Get Comics and Help a Charity With Groupees.com

Groupees.com is a website where they organize comic, game, and/or music and bundle them up to benefit charities. Similar to the video game focused Humble Bundle. They’ve launched a Indie Comic bundle with some killer titles including, !, American Terrorist, Evil Diva, Grimm Crew Presents: Dead Future, Grimm Crew Presents: Winter’s Eye, Myth, Smoke & Mirror, Spies, Swipe, The Deadbeat, and The Lexian Chronicles. That’s a whole lot of comics and you get to help a charity!

The platform is aimed at turning the digital download experience into a fun, social event. This campaign includes titles from Alterna, Markosia, Raven Warren, GrayHaven, Angry Viking, and A Wave Blue World. When people buy the bundle they can choose for part of their contribution to be donated to one of 3 wildlife charities, Wolf Haven International, Animal Welfare Institute, and Farm Sanctuary.

Having read a few of these comics, it’s well worth the money, even if it’s just a dollar (we encourage you to give more though). When certain goals are met, new comics unlock as well, this is a great idea and we encourage everyone to pitch in! The event runs until March 6.

NYCC 11 – Review – American Terrorist Chapter 1 and 2

Leading up to New York Comic Con, writer Tyler Chin-Tanner was nice enough to hook me up with the first seven issues if his debuting series, American Terrorist.  I’ve gotten through the first two and can’t wait to read the rest.

The comic follows a newspaper reporter whose life spirals out of control as the stories he follows gets him watched by the FBI and eventually branded a terrorist.  The comic isn’t exactly what I thought it’d be, which was a focus on a domestic terrorist and their motivation, instead it’s a comedy of errors that gets Owen Graham into trouble.

Much like thousands of Americans, he unjustly is identified and branded a person of interest.  All he’s been doing is his job, which is a reporter.  This leads to an overzealous FBI agent chasing him across the country and a conflict at the end of the second issue that is best to not give away.

But the main focus of the series, so far is how three innocent individuals are wrongly identified and branded as terrorists.  They all happen into this in their own way, two through their job, one through mental issues.  It’s a great statement as to where we as Americans are and a solid reminder that we’re all a simple mistake away from being watched and branded an enemy of the state.

NYCC 11 – American Terrorist Released at NYCC 2011

Official Press Release

American Terrorist Released at NYCC 2011

“We are all Americans, and we are all suffering under the same broken system.”

–Michael, American Terrorist

A Wave Blue World announces the release of their new graphic novel, American Terrorist, at the New York Comic Con this October 13-16 at Small Press table 2542.  Cover

American Terrorist is the story of average Americans who get fed up with the system and start their own revolution. It is a 214-page graphic novel written by Tyler & Wendy Chin-Tanner (Adrenaline) and drawn by Andy MacDonald (Punisher, Terminator)

The NYCC release will feature a limited run of the black and white edition. A full color version will be digitally released at the same time through online retailers such as Comics by Comixology. The color art was done by Matt Wilson (Wonder Woman, Wolverine) and Michael Wiggam (Star Wars).

A war has been waged against the American people. It’s a covert war, one that those in power hope will go unnoticed, but day by day, jobs, homes, pensions, healthcare coverage, quality of life, and civil liberties are taken away, while the gap between the haves and the have-nots grows wider and wider.

With no way out, four activists become fugitives from the law and go on the offensive against corruption and injustice. Sharing their story with the nation using social media, they inspire their followers to rise up and reclaim their country.

Small Press Expo 2011

Bookmark and Share

Small Press ExpoWith such huge names as Chester Brown, Craig Thompson, Matthew Thurber and Sarah Glidden to name just a few, this past weekend’s Small Press Expo, held each year just North of Washington, DC continued to show off why it’s one of the best comic book shows in the nation.  The intimacy of the setting and quality of not just the guests, but also the panels makes it one of the few conventions in which you can shake hands with your favorite writers and artists but also be educated along the way.

This year continued the convention’s growth seeing record crowds that cause traffic jams in the aisles on Saturday.  But the best part of the show was watching comic book fans buying books from independent creators trying to get their materials into the hands of fans.  Much of the work here you won’t find at comic book stores and you’d have to dig on the web.  This is one of those few opportunities where you can really see true independent artists and talk to them directly.

What’s great in this setting is the fact that you indeed can talk to the creator of the book you just purchased.  It’s more than just simply getting an autograph or a sketch after handing over your money, you also get a chance to pick their brain or hear them directly tell you about their work.  There’s a connection that’s often missed at larger shows where an assembly line mentality takes over to turn and burn autographs to get through the crowds.

Even after the show door closes you’re able to head to the hotel bar and continue the schmoozing with fans, publishers, artists and writers well into the night.  It provides an experience like no other show I’ve been too.

The buzz of the show was BOOM! Studio‘s first ever attendance with the focus on their BOOM! Town and kaboom! line of comic books.  Roger Langridge was their to represent his new graphic novel The Show Must Go On which is being published but the company.  Some questions were raised if this set a bad precedent, but their being there was not only appropriate but welcomed.  There’s numerous types of “small press” and “independent press” and BOOM! absolutely qualifies.  Many of the artists and writers who attended have had books sold by major publishers like Vertigo, and there was no question as to their right to attend.  Overall, it seemed to be more about snootiness and taste than an actual issue.  Here’s hoping BOOM! will be back next year.

While my pile of books wasn’t as big as last year, there’s some quality material here (and at the show in general).  I walked away with numerous ashcans left out on tables for free, but also purchased were:

  • Freedom – Seamus Heffernan debuted his Xeric Grant backed comic book at the show.  It explores a world in which the British won the War for Independence.
  • Forever Winter – There’s those comics you hold in your hand and have to get, this was that one.  It started off as a webcomic, the art is solid and haunting with what looks to be an excellent story about serial killer and the backdrop of a world of dark clouds and endless snow.
  • Americans UK – The crazy series’ latest issue was at the show for purchase. Not only did I grab it, but also a dirt cheap t-shirt with the comic’s logo.
  • American Terrorist – The full graphic novel will debut at New York Comic Con in a month but the sketchbooks that give you a good taste of the comic were on hand for purchase.
  • A Home for Mr. Easter – Brooke A. Allen’s comic about a young girl who finds the real life Easter bunny is cute, funny and a great read.

The worst part now is it’s another year until we get together again.
