Review – Hey Princess

Bookmark and Share

Hey PrincessHey Princess by Mats Jonsson is a coming of age tale we can all relate to.  A small town boy moving to a bigger city and having to figure out how to fit in.  The story is raw, honest, and brutal to most everyone.  The story is a whirlwind of music, pop culture and a lot of European references I don’t get.  It was originally published in Sweden, so that’s understandable.

Hey Princess is a story about moving to the big city and being young, insecure and desperate to feel as hip as everyone else.

Originally published in Sweden, Hey Princess received praise from both critics and readers for its incisive and entertaining account of indie pop-listening young people in the mid-1990s.

Hey Princess takes its place in the proud tradition of self-deprecating, confessional, sex-obsessed and guilt-ridden autobiographical comics, but stakes out a unique identity by virtue of its Nordic setting and biting social criticism. … This seminal book in the thriving Swedish indie comics scene is a graphic novel packaged in the style of a traditional pulp novel. — A 472-Page Graphic Novel packaged in the style of a traditional pulp novel, 4.25″ x 7″, Diamond: FEB10-1094

It’s great to see a writer be so open, even portraying himself warts and all.  It’s a story of a man trying to find love, often times unsuccessfully.  From horrible sex experiences, to horrible relationship experiences, this is the Swedish High Fidelity outside of the record shop.

It’s impressive that throughout all the aggravation, you still come out in the end thinking love is worth it.  There’s humorous moments, and points you’ll get angry at the characters.  This is the humorous side of those sad pathetic moments of life we all experience.

An autobiographical tale that you can relate to and just might make you feel better about your life.

Review – The Playwright

Bookmark and Share

The PlaywrightThere’s comics that exist that you want to hand to people and show what the medium can do.  The Playwright by Eddie Campbell and Daren White is one of those examples.

Artist Eddie Campbell and writer Daren White have teamed up to present a most peculiar love story.

The Playwright rather enjoys a quiet moment in the local park. It is a good place to mentally sort his ideas, and is often frequented by pretty young ladies. He once saw a pigeon defecate onto a businessman’s shoulder. It struck him as absurd that such an event is often considered lucky. Surely the luck lies with passers-by who, statistically, are far less likely to be similarly soiled at that precise moment. Similarly, the Playwright has always derived an almost perverse sense of relief upon receiving news that an old friend has developed prostate cancer. Because statistically, he reasons, such news significantly reduces the chances of himself being similarly afflicted. And to be honest, at his age, his prostate needs all the statistical support he can muster…

The Playwright: a dark comedy about the sex life of a celibate middle-aged man.– A 160-Page Deluxe Full-Color Hardcover Graphic Novel, 9″ x 5 1/2″ (landscape), Diamond: APR10-1089

The Playwright is a sad, somewhat depressing tale, about a schlep of a man who isn’t very good with the women.  A playwright (what a shock), the story really is just vignette’s of his life.  This is a dark comedy in the best sense.  It’s down and slow and plodding but that’s the brutal truth of his life.

The art is fantastic with an almost painted style.  Each page primarily just made up of three panels, it’s the simplest of layouts, but amazingly effective.  There’s no dialogue here, just captions of the playwright’s observations.  That forces the art to drive the story even more.

This is a beautiful read in every way.  From the visuals to the story (something can be sad and beautiful at the same time), this just works in so many ways.  A perfect example of what comics and graphic novels can be.

Review – Guerillas

Bookmark and Share

Guerillas Vol1 CoverIt’s Vietnam and a young man with no direction is shipped off to serve his country.  Guerillas, written and art by Brahm Revel, is an interesting tale of a young private’s experience in the jungles of Vietnam and his encounter with an experimental platoon of simian soldiers.  It’s a trippy look at war.

Private John Francis Clayton is on his first tour of duty in Vietnam, facing death at every turn in the middle of a war he doesn’t understand. Clayton is just trying to stay alive when he encounters an elite platoon of…. simian soldiers?!? This squad of chain-smoking chimps is the most dangerous fighting force in the jungle… but whose side are they on?

This trade paperback collects the first story arc of the series.  It’s definitely an interesting read and for those interested in “war” comics it’s very much worth it.  There’s many layers here and you can take the platoon of chimps who have a nasty smoking habit many ways.  Is Revel talking about the worth of a soldier?  Is this a look at the soldiers role and chain of command?

No matter how deeply you read into it, the series is very entertaining.  The art is fantastic and the black and white works really well.  This is a series I think would be hurt if it were in color.

If you’re looking for something unique, entertaining, and gets you to think, Guerillas is definitely what you’re looking for.

Frightful Frankenstein Friday . . . and a Warning!

Official Press Release

Frightful Frankenstein Friday

. . . and a Warning!

[Frightful Frankenstein Friday image]San Diego, CA (October 20, 2010) – Just in time for Halloween, well over a dozen blogs will unite for a Web-wide event celebrating a new book by Eisner-award winner Craig Yoe, DICK BRIEFER’S FRANKENSTEIN and the character by that name. Prominent bloggers across the Web will be posting vintage Frankenstein comics, both from Yoe‘s book, which collects Briefer‘s top comics, and from the bloggers’ personal collections. Frightful Frankenstein Friday is this Friday, October 22 and links to all the participating blogs will be on The ITCH blog, the blog of the International Team of Comics Historians.

A medical school dropout, Briefer worked with the likes of Will Eisner and Bob Kane in the early days of comics. During his nearly fifteen years of work on Frankenstein, Briefer at different times drew both a grisly, grim, dark version of Frankenstein and a humorous one, which the cartoonist called his “Merry Monster.” Briefer has been compared to Fletcher Hanks, Basil Wolverton, and Boody Rogers. While there are similarities to these artists’ work, Briefer‘s strong, forceful, and often way fun, art is uniquely his. Briefer‘s art has been called genius, but Ren and Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi simply exclaims, “Now here’s some great cartooning!”

The hard-bound, full-color, large-format book DICK BRIEFER’S FRANKENSTEIN is already gathering rave reviews. Rudy Panucci at PopCult gushes, “Lushly illustrated, the work is classic and the presentation is top notch. This is a great way to get into the Halloween spirit!” Read the full review here: http://tinyurl.com/23omxe8

Said Atomik Blast: “I can’t even begin to boast about how thrilled I am about this release. Craig Yoe has out done himself again by presenting us just a gorgeous book of comic wonderment from days past. Dick Briefer’s vision of the iconic monster of Dr. Frankenstein, whether it be the more terrifying version or the extremely relatable humorous (both of them are presented in this volume) version of the monster captivates in so many ways, I can’t even begin to truthfully begin to detail the impact of this work to you. It’s just something you have to hold in your own hands to take in the joy that is masterful work of Dick Briefer. It’s fresh, fun and admirable…it’s my top pick thus far of the year. There’s still two months left, but I’m afraid it’s gonna be a hard publication to beat.”

WARNING: The book did scare one reviewer’s wife. Over at Captain Comics it was written, “This is the latest in Yoe Books’ (an imprint of IDW) wonderful collections edited by Craig Yoe. The packaging itself is very attractive, with a die-cut hole cut in the cover featuring the ‘classic’ monster, allowing the eyes of the ‘funny’ monster to show through. It makes for a creepy effect which I was not allowed to leave sitting out because it upset my wife.”

Yoe is an Eisner-winning, Harvey-nominated writer, cartoonist that Vice magazine called “The Indiana Jones of comics historians.” Yoe can be reached for comments or interviews at yoecomix(at)hotmail(dot)com. Review copies of Yoe! Books can be requested from AnnaMaria White at IDW Publishing, annamaria (at) idwpublishing.com. A confidential preview of the entire Felix book can be seen at http://yoebooks.com/felix/.

DICK BRIEFER’S FRANKENSTEIN ($21.99, 144 pages, hardcover) is now available in stores. ISBN 978-1600107221.
