Your First Look At HULK #27!

Marvel is pleased to present your first look at Hulk #27! The critically acclaimed creative team of Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman team Red Hulk with Steve Rogers, Thor, and the brilliant Dr. Bruce Banner to put and end to the Intelligencia’s nefarious plans! Except in order to do so, Red Hulk must dive to the depths of the ocean and find an unlikely ally – the King of Atlantis, Namor!

Fans and agree – Hulk is a hit!

“There’s a little Bruce Banner in this issue, a little green Hulk, a little Steve Rogers, some A-Bomb/Rick Jones, Iron Man, and, of course, Red Hulk and General Thunderbolt Ross. Every one of these characters comes to life through Parker’s story.” Doug Zawisza, ComicBookResources.com

“…there’s something very pure about how this particular superhero comic book is being handled. All the parts work together in harmony, and there’s an intangible something that makes it all work, and I’m so glad I got on for the ride.” – Josh Flanagan, iFanboy.com

“Parker and Hardman give you everything you have come to expect from a book called Hulk. The story and characters draw you in, the art is immense and fulfilling and of course there is a lot of smashing!” – Matt McGloin, Cosmicbooknews.com

Can the heaviest hitters of the Marvel Universe put an end to the Leader and M.O.D.O.K.’s “Scorched Earth” plan to destroy the world? Will Namor be able to put aside his differences and team up with Thunderbolt Ross? Find out the answers to these questions and more this November in Hulk #27!

Comics Have Campus Up in Arms

Bookmark and Share

KSDK.com has a story about an uproar over two “satirical” comics printed in Uconn The Daily Campus, a college newspaper that has caused some controversy.  The first comic says “Forget sugar and spice and everything nice. Try crabs, scabs and everything viral. That’s what girls are really made of,” while the second implied that a girl, who was not ready for sex, could be lured into the bedroom with a shiny diamond ring.  As you can imagine this got the Violence Against Women Prevention Project a bit pissed.

The Daily Campus Editor-in-Chief John Kennedy responded to the criticism in a front-page article.

It’s within the First Amendment rights of the authors of the comics to publish whatever they please. The comics section is part of the opinion section of our newspaper, so it doesn’t represent the newspaper’s feelings as a whole.

This incident has lead the newspaper to update it’s policy about what gets printed and the editors, copy editors and artists at The Daily Campus will attend a workshop about violence against women and how to prevent it.  It is our opinion that free speech is free speech and yes both of these are sexist, but truly standing for liberty also means defending speech we may disagree with.

Elect the Legion of Super-Heroes Leader

DC has thrown up a simple website to allow the public to chose and “elect” the next leader of the Legion of Super-Heroes.  Voting ends on November 10.  While I like the concept this is beyond a missed opportunity for DC.  Treating this like a real election, with campaign websites, videos and attack ads (don’t forget deep social media integration) would of gotten buzz for the series from outside of the comic book community and driven free word of mouth advertising you could never pay for.  Another epic online fail from DC.

Heroclix Brightest Day Aquaman

Wizkids has released a preview of the Aquaman figure for it’s upcoming Heroclix release Brightest Day.

Heroclix Brightest Day AquamanFrom the Wizkid’s website:

First off, let’s look at that Trait: The Undead Sea certainly will have your opponent’s thinking twice when you pair Aquaman with other figures with the Atlantis Keyword on your force! The ability to deal 2 Damage in response to one of your figures being K.O.’ed is a great asset, and worked correctly, could be devastating to your opponents’ forces!Aquaman’s bag of tricks doesn’t end there though! As a Transporter, Aquaman also has access to the Move and Attack ability and is able to carry your other figures to where they can do the most good for your force!

Consistent combat values and solid powers make Aquaman an excellent choice for a secondary attacker and support piece (literally! He has Support on his late-dial!), as well as an excellent core for any Atlantis-Keyword-ed team!

And lastly. let’s not overlook that sinister tentacle rising form the Deep! Aquaman’s Tentacle Whip Special Power gives him the benefit of an 8 Range with an unblocked Line of Fire so long as his target occupies water terrain!

Support – The Gathering: An Ongoing Comic Book Anthology

Bookmark and Share

The comic book anthology project The Gathering: An Ongoing Comic Book Anthology is looking for donations through Kickstarter.  The project sees various creators contributing on varied topics and styles.  From the Kickstarter page:

Wired.com: “….The fourteen black-and-white stories in this collection are very short, only two pages long. They’re loosely centered on the idea of hope…The styles of the stories vary widely and so do the concepts, from very realistic settings to superheroes but the compliment each other despite such diverse work…Emboldened by the success of their first volume, they’re already putting together more and are open to submissions for those, in case you have any ambitions similar to the impulse that created this comic in the first place.

Aint it Cool News: “…Though the only tying theme of this anthology book is a love for the comics medium, this book does have a lot going for it…It’s a safe bet you’ll find something that strikes a chord with you on some emotional or intellectual level. There’s a strong independent voice coming from this one. Here’s hoping there’s enough support for more issues of THE GATHERING.”

Gail Simone (Writer of Secret Six and Birds of Prey): “First, there’s no trash in the book. So no worries. And there are LOTS of gems. There’s real potential throughout the book and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some of these people end up doing a lot more comics. I hope they do.
…LOTS of these pieces would not be out of line in a pro book amongst veteran creators.

The Gathering is an ongoing anthology dedicated to giving newly established and up and coming writers and artists an opportunity to have their work published. Our first issue (with a main theme of Hope) received great reviews and we nearly sold out of our small initial print run. The second issue (Despair) is set to come out in November and we also have the next three issues slated for 2011 (Heroes, Horror and Romance).

So far over 50 different creators have contributed or are in the process of contributing stories for The Gathering and we’re hoping to continue publishing (and offer more opportunites) well beyond 2011. The successful financing of the first three installments will allow us to experiment with different formats in the future including continuing story arcs and self contained issues as well as offering up and coming creators an opportunity to have their work featured in future editions

If we reach our goal, the money received will go to help offset printing costs, the creation of promotional materials as well as covering fees for attending trade shows and comic conventions.

Thank you for taking a look at our project. Feel free to check out the blog link to learn more about The Gathering.

The donations will help to pay for printing, promotional materials and promotion at shows.  As far as bang for you buck this one is pretty good and has a modest goal of $1,000.  Here’s what your donation will get you:

  • $10 – This pledge gets you a copy of both Gathering Vol 1 and 2 signed by some of the creators
  • $25 – This pledge gets you copies of the first two issues, and a special thank you in a future issue. Your name in print!
  • $50 – This pledge gets you the same signed book reward, special ‘thank you’, and a character sketch of your choice from one of our artists!
  • $75 – Not only will you get the signed books, see your name in print with a thank you in a future book, and an original sketch of your choice but you or the person of your choice (with their permission) can be written and drawn into a cameo appearance in a future volume

$75 to get a cameo in a book is a steal and you better believe we’re taking advantage.
