It’s not a bad thing, and that type of comic is missing from the Marvel line-up. The comic is decent fun, didn’t quite blow me away, but the concept is interesting. I’d maybe prefer a more hardcore horror vibe and look, but I’m interested in still seeing where the series goes. Overall Rating: 7 Recommendation: Read

Superman #46* – I can see what writer Gene Luen Yang is going for in the current arc. There’s an attempt to talk about the mythology of the superhero through a fight club. It’s an interesting concept, but the execution doesn’t quite work for me. Also Superman’s return is being choreographed a bit too much. Just not clicking. Overall Rating: 6.5 Recommendation: Pass

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #2 * – The comic continues to be very cute and fun. It continues to find humor in the small things, and the writing is top notch when it comes to that. Just a solid fun comic that pulls of its goal of entertaining through humor. Overall Rating: 7.8 Recommendation: Read

Elana
kaptara 5

The Fadeout #11 – The best noir comic. One point that needs to be repeated is that frequently when watching film noir or reading crime fiction there is a certain sense of alienation that the reader experiences from the subject matter. Here that’s not the case. I really care about the characters, the screenwriter protagonist, his friend the blacklisted screenwriter. But especially the women– both living and dead. It makes the cliffhanger at the end of this issue really hard! Stunning period perfect art too. Overall Rating: 8.5 Recommendation: Buy

Kaptara #5 – Super fun He-Man on acid with a queer sensibility. The art reveals more and more the longer you look at it. Seriously, go back and look over former issues to see funny and inventive details you missed. The final two page spread presents a cast of villain characters that’s quite something to behold! Overall Rating: 8 Recommendation: Buy

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 – Funny and emotional too. I’m sure many kids in comic reading demographics will identify with Lunella’s problems at school (“too smart for her own good”). I’m glad to see key aspects of Kirby’s original designs and worldbuilding are still there. And boy do we need more protagonists like Lunella. I’d give it an 8.5 for kids.

Mr H

DKIII promo image SDCCDark Knight III: The Master Race #1* – Wow. All I could think while reading this is, why couldn’t this be what the Dark Knight Strikes Again have been? The art by Kuburt fantastically channels Miller in many shots (especially the long ones) I enjoyed seeing Diana and Lara again too. I liked the use of texting and social media in a stylized manner to tell the story’s introduction. I won’t spoil the ending but the cliffhanger was epic. The back up story drawn by Miller featuring The Atom was great too. This book was worth the wait. Only problem is I have another wait until the next one! Overall Rating: 9.5 Recommendation: Buy

Shean

Andre The Giant: Closer to Heaven TPB – I was a huge fan of wrestling when I was a child so definitely was hyped about this trade. Read the TPB by First Second, which was great , so was not sure how good this was going to be, in my opinion it surpassed it. Excellent overview of Andre’s life by Brandon Easton. Remarkable illustrations by Denis Medri.
Story: 10 Art: 10 Overall: 10 Recommendation: Definitely Buy

Review: André The Giant: Closer To Heaven

LionForge-Andre_COVIf you’re of a certain age, or have even a passing familiarity with professional wrestling, then you will probably have heard about André René Roussimoff, known to many as André The GiantMy first introduction to André came, as with many others, through the world of professional wrestling. I remember to this day the first time I saw him throw grown men around the squared circle as if they were children, and it was awesome (note, that I’m not encouraging you to throw children about). André was a larger than life figure, a man known largely because of his size, and this biography takes a deeper look at this legendary man.

Brandon Easton tells the biographical tale of André in a somber voice that genuinely feels as if it is being told by the man himself. Touching and graceful, André The Giant: Closer To Heaven is a fantastic example of using the graphic novel format to tell a biographical story, and with André being a professional wrestler (a business that can often feel like a living comic book), I honestly don’t know whether a full text book would be as impactful as the graphic novel format is. The art from Denis Medri is fantastic here; from the line work, to the muted colouring,  to the very layouts of the panels on the pages, the art is simple yet evocative. The emotions conveyed through Andre’s body language and facial expressions are incredible. The letterer, Adrian Martinez, does something spectacular with the way in which the narrative text is framed within and around the art without using the traditional text boxes for André’s introspective first person narrative. Although it is a purely visual effect, it is just wonderful.

The pages feel organic, and with everything coming together so effortlessly, the graphic novel is a very pleasurable read that I devoured in two sittings.

André The Giant’s story is one that mirrors professional wrestling; as his star rose, so did the profile of the professional wrestling business, but although wrestling was a massive part of André’s life, this is a book that tends to focus more on the man rather than the wrestler. That’s not to say that André The Giant: Closer To Heaven glosses over any of André’s wrestling achievements, indeed with that being such a big part of his life that would lessen the impact of this book, instead the biography allows the reader to get a closer look at a side of the larger than life that few ever saw.

There should be no surprises in how this book ends, but it’s absolutely a journey worth taking. André The Giant: Closer To Heaven was compiled with help from André’s daughter, Robin Christensen-Roussimoff, and there is a touching inclusion from her in the pages of the book.

This is a beautiful story about a man who touched the lives of millions, and gives us a glimpse into the life a great man. As a glimpse into the life behind the legend, you don’t need to be a wrestling fan to appreciate this book. As a graphic novel, this is a superb story that’s heartfelt and touching; as a biography it is a fantastic look at a legendary professional wrestler and a beloved actor. I love absolutely everything about this book, from Denis Medri’s art to the words Brandon Easton uses, and the way in which Adrian Martinez has carefully incorporated the text into the art guiding your eye gently to the next area.

This is just a brilliant book from cover to cover, and if you have even a passing interest in André “The Giant” Roussimoff then you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

HERO HOURLY COVERWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Alex

Top Pick: Wrath Of The Eternal Warrior #1 (Valiant) – The Eternal Warrior has become one of my favourite comic book characters recently, and with this new series being the first released when my ear is turned toward Valiant has really got me excited.

Hero Hourly #1 (21 Pulp) – What if your day job was to be a superhero? What if instead of asking “you want fries with that?” you were punching people just waiting for the clock to tick own? Yeah, I can’t wait to get my hands on this inaugural offering from 21 Pulp.

The Paybacks #3 (Dark Horse) – Probably one of the funniest series on my pull list, the idea of a superhero repo squad is hillarious. If you can’t tell, I seem to have a hankering for non-traditional superhero fare this week.

Red Thorn #1 (Vertigo) – After talking with David Baillie and Meghan Hetrick about this comic (the writer and artist, respectively), I’m really pumped to check this out on Wednesday. That it’s chock full of Scottish mythology is also very interesting, as I know very little about that, and I’m looking forward to read some more.

Brett

Top Pick: Hero Hourly #1 (21 Pulp) – You think your job sucks? 21 Pulp kicks off their publishing slate with this new series which sees an average joe who can’t get the work he wants after college taking on a low paying gig as a superhero. Yes, superheroes are hired out as hourly security guards

Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven (Lion Forge/IDW Publishing) – I remember watching WWE/WWF when I was a kid in the 80s, and one of the rockstars of that time was Andre the Giant, the mountain of a man. This graphic novel, working with his daughter, presents us the life of this legend. There’s already been one graphic novel released on Andre, and I loved that, and am looking forward to seeing how this one compares.

The Paybacks #3 (Dark Horse) – One of the funniest comics out there right now. It’s a superhero repo team. If that idea alone doesn’t put a smile on your face…

Star Wars: Vader Down #1 (Marvel) – I’ve read the first issue and if you’re a fan of Marvel’s Star Wars comics, you’ll love this start of their first crossover event. So good.

Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #1 (Valiant) –  When I think of Valiant, I think quality. The event Book of Death really shook up the Eternal Warrior setting him upon this new path. When it says Valiant, I know I’m going to be entertained and this kicking off a new series is a great place to start and find out yourself.

Elana

Top Pick: Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #4 (Image Comics)Phonogram is the best new comic around. I wrote an essay on why. A must for all music lovers and comics fans alike.

Jughead #2 (Archie Comics) – It’s a new world — one in which people who mostly read super heroes or read creator-owned comics are won over by the quirky humor and art of Chip Zardski and Erica Henderson. A world where people like me actually read an Archie comic. I truly enjoyed this new take on the world of Archie. From what I know of Jughead (ok, not much) Erica and Chip are channeling Jughead’s spirit for a new age. Really fun.

The Mighty Thor #1 (Marvel) – Thor is still Doctor Jane Foster, therefore I’m still interested.

Pretty Deadly #6 (Image Comics) – Pretty Deadly is about Death’s Daughter. But the real focus is the comic’s atmosphere — like a psychedelic Western movie, and the unusual poetic rhythm of its prose. This new arc takes place many years after issue 5. It starts like a psychedelic western too but it ends like…. you’ll just have to read it.

We all know who he is and we all remember the first time we saw him: Andre the Giant, towering over his opponents in the ring, a brute force of nature with a gentle smile and breezy sense of humor, an apparent contradiction that created a magnetic attraction to his fans. True pro wrestling fans know all the ups and downs of his career and everyone else knows him as an ‘80s pop culture icon, the lovable giant in The Princess Bride. But few know the true life story behind the legend, a story more incredible than anything that could be concocted for a Pay-Per-View special. This is the story Lion Forge Comics is bringing to fans in the authorized graphic novel biography, Andre the Giant: Closer to Heaven.
