Chinese Printers Censor Comic Book

Bleeding Cool is reporting that Archaia’s new graphic novel Titanium Rain by Josh Finney was delayed due to the refusal of the Chinese printing company to print the book feeling it contained “politically sensitive content” that the government opposes.  The series portrays a future civil war in China.

Josh Finney had this to say:

“What I find very telling about the whole situation is at no point does our book criticize the current Chinese government or any of its policies,” say author/co-artist Josh Finney. “The scenario I wrote is patterned after the Boxer Rebellion, and is meant to be a statement against ultra-nationalism and ethnic cleansing. In fact, it is ultra-nationalists in the Chinese military who attempt to overthrow the government in Titanium Rain.”

Are Those Boobs in My Comic?

Is it parents freaking out week?  Did I miss the memo?  A Utah mother is in an uproar after comics she purchased at the local Dollar Tree contained pictures of female breasts.  Linda Hurst purchased the stack of comics to include in Easter baskets.  One of the comics was a 1987 issue of the Spectre which contained the offending image.  When dealing with the issue, she of course went to ABC 4 to complain.

When 10 year old Sheldon Conley saw the image he immediately took it to his parents.

“I seen the naked lady and I got mad.” Ten year old Sheldyn Conley loves comic books but knew something was wrong when he opened “The Spectre.” He says, “I just turned the page and I seen the naked ladies so I handed it to a grownup and said, ‘Look at this.'”

It’s somewhat admiral that a 10 year old child handed the comic over to a grownup, but at the same time it’s sad there’s such an issue over a drawing of the nude form.  I hope the kid never goes to an art gallery, who knows what he’ll see!

But, in fairness when a package says:

“All comic books inserted in the “Superhero Comic Book Spectacular” are family friendly and will bring hours of enjoyable reading.”

You really shouldn’t have to worry about any sense of nudity or violence.  Hope the kid likes Archie!

When presented with the issue, the Dollar Tree manager Tiffany Miller pulled the items from the shelves explaining they are promotional items that other stores couldn’t sell and informed her boss of the situation.  The other comics included in the package were fine, they only included violence.

New Yorker Condemns Kick-Ass

Bookmark and Share

The New Yorker has decided to take up arms against Kick-Ass (you can find our review here).  In the review the writer clearly thinks less of comic books and pop culture as a whole than normal high literary fair you’d find in books.  What’s fascinating is the reviewer clearly aware the movie is based off of a comic book writes as if director Matthew Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman are responsible for the entire plot and story, but I digress.

In a rant that condemns everyone from the adapters of the comic to the MPAA, the reviewer attempts to sound intelligent about his subject with lines such as:

“Kick-Ass” is violence’s answer to kiddie porn.

I wonder if the reviewer “gets” the movie at all?  The sophistication that the Anthony Lane mocks in the beginning of the article is lost on him.  I wasn’t a fan of the movie, but understood it’s point by showing such violence depicted by such young individuals a point clearly lost on Lane.

The review focuses on the children committing violent acts as if the age of the transgressor matters.  Is it any better if a 30 year old woman says the “c” word?  Or was Pulp Fiction’s violence brilliant only because it was acted out by adults?  That’s part of the point of Kick-Ass, a fact Lane in his clear snobbishness chooses to overlook.

Jeff Smith Responds to Bone Ban Attempt

Bookmark and Share

A few days ago we brought you news of a parent’s attempt to get Jeff Smith’s comic book series Bone banned from her local library.  Robot 6 got Smith’s response to the controversy at last weekend’s C2E2.

At his panel spotlight he had this to say:

She objected to the gambling, smoking and drinking and the sexiness. I feel sorry for her son.  He’s going to be really embarrassed, but you know, not everybody has to like my stuff. That’s fine.  But I really can’t go along with this un-American concept of banning books.  Let the Nazis do that.

Ramona DeLay of Apple Valley, Minnesota complained about the depictions of “drinking, smoking, gambling and “sexual situations between characters,” and is asking for the comics to be removed from the district’s 18 elementary schools; 12 of those schools have at least one volume of Bone available to students.

On April 27 the Reconsideration Review Committee will meet to discuss the request.  Out of 20 requests in the past, they’ve only removed items in three instances.

Review – Angelus #3

Bookmark and Share

Angelus #3There’s a problem starting with a series in the third issue, by then the plot is rolling the folks you aren’t interested have left and you’re left with those invested.  Even with a page recounting what’s occurred before, I’m still left scratching my head.  Angelus #3 is hard to review as it’s not a bad issue, there’s parts I very much enjoyed, but mixed with unfamiliarity with what’s gone on for the previous two issues makes it a tough task.  But, I’ll do my best and judge it as best as I can as a stand alone issue.

Ron Marz has the story duty weaving a tale about the bearer of light a primal force of the universe (the Angelus), Danielle Baptiste and her return to her hometown of New Orleans.  She’s accompanied by Finch a female friend who wants a romantic relationship with Danielle.  Points are scored for having a lesbian main character and the subtlety of having to deal with her father, who doesn’t know.  It’s fresh territory and handled really well.  There’s also some plot of some Angelus warriors trying to get some object (that’s the part I’m baffled about).  But lets skip that.

The second half of the story sees the return of Jackie Estacado the bearer of the Darkness, the enemy of the Angelus.  Really the issue turns into one giant fight scene with Mardi Gras as the backdrop.  That’s the low point.  It’s a predictable fight with predictable dialogue and I could of done without it.  Issue four could make the fight worthwhile.

But, it’ll be easier to critique and dissect the finer points in the review below.

From the Top Cow release:

Guest Starring the Darkness!
Since the beginning of time, the Angelus has been diametrically opposed to the Darkness. But will Danielle Baptiste, the newest bearer of the Angelus, be able to choose her own path when confronted by sometimes ally Jackie Estacado, bearer of the Darkness?

Plot: Ron Marz is the master of the Top Cow universe handling some of the major titles like Witchblade and Magdalena.  It’s refreshing to see a lesbian as a main character out of these three series that all star women.  There’s potential gold here that GLAAD should keep their eye on come time next year to recognize these types of things.  The banter between Danielle, Finch and Danielle’s father was fantastic and a series that had that as a major point would definitely be worth the purchase.  The plot derails for me in the fight with the Darkness which is predictable down to the dialogue.  The usual “I want to be your friend” statements are thrown around and my guess is we’ll see the fight either interrupted or a bigger threat come where they have to team up in the next issue (or further down the road).  Then again I could be surprised.  Rating: 7.25 (it’d been so much higher without the fight).

Art: Stjepan Sejic provides the art duties for the comic with an almost painted feel.  I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the style.  At times it leaves out the much needed details that add those small touches that I tend to enjoy in my art, but you’re preference may vary.  My biggest issue with the art style is there are quite a few instances where the demons look mighty familiar and there’s clear inspiration from other works.  In a scene where the Angelus warriors are confronted by various demons the one on the left looks a lot like one from Hellboy, the big one screams Warhammer 40K Demon Prince and then we have Cthulhu to round out the bunch.  It’s nice to look at and at times the style is very cool, but overall for a comic, it’s just not my thing.  Rating: 7.0

Overall: Again, I’m torn.  The character interaction is fantastic and with a focus on that and their personal lives the series is a winner.  Throw in the backdrop of New Orleans (and I hope Katrina is addressed) and you have potentially an amazing must read series, just bring us something new with the action or dial it back.  There a fork in the road as to where this series goes, and I’m hoping it’s the one dominated less by cheesy fights and mores o by characters with depth and layers. Overall Rating: 7.25

Recommendation: For new readers, pass.

Review – Magdalena #1

Bookmark and Share

Magdalena #1Going into the Magdalena #1 I was a blank slate.  I knew nothing about the character other than her brief appearance in some Witchblade comics I read, and that she had something to do with the Catholic Church.  It was nice to come into a property with no expectations and no preconceived notion other than the writer of the series Ron Marz has previously produced some top notch material.  I have to say, I’m impressed.  It’s a fun, interesting series with not an original plot, but still it felt fresh.

The series follows the Magdalena’s are descendent of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene (how hasn’t this series caused more of an uproar!?) who serve the Catholic Church in fighting evil.  Is it an original plot?  Nope, we’ve seen it tread before, but throw in a layered history, some action, beautiful art and suddenly it stands out from similar material.

Marz does it again; pushing the plot with just enough held back that you needMagdalena Interior to work a bit on the relationships and where certain tension arises.  The main characters banter is descent, and believable, with a nice flow.  The pencils by Nelson Blake II, inks by Sal Regla and color by Dave McCaig create a tapestry that holds up to the high art standard I’d expect from a Top Cow comic book.

Is the comic perfect, no, it’s not?  Is it entertaining, yes, it is?  If you enjoy the Top Cow universe or the idea of a Catholic Church backed woman who kick’s ass appeals to you, it’s definitely worth a shot.

From the Top Cow release:

The Magdalena has been the official protector and warrior of the Catholic Church for over two thousand years, sworn to defend the Faith with the Spear of Destiny against all manner of supernatural threats. However, Patience, the latest Magdalena, has seen through the hypocrisy of her masters and struck out on her own. When her old mentor comes to her with a mission to prevent Armageddon, will she be able to resist the call?

From writer Ron Marz (Witchblade, Angelus) and the art team of Pilot Season: Murderer, Nelson Blake II, Sal Regla, and Dave McCaig.

Featuring covers by Ryan Sook (Wednesday Comics)!

Plot: Ron Marz is the master manipulator of the Top Cow universe with his work including this new series, Witchblade, Angelus, Velocity and Artifacts.  The man can write dialogue and plots a good book, never quite laying everything out there in dialogue and knowing when to let the visuals speak for themselves.  It’s definitely a fun entertaining read in that sense.  Marz also masterfully introduces you to the character and hints at the rich history of those that came before her.  This is truly a good starting point.  Rating: 8.0

Art: Pencils by Nelson Blake II, inks by Sal Regla and color by Dave McCaig create the usual quality you’d expect from a Top Cow comic which all tend to have a similar feel in the looks department.  It’s very much a line of comics you can pick out based on the style and visuals, and that’s not a bad thing.  It’s definitely nice to look at, and adds to Marz’s dialogue and plot with beautiful visuals and some nice panoramas.  There’s some small issues here and there with consistency in the characters or far away shots where you lose detail but none of it takes away from the comic.  Rating: 7.75

Overall: As we discussed above, the series isn’t rocket science or exploring deep philosophical questions.  It’s an action comic featuring a badass heroine who just so happens to be Jesus’ descendent and works for the Catholic Church fighting demons.  If that appeals to you, you’ll like the series.  Its clear this is a fresh starting point and is meant to be so.  You don’t need to come into this series being bogged down in history of the character, you only need to focus on what’s going to happen.  A perfect starting point for the new reader in Magdalena’s journey and one we’d recommend you take.  Overall Rating 8.0
