Review: Harbinger Renegade #7

HR_007_COVER-B_PORTELAMASSACRE has claimed a life from the Renegades’ own ranks… and their new mission starts now: to rally as many psiots to their cause as possible. Now, this damaged team of telekinetic teenagers are off the grid and on the move, traveling America to recruit soldiers for the inevitable war they all see coming. But they are being watched…

You know those comics that sound really interesting from the previews and solicits, but then fail to live up to any of the promise shown in those texts? Yeah, that’s this one.

Harbinger Renegade #7 has the dubious task of following on from an interlude issue (albeit a pretty good one) which in turn followed the first part of the Massacre story line in which half a dozen or so semi prominent Valiant characters were killed – but none of those characters had previously appeared in this series, so it’s been quite awhile since we’ve seen the Renegades in any real form – and this is our first chance to see how they’ve reacted to the events in Rook. Unfortunately, the emotion shown from the team as they react to the news of their friends being nearly wiped out feels, with one exception, a little blasé (although one could make the argument that with all the death they’ve seen in their young lives, this is exactly the point).

That being said, the tone of this issue is one of grief and how people deal with it in different ways; unfortunately the execution isn’t as strong as one would hope, and while there were an occasional small hill, overall the issue felt a little flat – though a large part of that was likely due to the art.

To say that artistically, this really wasn’t my cup of tea would be bordering on an understatement. HR_007_005 While the pages did have some interesting layouts, the art is far from my favourite. Obviously this is personal opinion, and you may love the art – if that’s the case then I’m happy for you – but I just found it generally boring. I feel the need to reiterate that this is purely personal preference because the art is well done it just didn’t excite me; in fact I felt the exact same way reading this as I would when looking at an Archie Digest comic: the art is just there, but it’s nothing special.

Ultimately this isn’t a bad issue, and I’m hesitant to rag on it too much because I feel it’s just a weaker chapter in the overall direction of the comic, rather than the new quality level we’ll get going forward. I also think that the gap between issues isn’t helping the series, either and while part of that is down to the placement of the interlude issue (which I quite enjoyed) last month that directly  interrupted the flow of the Massacre story line, the multi-month gap since we last saw the Renegade team isn’t helping either.

If you’re reading this series, then it’s worth at least flicking through Harbinger Renegade #7, but if you want to start with Valiant’s comics, then you can do a lot better than starting here.

Review: The Wicked + the Divine #31

The Wicked + the Divine #31 is the best the series has been in a long time as writer Kieron Gillen, artist Jamie McKelvie, and colorist Matthew Wilson hit a sorrowful groove as “Imperial Phase Part II” draws to a close. This is a memorable issue that will be dissected, oohed and aahed at, sobbed over, and yes, screamed at just like WicDiv #5, #8, #11, #13, and #18, which have been my favorite regular issues of the series to date. With these superlatives out of the way, WicDiv #31 features momentous events, like the Norns, Woden, and Dionysus finally turning on Ananke’s machine to the tune of a glorious Wilson color palette, Persephone coming clean, and some sort of real talk about Dio and Urdr’s feelings for each other. Plus a tragic twist.

I am really enjoying Gillen, McKelvie, and Wilson’s focus on the character of Dionysus throughout “Imperial Phase Part II”, and WicDiv #31 is no exception. In his first appearance, McKelvie draws lines on Dio’s usual smooth face and gives his eyes a hazy spaced out look, which is to be expected after he spent all of the previous issue sitting in the dark and pleading with Baphomet to leave his abusive relationship with Morrigan. McKelvie depicts Dionysus as a husk of his rave inducing self with basically bad selfie lighting from Wilson, but his wholesome spirit hasn’t faded.

He has a conversation with Urdr, who is a little on edge about the turning on Ananke’s machine thing because Woden is sketchy and Dionysus is tired, plus there’s the whole crush thing. But, even though Urdr and Dionysus don’t directly talk about their feelings for each other, Dio kind of nails how relationships and friendships should work. He basically says that emotions, especially love are important, but they shouldn’t get in the way of caring and supporting a friendship. This is really freaking selfless and par for the course for a man, who admits that his key motivation in life is making other people happy. Dionysus’ smiling face or crowd surfing body should definitely be in the dictionary next to mudita, a kind of happiness that comes from other people’s happiness. However, this ends up being his downfall as Woden uses his abilities in a more toxic way turning a happy party into a hive mind, worship into a cult. But, before everything gets fuzzy, Gillen and McKelvie give us a character defining moment of Urdr looking up and perhaps for the first time, realizing the effect the Pantheon has on other people and admiring those Eisner winning Matthew Wilson colors.

But Woden’s hijacking of Dio’s power isn’t just a simple “Dionysus is a cinnamon roll too good for this world” plot point, it actually takes WicDiv #31 back into the musical realm. Woden and Dionysus’ actions at Valhalla support my theory that, in the end, there are two kinds of dance floors: one filled with light, energy, fantastic music, and camaraderie and another one that is crowded, filled with groping straight men, and plays the Chainsmokers. Dionysus represents the first as evidenced by the immortal WicDiv #8, and Woden represents the second with misogyny, objectification of women, and general fuckboy attitude and spinelessness. Dionysus is about people having a good time and forgetting their troubles for a night and maybe having fond memories of waving their arms and dancing to “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with gods while sitting in their poorly lit cubicles. Woden is all about metaphorically (and probably) getting off the power of the patriarchy to rob women (And people in general in this issue) of their agency. It’s selfishness versus selflessness, and unfortunately, it looks like selfishness has the upper hand in 2017. But Dionysus’ nice little grape Pantheon icon isn’t a skull just yet so there might still be some hope for this beautiful, emotionally honest, and soulful man. I’m probably the naive one in this case.

Dio, Urdr, Woden, Amaterasu, and Sakhmet play the “active” roles in WicDiv #31, but Gillen and McKelvie don’t neglect their heroine, Persephone, who finally kind of does the right thing by telling Baal and the Outsiders that Sakhmet is lurking at one of her favorite haunts: the Egyptian wing of the British Museum. When Sakhmet is out, Persephone starts by lounging in her deliciously foreshadow-y skull and rose pattern leggings with McKelvie nailing her apathy before swinging into a bit of anger when she talks to her ex Baal on the phone. Plotwise, Gillen has her as a wild card, but that’s likely to change after she learns Amaterasu’s fate. Annoying problematicness aside, an Amaterasu gig back in WicDiv #1 was Persephone’s entry to the world of the Pantheon so it should have a major effect on her demeanor going forward. This issue also shows that Persephone has a bit of a conscience and is starting to maybe realize that chaos wasn’t the best decision.

Yes, chaos ends up in death: the death of Amaterasu to be particular as she goes to the British Museum to soothe the sharp teeth and claw toes of Sakhmet with her abilities instead of calling Baal for some muscle like he provided against Luci in the first arc. Amaterasu has a “nice” personality, but is supremely self-absorbed, and her little monologue about the glories of the British Empire’s treasures in the British Museum and family causes her to drop her guard around Sakhmet. It’s also a final nod towards her cultural appropriation as she has turned the Japanese Shinto faith into her own white girl ShinTwo cult, and sad, if poetic that she dies destroying the artifacts that the U.K. took from their old colony of Egypt. McKelvie frames it like a slasher flick with plenty of gore and killer/victim juxtaposition shot although this death feels earned and is also a product of stupid decisions. One thing I love about WicDiv on a macro level is that characters who make not-the-smartest-decisions like going against a bloodthirsty murderer without backup or teaming up with Woden get consequences. It’s like the early seasons of Game of Thrones where behaving nobly, yet stupidly led to death or negative consequences versus the current one starring Jon Snow of House Plot Armor.

WicDiv #31 is a smorgasbord of visual storytelling delights, like Matthew Wilson’s color palette for Dionysus’ (hopefully not) final performance) and Amaterasu’s last foray as a superpower or the weathering on Dio’s face from Jamie McKelvie, and quotable insights about friendships and relationships and even asexuality and aromanticism from Kieron Gillen via Dionysus, but it’s a big downer moment for the series even if Urdr gets her most uplifting panel yet. After the conversations, arguments, and tiptoeing around, this is the plunge after the deep breath. WicDiv #31 is the guns a-blazing after the Mexican standoff or conversations about Bible passages and American hamburgers in Paris.

To not end this review on a glib Pulp Fiction reference, WicDiv #31 (Especially the Amaterasu scenes) pairs nicely with “Rabbit Heart” by Florence + the Machine , which is one of the first tracks on Kieron Gillen’s The Wicked + the Divine playlist. It’ll break your ginger sun goddess loving heart.

Review: Batman #30

In the second “War of Jokes and Riddles” interlude, it’s the making of a super-villain! He’s been pushed by Batman to snitch on The Joker, and cajoled by The Joker to betray Batman-now, the flunky who would be Kite Man finally snaps. He’s lost everything, and a life of crime is the only way to go.

Batman #30 is the second part of “The Ballad of Kite Man” we follow up with Kite Man who’s now chest deep in Joker’s crew as the war rages between the Riddler and Joker. Batman has chosen sides and is taking down villains one by one, with some rules to go by.

The first part of “The Ballad of Kite Man” was one of the best single issues of the year and this second part is just as solid as we see a man slide into villainy… in a rather pathetic sort of way. And it’s that sad reality of the character that’s the draw.

Writer Tom King brings you into this character’s world as he reflects upon what’s going around him as he thinks about his child. You can see the desperate and sad nature of it all and by the end of the issue I felt both disgusted and sad for him. King has added more depth to Kite Man in two issues than probably all of his previous 57 years of existence. The character isn’t as much of a joke as his a tragedy. This is the average schmoe who turns to a life of crime as nothing else is working and even then no one takes him seriously. Add in domestic issues and the character feels like a fully realized arc in two issues. We see his slide and by the end of this issue it’s a very different Kite Man, one I hope we see more of.

But, it’s that end of the issue that is the answer to both the riddle and the joke. We see how both the Riddler and Batman see him and though he’s the last man standing (not really a spoiler) it’s not because of his strength but his weakness. He’s seen as a joke and thus answers the riddle of why he’s left for last. King’s set up is utterly brilliant in this way and one that you can debate at depth.

The art by Clay Mann is amazing and the use of every character is top notch. King delivers humor in his story and the panels where it exists had me laughing out loud (many say this, I actually did it) and at the same time Mann’s decisions for what he does and doesn’t show creates an ominous atmosphere of Batman stalking the Joker’s allies one by one. He’s the predator that lurks off panel that you only see quickly or at the last second. It’s the Batman we knew exists but rarely see.

Is perfection too much to call something? The first part of Kite Man’s story and this create two issues that for me is the best of the year for me. Kite Man has turned from a joke to a tragic character and one I have a lot of sympathy for. Just utter brilliance that can show that even joke characters can be made into something special.

Review: Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #2.3

Space God Monster versus Space God Monster and The One True God of Evil sings the damn ENDSONG plunging entire galaxies into the AGE OF THE ABYSS and who are the only ones that can stop it?? You know damn well who, the SPACE RIDERS!! This chapter puts the ultimate in penultimate!!

Things of myth begin to appear as the Endstorm is unleashed in Space Riders: Galaxy of Brutality #2.3. This forces Captain Peligro to act on behalf of all space riders. He comes to the rescue of the captive ones in the process, as the fight for the life of the galaxy begins. Will it survive, or is this the end? Fabian Rangel Jr. delivers cosmic sci-fi entertainment that feels like a trippy heir to the King Jack Kirby.

The art by Alexis Ziritt continues its vibrant and psychedelic color scheme, revealing more and more influence of Jack Kirby. It brings in a lot of traditional classic science fiction elements in the process creating a combination that’s as much a draw visually as it is in the narrative. The giant space whale manages to steal the spotlight with its own imposing form.

The series is a fun visual treat that is a must for anyone that loves classic sci-fi psychedelic comics.

Review: Gwar Orgasmageddon #3

GwarOrgasmageddon-03-Cov-A-Sawyer

Join the greatest heavy metal band to ever terrorize an audience, the all-mighty GWAR, as they rampage through the past to catch Mr. Perfect and shut him down for good. One part revenge, two parts bloodlust, all parts GWAR craziness! See GWAR’s influence on modern technological inventions, watch GWAR kill more historical dead guys, and drop in on a very special 1990s talk show episode taping. That’s right, this is the issue you demanded: GWAR of yesterday meets GWAR of today and things are gonna get…emotional.

In Gwar Orgasmageddon #3, the battle against the Kraken has a violent end, as the band tries to fix the cock-ship. When it displaces them to 16th Italy, they run into an old friend, an old enemy, and Leonardo DaVinci. It seems Sawborg has been busy since his run in with Mr. Perfect. The issue is the usual craziness that we’ve come to expect so far. This isn’t for the faint at heart. With only one issue left, I’m curious to see how this murderous tale of revenge and humor ends.

The art manages to mix in sizable quantities of gore, violence, and humor. It even gives a small cameo of the Oderus Urungus, as they appeared on the infamous Jerry Springer show. There’s also some interesting views of Renaissance era Italy. Even the violent scenes are getting more gore, as the series progresses.

This is a series that doesn’t take itself too seriously and likes to amp things up as high as it can go not just over the top but setting a new bar of insane fun.

Mini Reviews For The Week Ending 9/2

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling short reviews from the staff of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full review for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews.

rebels6.jpgSecret Empire #10 (Marvel) – So Nick Spencer and his bosses at Marvel editorial decided we needed one more issue of this nonsense than the originally-solicited nine, I guess, and aside from the fact that the army of artists (specifically Steve McNiven, Rod Reis, David Marquez, Paco Medina, and Ron Lim) at least turn in competent work for the most part, the best you can say for this thoroughly uninspired, predictably-resolved mess is — hey, at least it’s over with. Overall: 2 Recommendation: Pass. I purchased my copy, dumb-ass that I am.

Ringside #11 (Image)** – I’m honestly surprised that Joe Keatinge and Nick Barber are continuing this series with a new arc given that a) it almost never comes out, and b) doesn’t sell worth a damn when it does, but at least all the various characters in this wrestling-themed book have interesting, if apparently quite disparate,”arcs” — unfortunately, the farther Barber’s art devolves into pure abstraction (and not the interesting sort of abstraction, just the lazy one), the more difficult it gets to justify shelling out $3.99 a pop for this stuff. Overall: 4 Recommendation: Pass

Rebels: These Free And Independent States #6 (Dark Horse)** – Apparently Brian Wood and Andrea Mutti are wrapping up the second iteration of their Revolutionary War-era historical with a smattering of short stories just as they did last time, and this one, entitled “The Virginian,” is an especially good one, focusing on what a self-serving, reckless, back-stabbing, and arrogant asshole a young George Washington was. Not sure how accurate all the details are, but it’s gotta be more truthful than the old “I can’t tell a lie, I did chop down the cherry tree” yarn. Overall: 8 Recommendation: Buy

Generations: The Archers #1 (Marvel)** – Kelly Thompson and Stefano Raffaele give us the first one of these vaguely-connected oversized one-shots that’s actually worth a damn, and while it’s still a thowaway story quickly put to wraps, at least the characterization and dialogue are equal parts charming and effective, and the art is smooth-flowing and nicely expressive. Not worth five bucks by any stretch, but not worthless, as the rest of them have essentially been. Overall: 6 Recommendation: Read

Black-Panther-17-2017.jpgBlack Panther #17 (Marvel)– Wakanda has been in disarray for some time and T’Challa’s problems keep piling up. We find out the gods of Wakanda have gone missing, and the portals they have protected has been left unguarded, allowing rogues from T’Challa’s past to come through as well as other supernatural creatures.Lucky for him and Wakanda, Storm has come back into his life as his companion but also as queen and goddess for a people looking for a deity to believe. By books end, a fight with spider like creatures has affirmed T’Challa’s and Ororo’s belief in their path as heroes. Overall: 10 Recommendation: Buy

Black Panther and the Crew #6 (Marvel) this series is probably one for the best to come from Marvel in a while and as this is the last issue, it ends on its strengths. We get a history lesson as we find out that the Crew Frank was part of, became broken and some, even corrupt. We also return to modern day, as the all new all different crew, with Black Panther, Luke Cage, Misty Knight, Manifold, and Storm fight Americops. One of Ezra’s nephews were behind the chaos in Harlem and for now, Hydraulic plans are foiled. Overall: 10 Recommendation: Buy

Well, there you have it, folks. The reviews we didn’t quite get a chance to write. See you next week!

Review: The Interview

In your lifetime, eventually you will face “a crisis of conscience “, where it appears whatever you do, you fail. It can affect many facets of your life. In your personal life, a relationship with a loved one, may not be as good as you would like it to be. In your professional life, you may not be in the where you expected to be and may be years behind you goal.

What these facets of our life, have in common other than you are your association to people and events. People come into your life all the time, how you interact with them, determine how long they will be there. Events occur, and they much like people, can stay with you for a while. In Manuele Fior’s The Interview, an existential science fiction story, which challenges how one reacts in their professional life when their personal life falls apart.

We meet a psychologist, Raniero, living in the year 2049, in Italy who a few things going in his life which includes a marriage which is trouble, a car accident and being a victim in a crime when most people fall apart he buries himself in his work. He starts to treat a patient, Dora, who claims to have been communicating extraterrestrials in the sky, the same ones Raniero has been getting slivers of light from. As his encounters with Dora become more frequent, so does his bond with her, and he starts to realize that there may be some truth between what he sees and what she hears. By book’s end, a decision must be made and everything clings on Raniero’s belief in what is the truth.

Overall, an endearing novel that captures the reader in the most alluring ride of a story. The story by Fior will grip the reader instantly. The art by Fior, is straightforward and abstract simultaneously. Altogether, a beautiful book that will leave you wondering what the future holds.

Review: The Silence of Our Friends

The civil rights era, although it was last century, many of the same issues that were being fought for then, are still being fought for now.   Was recently asked by a friend, if we still need affirmative action because in their minds, institutional racism has gone away. Of course, my friend, has never been stopped by the police because he matched a description or have a whole room pause their discussions when they realize he was the only person of color. There is no way, these are close to what the type of discrimination, people of color faced after the Civil War through the Reagan era.

Even then, discrimination has never really ended, it just became not as obvious and even more insidious, which brings us to today’s climate, where faces of hatred are not hiding anymore. Ava DuVernay’s 13th, which was released a few months ago, highlights this vicious cycle, as the racism, obvious and not obvious, disclosed how this has affected the prison industrial system, and how the justice system is not necessarily formed to work in the name of justice. Cases like those shown in the documentary and recent release of the Central Park Five, shows a system where people of color are in constant danger. In The Silence of Our Friends by Mark Long, Jim Demonakos and Nate Powell, it weaves a tale where justice was this one time, righteous.

It is the summer of 1967 and we meet a white family in Texas, where the trial of Samuel Otis, has gripped the state and has them divided along racial lines. Because of the trial, both KKK and SNCC, have made their presence known. The other family that are our main characters are black, and face a drastically different and uglier life in Texas. Eventually, a peaceful protest turns violent, where a police officer gets killed and five black college students are put on trial for his murder. By book’s end, justice is served but a tragedy has taken a national hero, these two families are stronger than ever, as they are joined by their commonalities and their differences, as they understand at the end of the day, they are human.

Overall, an excellent book, which shows how hate can be overcome by love. The story by Long and Demonakos, is relatable, at time funny, and accurate to history. The art by Powell, is engaging. Altogether, a book that will make you rethink, the word” progress”, as there are some familiar scenes of recent events in this book, as it shows we have truly have not come as far as we think we have.

Review: Goliath of Shenzhen

The difference between first world and third word is astounding in today’s day and time. The fact that we still talk about how certain countries still using 19th century technology and using primitive form of transportation. We also liv in a world where oligarchies still thrive and rules legions of countrymen by fear and disgust. When people live in countries that are about both third world and where an oligarchy rules by hate and violence, is the very reason people flee and becomes refugees elsewhere.

For those who are unable to escape, life becomes a prison, and every day is pure dread. Fiction usually champions those who flee, and rightfully so, as the courage to escape, is absolute bravery. It is those who stay behind, that fiction rarely ever gets to know, as the pain of living a life, like that may be too unbearable for someone to read. In The Goliath of Shenzhen, the readers gets to know a few heroes who have nothing left lose and want nothing more than, liberation.

In the opening pages, we are shown a a village on the outskirts of Shenzhen province in China, called HanX, which was once prosperous but now has become a den of sin and desire.  In this world, state ran police, constantly abuse their power for personal gain and the government decides to move in make this rural community into junkyard, which will wipe the homes of those villagers left behind. Five teenagers decided to ban together, with the help of a wise mentor, to fight the government and the police, by building robots out of old auto parts. By book’s end, our heroes are much stronger and smarter than they think they are, as they square off in a final battle with the military.

Overall, this was a gripping tale, which reminded of a fun and at time, grim crossover between Red Dawn and District 9. The story by Aritra Sarkar is an epic tale which combines the genres of mecha anime and dystopian fiction. The art by Ritwick Roy is gorgeous and vibrant. Altogether, if you enjoy your post-apocalyptic world fiction with one mean robot, then this book is right up your alley.
