From Oregonlive.com:

The exhibit, sponsored by the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, Stumptown Comics Fest, the Sequential Art Gallery and MacTarnahan’s Brewing Company, features work by 45 local comic book artists, including Paul Guinan, Erika Moen, Garrett Izumi and Indigo Kelleigh. The show will be on display at the Antoinette Hatfield Hall, 1111 S.W. Broadway, through May 31. The opening reception happens at 6 p.m. Thursday at the PCPA ArtBar & Bistro. And don’t forget: Stumptown Comics Fest is coming up, April 24-25.

To Save The World, One Of These X-Men Will Die

Marvel’s been teasing that a character will die during Second Coming and we’ll find out the answer of who this April 28 in X-Force #26.  And with that revelation Marvel has released another teaser.

From left to right are Colossus, Magik, Iceman, Angel, Emma Frost, Nightcrawler and Cable.  Who do we think will bite it?

Colossus – Not likely, with the return of Kitty Pryde and his sister Magik there’s too many stories down the line to milk.

Magik – Again, she has her own storyline in New Mutants, though we’ve learned it’s not the real Magik that returned.

Iceman – To kill off a founding member, it’d take major cajones?

Angel – I think there’s a possibility here and he’d return full time as Archangel.

Emma Frost – She needs to stick around to set up some tension with the eventual return of Jean Grey, it’d not be likely.  Though Cyclops could be interesting with a “why do my girlfriends keep dying” complex.  But there’s a few characters who already have that role, including Wolverine.

Nightcrawler – Everyone likes him and his role has been usurped a bit by Pixie.  There’s a chance he’s the one biting the dust, but….

Cable – Well something needs to set Hope off and his death could be the catalyst and out of everyone he’s the easiest to bring back.  They’ll just say it’s him from another time period before he jumped to the events that lead up to Second Coming.  If you’re putting money down, he’d be the one I’d go with.

Walking Dead Casts It Lead

Bookmark and Share

Andrew LincolnWe’ve been waiting for the news of who’s shoulders AMC’s upcoming adaptation of the comic book series the Walking Dead will weigh upon and yesterday we found our answer.  Andrew Lincoln who you might know from Love Actually will be filling the role of main character Rick Grimes.

The series written by Robert Kirkman follows the survivors of a zombie apocalypse.  Instead of relying on the usual scares you’d expect from a zombie comic, the series focuses on the human interactions and psychological impact of living in such a world.

Kirkman had this to say about the casting:

Andrew Lincoln, wow — what an amazing find this guy is…. Writing Rick Grimes month after month in the comic series, I had no idea he was an actual living breathing human being, and yet here he is.

Frank Darabont (Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption) will be directing, executive producing, and writing the show, which films in Atlanta in June of this year.

Here’s this week’s quotes showing that comics aren’t just for kids anymore.  Everything from war and abortion to free speech were touched upon.

Liberty News 24/7 – A special session of Congress has convened to petition the United Nations, a body that the United States was forced to quit at the start of the war, for support in a renewed mission to not merely contain the Free States movement…. but, in the words of an unnamed source on the senior staff, “To defeat them in the fullest military sense of the term.”

Ex Machina #48

January – It skeeves me out whenever a dude tries to parlay any kind of success into a political career.  There’s only one reason guys like that get into Government.  It starts with “p” and ryhmes with “pussy.”

and

January – Then what’s his angle?  I mean, are there any issues he even cares about?  I’ve just seen that one commercial where he spouts a bunch of platitudes about building bridges.  Like, how pro-choice is he?

Journal – I don’t know actually.

January – You don’t know where he stands on abortion?

Journal – I’m not a single-issue voter January.

Green Hornet #2

Metro Staffer – Deanley just passed Scanlon in the latest poll.

Britt Reid – By how much?

Metro Staffer – Twelve points.  You sure you wanna continue to back the lame-duck Mayor in his re-election bid?

and

Britt Reid – That’s not what I’m talking about, Frank.  I’m talking about their sizable donations to your re-election campaign.

Frank Scanlon – They’re entitled to their opinion on who’d they’d like to see running this city just like everyone else, aren’t they?

Prelude to Deadpool Corps. #5

Weekly Review

Bookmark and Share

We were traveling this past weekend so we’re a bit late in out weekly review.  This week it’ll be replacing our normal Tuesday Twitter Fun.  It’s the end of Blackest Night but the beginning of Second Coming.  Was DC’s event worth it?  And how is Marvel’s next event shaping up?

Monthly Comics

Blackest Night #8 – It’s the end of the Green Lantern’s major event, but was it worth it?  While the art was amazing, the story itself feels it comes off as an attempt by DC to reset characters they regret killing off.  The resurrection of so many makes their deaths hallow and the shock of some of them diminishes now.  Was this all a ploy to reboot stale characters?  We’ll see.  With the Brightest Day right around the corner we’d hope we’ll see a reflection on what the return of so many means and there better be some inner struggle with it.  DC has the opportunity to really examine life and death, lets hope they take the better road and mine that deep material instead of just throwing the returned heroes and villains into stories as if their death and return never happened.

Story: 7.75 Art: 9 Overall: 8.25

Cloak and Dagger #1 – I wasn’t expecting much from this one shot but was pleasantly surprised.  This one shot focuses in on the twosome and their unexpected inclusion into the “X” universe.  The one shot focuses on Cloak and his returning to his home town and Dagger’s reaction to his recent travels.  It’s pretty decent and the art is impressive.  I guess we’ll have to wait to see if Marvel uses these two for their potential.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8

Fantastic Four #577 – Jonathan Hickman continues to show us what we’ve been missing when it comes to Marvel’s first family.  We keep saying it but the “fantastic” has returned to this series.  We’re introduced to another city of what we’re sure is making up the four cities storyline.  We love these latest issues and looking forward to seeing where Hickman takes us.  We’re on board.

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

Green Hornet #2 – Kevin Smith continues his amazing Green Hornet series.  It’s a shame this wasn’t made into a movie.  Great dialogue, characters and plot make this one our favorite comics of the week.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Incorruptible #4 – Mark Waid continues his look at the super villain in a world turned upside down.  Why would the world’s greatest villain become a hero?  What did Max Damage witness that’d make him try the other side of the law?

Story: 8 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8

New Mutants #11 – I guess you have to do something while waiting for the next “X” event, and why would you spend that building on interesting plot threads started when this series isn’t being bogged down by crossovers.  This issue sees Valkyrie repaying her debt to Hela in this Siege tie-in.

Story: 7 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.25

Prelude to the Deadpool Corps. #5 – The end of the mini series that introduces us to the protectors of the universe.  An ongoing series begins this week, so we’re left scratching our heads as to why there was a need for the series instead of making this it.  It’s been a fun ride but as far as we’re concerned Deadpool’s jumped the shark and we’re a bit tired of him in anything other than his main series.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

Punisher #15 – We’re torn on the Frankencastle storyline as we’re a bit more traditionalist when it comes to our Punisher.  We’re hoping this is a diversion until our regular Frank programming comes back.  The Punisher goes after the army hunting monsters, that’s about it.

Story: 7 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.25

Realm of Kings: Inhumans #5 – It’s the final issue of this limited series as the Inhumans must deal with what’s returned from the fault.  We also learn more about Medusa’s rule and her motivations in her actions.  Bring on Thanos!

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.5

Unknown Soldier #18 – Just when you thought you were out they bring you back in.  Moses must deal with his slipping into madness and the actions he’s recently taken.  Easily one of the best comics on the market and one you should be looking forward to every month.  An amazing examination of sanity and the conflict in Africa.

Story: 9 Art: 8.5 Overall: 9

Dark Wolverine #84 – A Siege tie-in that continues to follow Daken’s role in the event.  It also has what might be one of the most shocking moments of the year (yes even more shocking than Ares being torn in half).

Story: 7.5 Art: 8 Overall: 7.75

X-Force #25 – What a horrible and predictable ending to what has been a crappy event.  It started off with promise and a bang and definitely ended as a whimper.  X-Force takes on Selene and her army of “undead.”  All I can say is thank god it’s over, cause this crossover has been dogshit for a while.

Story: 6.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7

X-Men: Second Coming – We’re holding out hope for this “X” event.  Cable and Hope are back in the present and Bastion and his army are on the move to take them out of action.  It’s full of action and very cool moments (the car chase anyone?).  This is Michael Bay directing an installment of an”X” event, and that’s a good thing.  It doesn’t hurt the art is impressive as well.  The issue isn’t deep, just a lot of fun and action.

Stan Lee Media Inc vs. Marvel Dismissed

Bookmark and Share

Stan LeeHeatvisionblog is reporting that the lawsuit between Stan Lee Media and Marvel has been dismissed by the judge.  The lawsuit claimed that Stan Lee Media shareholders were harmed when Lee transferred rights of characters to Marvel.  The suit was seeking $750 million.

The lawsuit which had been going on for a decade was dismissed by Judge Paul Crotty.

“It is now time to call a halt,” Crotty wrote in his 14-page opinion.

The Judge decided to dismiss the lawsuit since the two suing shareholders didn’t acquire their share until 1999, a year after the deal between Lee and Marvel.

Coroners & Justice Act 2009 Kicks in Today

Bookmark and Share

If you’re in Britain you might want to be careful as to what comprises your comic book collection.  Today marks the start of the Coroners & Justice Act 2009, a law Britain’s legal system staff were caught up on this past week.  The law extends what falls into prohibited images of children.

Below is the relevant piece of the legislation:

Chapter 2 Images of children

Prohibited images

62 Possession of prohibited images of children Show EN

(1) It is an offence for a person to be in possession of a prohibited image of a child.

(2) A prohibited image is an image which—

(a) is pornographic,

(b) falls within subsection (6), and

(c) is grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character.

(3) An image is “pornographic” if it is of such a nature that it must reasonably be assumed to have been produced solely or principally for the purpose of sexual arousal.

(4) Where (as found in the person’s possession) an image forms part of a series of images, the question whether the image is of such a nature as is mentioned in subsection (3) is to be determined by reference to—

(a) the image itself, and

(b) (if the series of images is such as to be capable of providing a context for the image) the context in which it occurs in the series of images.

(5) So, for example, where—

(a) an image forms an integral part of a narrative constituted by a series of images, and

(b) having regard to those images as a whole, they are not of such a nature that they must reasonably be assumed to have been produced solely or principally for the purpose of sexual arousal,

the image may, by virtue of being part of that narrative, be found not to be pornographic, even though it might have been found to be pornographic if taken by itself.

(6) An image falls within this subsection if it—

(a) is an image which focuses solely or principally on a child’s genitals or anal region, or

(b) portrays any of the acts mentioned in subsection (7).

(7) Those acts are—

(a) the performance by a person of an act of intercourse or oral sex with or in the presence of a child;

(b) an act of masturbation by, of, involving or in the presence of a child;

(c) an act which involves penetration of the vagina or anus of a child with a part of a person’s body or with anything else;

(d) an act of penetration, in the presence of a child, of the vagina or anus of a person with a part of a person’s body or with anything else;

(e) the performance by a child of an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal (whether dead or alive or imaginary);

(f) the performance by a person of an act of intercourse or oral sex with an animal (whether dead or alive or imaginary) in the presence of a child.

(8) For the purposes of subsection (7), penetration is a continuing act from entry to withdrawal.

(9) Proceedings for an offence under subsection (1) may not be instituted—

(a) in England and Wales, except by or with the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions;

(b) in Northern Ireland, except by or with the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions for Northern Ireland.

63 Exclusion of classified film etc Show EN

(1) Section 62(1) does not apply to excluded images.

(2) An “excluded image” is an image which forms part of a series of images contained in a recording of the whole or part of a classified work.

(3) But such an image is not an “excluded image” if—

(a) it is contained in a recording of an extract from a classified work, and

(b) it is of such a nature that it must reasonably be assumed to have been extracted (whether with or without other images) solely or principally for the purpose of sexual arousal.

(4) Where an extracted image is one of a series of images contained in the recording, the question whether the image is of such a nature as is mentioned in subsection (3)(b) is to be determined by reference to—

(a) the image itself, and

(b) (if the series of images is such as to be capable of providing a context for the image) the context in which it occurs in the series of images;

and section 62(5) applies in connection with determining that question as it applies in connection with determining whether an image is pornographic.

(5) In determining for the purposes of this section whether a recording is a recording of the whole or part of a classified work, any alteration attributable to—

(a) a defect caused for technical reasons or by inadvertence on the part of any person, or

(b) the inclusion in the recording of any extraneous material (such as advertisements),

is to be disregarded.

(6) Nothing in this section is to be taken as affecting any duty of a designated authority to have regard to section 62 (along with other enactments creating criminal offences) in determining whether a video work is suitable for a classification certificate to be issued in respect of it.

(7) In this section—

  • “classified work” means (subject to subsection (8)) a video work in respect of which a classification certificate has been issued by a designated authority (whether before or after the commencement of this section);
  • “classification certificate” and “video work” have the same meaning as in the Video Recordings Act 1984 (c. 39);
  • “designated authority” means an authority which has been designated by the Secretary of State under section 4 of that Act;
  • “extract” includes an extract consisting of a single image;
  • “pornographic” has the same meaning as in section 62;
  • “recording” means any disc, tape or other device capable of storing data electronically and from which images may be produced (by any means).

(8) Section 22(3) of the Video Recordings Act 1984 (effect of alterations) applies for the purposes of this section as it applies for the purposes of that Act.

64 Defences Show EN

(1) Where a person is charged with an offence under section 62(1), it is a defence for the person to prove any of the following matters—

(a) that the person had a legitimate reason for being in possession of the image concerned;

(b) that the person had not seen the image concerned and did not know, nor had any cause to suspect, it to be a prohibited image of a child;

(c) that the person—

(i) was sent the image concerned without any prior request having been made by or on behalf of the person, and

(ii) did not keep it for an unreasonable time.

(2) In this section “prohibited image” has the same meaning as in section 62.

65 Meaning of “image” and “child” Show EN

(1) The following apply for the purposes of sections 62 to 64.

(2) “Image” includes—

(a) a moving or still image (produced by any means), or

(b) data (stored by any means) which is capable of conversion into an image within paragraph (a).

(3) “Image” does not include an indecent photograph, or indecent pseudo-photograph, of a child.

(4) In subsection (3) “indecent photograph” and “indecent pseudo-photograph” are to be construed—

(a) in relation to England and Wales, in accordance with the Protection of Children Act 1978 (c. 37), and

(b) in relation to Northern Ireland, in accordance with the Protection of Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 (S.I. 1978/1047 (N.I. 17)).

(5) “Child”, subject to subsection (6), means a person under the age of 18.

(6) Where an image shows a person the image is to be treated as an image of a child if—

(a) the impression conveyed by the image is that the person shown is a child, or

(b) the predominant impression conveyed is that the person shown is a child despite the fact that some of the physical characteristics shown are not those of a child.

(7) References to an image of a person include references to an image of an imaginary person.

(8) References to an image of a child include references to an image of an imaginary child.

66 Penalties Show EN

(1) This section has effect where a person is guilty of an offence under section 62(1).

(2) The offender is liable—

(a) on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding the relevant period or a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum, or both;

(b) on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or a fine, or both.

(3) “The relevant period” means—

(a) in relation to England and Wales, 12 months;

(b) in relation to Northern Ireland, 6 months.

67 Entry, search, seizure and forfeiture Show EN

(1) The following provisions of the Protection of Children Act 1978 (c. 37) apply in relation to prohibited images of children as they apply in relation to indecent photographs of children (within the meaning of that Act)—

(a) section 4 (entry, search and seizure);

(b) the Schedule (forfeiture of photographs).

(2) The following provisions of the Protection of Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 (S.I. 1978/1047 (N.I. 17)) apply in relation to prohibited images of children as they apply in relation to indecent photographs of children (within the meaning of that Order)—

(a) Article 4 (entry, search and seizure);

(b) the Schedule (forfeiture of photographs).

(3) In this section “prohibited image of a child” means a prohibited image of a child to which section 62(1) applies.

68 Special rules relating to providers of information society services Show EN

Schedule 13 makes special provision in connection with the operation of section 62(1) in relation to persons providing information society services within the meaning of that Schedule.

Indecent pseudo-photographs of children

69 Indecent pseudo-photographs of children: marriage etc Show EN

(1) In section 1A of the Protection of Children Act 1978 (c. 37) (making of indecent photograph of child etc: marriage and other relationships), after “photograph”, in each place it occurs, insert “or pseudo-photograph”.

(2) In section 160A of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 (c. 33) (possession of indecent photograph of child etc: marriage and other relationships), after “photograph”, in each place it occurs, insert “or pseudo-photograph”.

(3) In Article 15A of the Criminal Justice (Evidence, etc) (Northern Ireland) Order 1988 (S.I. 1988/1847 (N.I. 17)) (marriage and other relationships), after “photograph”, in each place it occurs, insert “or pseudo-photograph”.

(4) In Article 3B of the Protection of Children (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 (S.I. 1978/1047 (N.I. 17)) (marriage and other relationships), after “photograph”, in each place it occurs, insert “or pseudo-photograph”.

It’s up in the air as to how this will impact various comic books but if you’re a fan of lolicon Manga, you might want to think twice about possessing it in Britain.

IDW Comics Debut on the iPad

Official Press Release

Premier publisher at the forefront of digital distribution

Store front apps available today for
IDW Comics, TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE and Star Trek

Video demonstration of IDW comics on the iPad available here

[TRANSFORMERS on the iPad]San Diego, CA (April 3, 2010) – IDW Publishing is proud to announce that the hugely anticipated Apple iPad will feature four IDW comics applications today at launch. Taking full advantage of the iPad’s full –screen, full-color capabilities, each IDW store front will offer the next level of reading experience to fans. The free IDW iPad comic shop apps each include a selection of comics with the initial download, and offer more comics as in-app purchases. Fans can choose apps for their favorite brands, like Star Trek, G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS, or download the IDW Comics app for access to all the company’s iPad releases.

Each store front app will offer readers the highest quality viewing experience, with a full-page display that showcases the eye-catching art and vivid stories. IDW has developed several new features to enhance the comics and take full advantage of the iPad’s capabilities.

“The iPad is a wonderful format for comics, as the screen size is close enough to the print size that readers can view the full page,” said IDW Director of ePublishing, Jeff Webber. “Our iPad apps are also compatible with our iPhone and iPod touch apps. So you can purchase a comic shop apps on one device, and read it on another. The apps will automatically identify which one you are using, and adjust to offer the best reading experience.”

IDW was the first comics publisher to launch its own “in app purchase” storefronts for the iPhone and iPod touch with not one, but four new comic shop applications. For fans of G.I. JOE, TRANSFORMERS and Star Trek, IDW has introduced new comic applications that offer full collections all in one app. The company also introduced the IDW Comics app, which collects the entire digital catalog. All IDW store front apps are powered by iVerse (http://www.iversecomics.com/).

IDW currently has over 400 individual issues available through the App Store, with more available every week. IDW comics are currently available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch through the App Store.

Wondercon Exclusive Black Lantern Jordan and White Lantern Sinestro

Bookmark and Share

Going to Wondercon this weekend?  Then you’re one lucky person.  It has been announced that there will be two exclusive action figures for the show.  A Black Lantern Hal Jordan and White Lantern Sinestro (just in time for the end of the event).

Even if you’re there, you’re not guaranteed a set.  According to Comics Alliance:

Multiple ticket draws will be held throughout the weekend where winners will receive a color-coded wristband with a purchase time on it. Wristband wearers have an hour from their designated time to purchase an action figure from the Graphitti Designs booth, and that’s it. Prospective buyers can purchase up to two of each exclusive. If you don’t win a wristband on your first try at the ticket draw, you can get back on line and do it again.

Good luck to everyone there.  And anyone that gets me a set, will instantly become my best friend.

Black Lantern Jordan White Lantern Sinestro
