Flashback Friday Review: The Incredible Hulk #404

incredible_hulk_vol_1_404Another dollar bin find a couple of weeks ago, I picked up this comic purely because of the cover. I’ve always been partial to the Juggernaut, so the thought of seeing him with the Hulk smashing some stuff around seemed too good to pass up for the lowly price of $1 (for those curious, the cover price was $1.25 when it was released in April 1993).

Written by Peter David, with pencils by Gary Frank, and inks by Cam Smith and colours by Glynis OliverThe Incredible Hulk #404 was a great read for the price I paid for it. The story picks up with the Hulk seemingly under some form of mind control as he attacks the Avengers (most of whom I don’t recognize) at the Juggernaut’s behest.

The issue takes place at some point in the middle of an arc, which meant that while I had no idea how or why things had evolved to the point they were at, but the nature of the comic – and the fight with – meant that I could enjoy it all the same. There’s also a subplot with Betty Banner, Doc Samson and (I presume) Rick Jones, but it didn’t really make a whole lot of sense to me – probably because I haven’t read any of the previous issues.

Artistically, I was a fan. This sort of style is how I remembered comics being when I fist started getting into them (ironic seeing as how it’s from the same era, eh?), so there was a nice throwback for me personally there, but your mileage may vary.

Overall, this issue hasn’t aged too badly; it probably wasn’t a great story when it was initially released, and while it still isn’t great, it was enjoyable.

Marvel Takes First, While DC Dominates the Top Ten for Diamond in January

dollar-shareMarvel saw success with their 50 State variant cover program for U.S.Avengers #1 as it was January’s best-selling comic book according to information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

Comics and graphic novels and toys were all down compared to December 2016, but comics were up compared to January 2016. Due to comics’ improvement total comics/graphic novels for January 2017 was up compared to January 2016, though unit dollars were down.

Marvel Comics was January’s top publisher with a 37.09% dollar share and a 42.62% unit share. That had the publisher making slight gains in each. Dollar share was up 0.36 points and unit share was up 2.12 points. That had to come from somewhere and it looks like DC was partially it. DC Entertainment was the month’s number two publisher with a 28.93% dollar share and a 31.33% unit share. That’s down 0.54 points in dollar share but the company was up 2.29 points in unit share. This is the simple fact DC in January was still running their $2.99 program. At number three was Image Comics with a 9.82% dollar share and a 9.36% unit share. The publisher was 1.01 points up in dollar share and 1.66 in unit share. IDW Publishing was fourth with a 5.25% dollar share (down 0.24 points) and a 3.45% unit share (down 0.65 points), followed by Dark Horse Comics with a 4.04% dollar share (up 0.87 points) and a 2.91% unit share (up 0.48 points).

unit-shareMarvel Comics had three titles in the top ten. Their best performing comic was the previously mentioned U.S.Avengers #1 which was the top comic of the month. DC Entertainment had six titles among the top ten, led by Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Batman #14 at #2, followed by King and Gerads’ Batman #15 at #3. DC’s co-publication with BOOM! Studios, Tom Taylor and Stephen Byrne’s Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #1, was #4. Rounding out the top ten, Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead #162 ranked #5. Among the premier publishers, IDW Publishing’s top book was Batman/TMNT Adventures #3, a co-publication with DC Entertainment, at #99. Finally, Dark Horse Comics’ Serenity: No Power in the ‘Verse #4, based on Joss Whedon’s film Serenity, was their top book of the month at #133.

Tom King and Jason Fabok’s Batman Volume 1: I Am Gotham from DC Entertainment was January’s best-selling graphic novel. DC Entertainment had five titles among the top ten, all from DC Rebirth. Image Comics had four titles in the top ten — Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ Kill or Be Killed Volume 1 ranked #2. Finally, Marjorie M. Liu and Mark Brooks’ Star Wars: Han Solo from Marvel Comics ranked #8.

Lisa Yee’s DC Super Hero Girls: Batgirl at Super Hero High, a young readers novel based on DC Entertainment’s Super Hero Girls franchise published by Random House Books for Young Readers, was January’s best-selling book.

Diamond Select Toys’ Marvel Select: Doctor Strange Movie Action Figure, recreating Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the Sorcerer Supreme, was January’s best-selling toy product. In total, Diamond Select had four products in the top ten, including the Marvel Gallery: Spider-Man PVC Figure at #5, the Marvel Select: Cable Action Figure at #7, and the Ghostbusters Select Series 4 Action Figures at #10.

4D Cityscape’s Batman: Gotham City Puzzle, a 3-dimensional puzzle of Batman’s base of operations, was January’s best-selling game product and one of the manufacturer’s four products among the top ten. IDW Publishing’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past Board Game ranked #6 for the month, and their Machi Koro: Bright Lights Big City Board Game ranked #9.

Review: Spell on Wheels #5

30269

The witches head out to recover the last of their magical possessions, but they soon discover they’re in a fight for their lives and the bad guy is not who they expected!

Spell on Wheels concludes on a high note, which, given all the characters have had to go through to get their stuff, is nice to see. Writer Kate Leth keeps it really entertaining with some interesting developments before everything concludes. That includes a metaphysical resurrection of someone else from the witches’ past. Given what the spirit wanted to do, it does make one wonder if there is a second volume to come.

The tarot card style inspired cover is a fitting one for the last issue. It manages to give a hint at a few things without revealing what is going to happen inside. Like the previous issues of this series, the art by Megan Levens is clean and well-defined. Levens manages to keep the magical elements realistic and eye-catching at the same time.
