First 2011 Convention in Arizona, Will a Protest Follow?

Bookmark and Share

The well known California comic dealer Jimmy Jay has announced  the first comic book convention of 2011, scheduled for January 8 and 9 in Mesda, Arizona.  Guests so far include Rob Liefeld, Jeph Loeb, Robert Kirkman, Jon Layman, Mike Choi, Sonia Oback, Cory Walker and  Ryan Otterly.

Arizona is at the center of a firestorm over a recent piece of legislation that requires police to determine the immigration status of anyone they stop and suspect is in the country illegally. It also makes it a state crime to lack proper immigration papers.  The legislation has already been modified since it was signed into legislation.  The law now requires scrutiny only of people who police stop, detain or arrest. They also changed a section of the bill that barred officers from “solely” using race as grounds for suspecting someone is in the country illegally

Some have called this law racist and is nothing but racial profiling.  Opponents feel the changes made won’t make any difference and have filed at least three federal lawsuits, with more to follow.  The legislation has led to numerous protests and calls for boycotts of the state.

Crime has been cited as a reason for the legislation, but crime is actually down along the border, negating this argument.  Some police enforcement have stated that the legislation will lead to more crime as immigrants will be afraid to report crime committed against them or be less willing to cooperate.

The Justice Department has drafted a legal challenge to the law citing that it impinges on the Federal Government’s authority to police the national borders.  L.A. County officials have called for a boycott.

Will this controversy come to the comics industry with calls for industry talent and companies to not attend and boycott?

We’ve reached out to the convention for an interview and comment and will update this article when and if one is received.

Review – Jonah Hex: No Way Back

Bookmark and Share

Jonah Hex No Way BackJonah Hex isn’t the most well known DC character and property.  On June 18, Warner Bros. will be releasing a major motion picture based on the property starring Josh Brolin as Hex.  Just in time for the release of the movie the first original Jonah Hex graphic novel, Jonah Hex: No Way Back, is being released on June 2.

The graphic novel focuses on Hex’s rough family life and how he it transformed him into the vigilante he is.  Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti, it features artwork from Tony DeZuniga.

Ride along with Hex as he comes to terms with the death of a loved one, long thought lost, battles El Papagayo and his gang of bandits and tries to make peace with his own frightening past to save his present.

The series is a great western tale of revenge and family that hearkens back to the western movie classics starring John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.  The idea is pretty basic, a family member is used to get Hex out into the open and along the way he meets the half brother he never knew.

Rarely is the presentation of the material discussed in reviews, but this graphic novel stands out enough to merit mention.  Whoever decided on the packaging deserves credit.  Instead of the usual flimsy cover or generic thick board, the front and back cover look like a warn journal that might of been found during the time.  It mimics worn leather with burnt in lettering.  The center features what looks like a photo from the time period that looks sunk into the cover.  I’ve seen journals that look exactly like this and the level of detail is great, down to the fake worn edges.  Top notch presentation.

The tale is entertaining and perfect for people knew to the character.  If you like westerns this is right up your ally.  Check out the full review below.

Hal Jordan for Congress

Bookmark and Share

Hal Jordan is better known to comic fans by his alter ego, Green Lantern.  But did you know when he’s not saving the universe he’s also running for Congress?  Jordan is a Conservative running in the 8th Congressional District in North Carolina.  According to his website:

Hal Jordan is a conservative businessman, family man and political leader who will fight for North Carolina’s conservative values in the Halls of Congress. Hal is pro-life, a member of the NRA and a supporter of traditional marriage between one man and one woman. Hal is running for Congress to help create more good jobs and stop Washington’s out of control tax and spend agenda.

Going by the above here’s the chances of seeing the real life Jordan wielding rings of the various Corps.

Black Lantern – The man is pro life, kind of hard to wield the ring that’s tied so closely to death.

Red Lantern – There’s a possibility Jordan would sling this ring, especially while we’re sure he’s raging against the gays and Washington DC.

Orange Lantern – He doesn’t like DC’s spending of money.  Sounds like an Orange Lantern to me!  Mine!  Mine!  Mine!

Yellow Lantern – He is running on a platform of fear…. hmmm.

Green Lantern – You’ve got to have a lot of will power to work in political campaigns, let alone run for office.

Blue Lantern – While I’m sure he hopes he wins, there’s a passion that doesn’t quite fit with that platform.

Star Sapphire – No love for the gays.  Don’t think he’ll be sporting this ring.

Indigo Tribe – The teleporting ability that comes with this ring would really help on the campaign trail, but I don’t see him fitting in with this hippie tribe.

White Lantern – He is pro life isn’t he?

Democrat Rep. Larry Kissell currently holds the seat.  He won in 2008 with 55% of the vote.
