SDCC 2025: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel Return to comics from Kelly Thompson and Dynamite

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and companion series Angel mark their hotly anticipated return to comic stories from Dynamite Entertainment and Disney’s 20th Television, ushering in a groundbreaking new era of the mythos.
Eisner Award-winning Kelly Thompson will be taking on the comic book franchise, as the master architect and writer for both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. The two series are set to interconnect and complement each other closely, for an epic introduction to the characters and franchise for new audiences as well as long-time readers.

Buffy and Angel are two of her most ambitious projects to date, after over a decade of fan-favorite and critically acclaimed work including Absolute Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, Captain Marvel, Black Widow, It’s Jeff, Hawkeye, Rogue & Gambit, and Deadpool — as well as stories based on cherished properties like Jem and the HologramsG.I. Joe’s Scarlett, and Star Wars. Superstar cover artist David Nakayama will be contributing to both titles.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series ran from 1997-2003 and featured titular hero Buffy inheriting the “Slayer” mantle as a high school student, and with the help of trusted friends together they fight the forces of evil in Sunnydale, a beautiful California town set inconveniently on a Hellmouth, a gateway to Hell itself. Buffy’s first love, Angel, a vampire cursed with a soul, eventually sets out on his own to continue his journey of redemption, becoming a star in his own right — in both television and comics — as a supernatural detective in Los Angeles.

Further details on the full interior creative team, exciting variant covers, and release schedules will be forthcoming soon.

MegaKat City Has Fallen in the First-Ever Swat Kats Comic

It’s been over three decades since Swat Kats first launched missiles (and hearts) across television screens worldwide. Now, the cult-favorite cartoon is back—and it’s getting its very first comic book series. On the project, co-writer Frank J. Barbiere teams up with Kevin Roditeli, the founder of Roditeli Productions and former co-founder of Massive Publishing. And fresh off his Golden Issue Award-winning run on Transformers, the series also marks the return of acclaimed artist Jorge Corona.

Joining the team is veteran editor Joseph P. Illidge, whose work at DC Comics on Batman and Milestone helped shape modern superhero storytelling. The upcoming comic will debut on Kickstarter this fall with exclusive content and surprises for fans old and new.

Created by Christian and Yvon TremblaySwat Kats originally aired in 1993, produced by the legendary Hanna-Barbera. The show has been broadcast in over 76 countries and remains one of the most iconic cartoons of the ’90s, thanks to its slick jet-fueled action, gritty art style, and cult fan following.

Titled MegaKat City Has Fallen, the story picks up with the city in ruins and the Radical Squadron facing their greatest threat yet. It’s the launch point for a bold new era of Swat Kats, with more stories planned across multiple mediums.

More contributors and variant covers will be revealed leading up to the Kickstarter launch, which is expected to feature exclusive editions, collectibles, and fan-first bonuses.

This fall, MegaKat City returns—louder, sharper, and more radical than ever. To learn more, check out the Kickstarter for Swat Kats, launching on Kickstarter in Fall 2025.

Don’t Be Driven Mad By The Shadow Out of Time

Dark Horse Manga continues the English translations of masterful manga artist Gou Tanabe! Winner of the 2025 Bram Stoker Award from the Horror Writers of America, Tanabe’s adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft have also been nominated for the Eisner, Harvey, and American Manga Awards. His latest work to appear from Dark Horse, H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time, is adapted into English by Zack Davisson, translator of the two-time Eisner Award-winning Showa: A History of Japan by Shigeru Mizuki, and lettered by the Eisner-nominated Steve Dutro. This next terrifying tale will arrive just in time for Halloween 2025.

Nathaniel Wingate Peaslee was once a respectable professor of political economy. Though he taught at Miskatonic University in Arkham, his temper was of a reasonable sort, not at all interested in the occult. That has changed. In 1908, standing in the lecture hall, Professor Peaslee saw his classroom suddenly twist into an uncanny, alien vista, and he collapsed unconscious.

What awoke was not the Nathaniel Peaslee his colleagues knew—at least, not his mind. Now associating with strange people, and speaking oddly of time, distant lands, and concepts of existence, his travels and research disturbed those who knew him, including his friends, wife and even children. It was not until 1913 that Professor Peaslee came back to his right mind, with no memory of his strange sabbatical. His search for understanding of those five missing years leads him—and readers—on a journey across the globe to a place where a long-vanished race still casts their shadow out of time.

Are you out of your mind? Don’t miss H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Out of Time when the 370-page (5.125” x 7.25”) tankobon-sized paperback arrives in bookstores on October 28, 2025 and comic shops on October 29, 2025, for $21.99. Pre-order now from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or your local bookstore or comic shop.

Godzilla #1 has rich world-building, explosive action, and makes us want to experience more of the universe

Godzilla #1

In Godzilla #1, Tim Seeley, Nicola Cizmesija, and Francesco Segala craft an entire universe centered around kaiju and the energy they emit, namely, kai-sei. There are familiar elements from the Godzilla mythos like his emergence in 1954, a hilarious take on Jet Jaguar, and of course, some monsters to fight, punch, and interact them, but Seeley and Cizmesija mix them all together in a way that sustains an ongoing comic book series (With two spinoffs!) instead of just a one-shot or series of miniseries. This first issue introduces our protagonist Jacen Braid, the newest recruit of G-Force, who has big “fight and kill God” energy and a boatload of trauma. There’s definitely some big monster action, but most of what I liked about Godzilla #1 was the interactions between the different G-Force members and their distinct philosophies in handling kaiju.

Godzilla #1 hits the sweet spot between shonen manga and superhero team comics. There’s a true explosiveness to Nicola Cizemesija and Francesco Segala’s visuals, especially the conflicts that center around kai-sei. Speed lines crackle, facial expressions get more dramatic, and special effects lettering from Nathan Widick takes front and center when G-Force goes to war or just spars against one another. Seeley uses the extra length of the issue to build a rapport between the team and drop hints at this brave new world before introducing the series’ hook. Braid is definitely angsty, but he kicks ass. Also, his past trauma makes him easy to empathize with like in a small, touching sequence with his roommate. Finally, he has what I think the kids call “main character energy” as in he’s not a faceless soldier or scientist, but an actual foil for the kaiju.

Godzilla #1 has rich world-building, explosive action, and makes me want to experience more of the universe that IDW is creating featuring the King of Monsters and his monstrous and human friends and enemies.
