Review: Molly Danger Book One

Molly DangerMolly Danger is the story of the world’s most powerful ten-year-old girl. A seemingly immortal, superstrong hero, Molly has protected the city of Coopersville for the last twenty years. Kept in constant isolation and watched closely by D.A.R.T. (The Danger Action Response Team), an organization created to assist in her heroic deeds and monitor her movements, Molly battles the Supermechs. Molly longs for a real life with a real family. Her life changes when D.A.R.T. recruits a new pilot, Austin Briggs. Briggs has his own motivations for joining the team; newly remarried, Austin is having trouble forming a relationship with his new stepson, Brian. Austin wants to use his connections to impress Brian, an avid Molly Danger fan. However, things change when Molly and Brian form a friendship of their own. She believes she’s an alien whose family died when their ship crash-landed on Earth and before the atmosphere could fully alter them. She also believes that she’s alone, the last of her kind. Everything she believes is wrong.

Molly Danger: Book One: Mighty is the beginning of a fantastic all ages series that features a strong female protagonist and a story that’s fun for both kids and adults. When I first saw this series posted to Kickstarter by creator Jamal Igle, it took me all of a few seconds to pledge to support it. Not only did the initial art shown look great, by Igle’s pitch was exactly the type of comic we should be seeing more of.

Having read it, I can say the comic has it all and sets up what I fully expect to be a fantastic franchise. The comic nails it in the excitement and fun, but still in the center of it all is heart. And that’s part of what’s so much fun and what’s solid about the comic. It’s a comic and story about family that you can share with yours without shame or worry. For as much action there is, there’s equal amounts of quiet moments where Molly isn’t a super hero, but just an ordinary girl. The comic excites and pulls at your heart-strings.

While the  main character is a girl, the comic is perfect for boys and girls with action and excitement that appeals to all. The character and first volume is so much fun I can’t recommend it enough. it’s an absolute must buy, and then share it after you’re done reading it.

NYCC 2013: Wailing Blade Howls from Douek, Cody, and ComixTribe

On the second day of the 2013 New York Comic Con independent comic book publisher, ComixTribe, announced Wailing Blade: Headtaker, the second of four new titles to be released in 2014 revealed at the convention.

Wailing Blade: Headtaker, a new mini-series written by Richard Douek and lushly illustrated by Charlie Cody, will explore earth’s distant future in which the shattered remnants of an empire that once spanned galaxies lurch their way toward civilization once more. In this strange new world of lost technology, strange creatures and desperate men, the one constant is death. In the shadow of the the great city of Mintum, death has a face, and he has a blade.

Wailing Blade is the story of the Headtaker, a merciless executioner in the employ of the Tyrant of Mintum. With the capture of Autroch, a rebel and bandit lord, one stroke of the Headtaker’s sword will cement the Tyrant’s rule over the entire region. All it will take is a short journey to the border town of Ordz to carry out Autroch’s sentence, but a lot can happen on the road.

Douek explains, “Wailing Blade takes place in the far, far future, where civilization has risen and fallen a hundred times over. What little technology that survived the millennia is very rare, even less understood. The executioner’s mask and weapon are artifacts of an earlier time, when man had greater mastery over technology. There are few who understand its true purpose, least of all our hero, Tychon.”

Lending his talent to the series is artist Charlie Cody. Cody is excited about the project, “I feel like a kid in a candy store,” he said, “the Wailing Blade mythology is certifiably BADASS!”

For Douek, writing this series is a chance to pay tribute to one of his heroes, and create something new for the comic book audience. “I’ve been a huge Jack Vance fan since I first read his Dying Earth stories in high school. When I heard of his passing, earlier this year, I wanted to create something of an homage to him, and the enjoyment his stories have brought me over the years. It’s my sincere hope that people will enjoy the story, and are motivated to check out some of the stories that inspired it – Jack Vance was one of the great writers of science fiction, and his work deserves to be read widely,” Douek said about the inspiration for Wailing Blade.

Douek says that he first conceptualized this new imagining of earth, which lead naturally to the story of Wailing Blade“I looked at Dying Earth as a source of inspiration, a future Earth so far-flung, so far removed from the present, that it seems like an alien world itself. I thought about what kind of people and societies might populate this strange place, and built the story up from there,” he said.

Wailing Blade: Headtaker will be a new mini-series debuting in 2014.

NYCC 2013: Cuddlers – A Zombie Tale with a Feline Twist Coming From ComixTribe

On the opening day of the 2013 New York Comic Con independent comic book publisher, ComixTribe, announced Cuddlers, the first of four new titles to be released in 2014 revealed at the convention.

Cuddlers, is a new series written by Yannick Morin and illustrated by Alex Cormack. When his hometown is struck by a mysterious disease that transforms its victims into cat-obsessed “cuddlers”, a young rebel teams up with a cast of unlikely allies to stop the plague before it spreads all over 1950s America. Combining what the Internet told us you already love – cats and zombies – this coming-of-age horror comedy will force you to laugh and scream throughout its three malodorous issues.

“Everyone thinks they have a new spin on the zombie genre. I usually laugh at them, and go back to reading Kirkman’s book ,” said ComixTribe publisher Tyler James. “But what Yannick and Alex are cooking up here actually is that brilliant, original twist, backed by crazy but true science… this book will knock readers for a loop.”

Where does an idea like this come from? According to Cuddlers writer, Yannick Morin, the answer is wasting time on the internet.

“One day, I was browsing the web instead of working on a column, and I came across this article about Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite that’s found in cat droppings and that makes rats unafraid of their natural enemy. It actually makes them seek out cats to get eaten by them, and thus perpetuate the parasite’s lifecycle in a new kitty digestive tract. When humans get infected however, they just get sick. That’s pretty boring really, so I thought: “Hey, why not have the humans go cat-crazy as well?”

“After collaborating on “Nearly Perfect” for the Oxymoron anthology, Yannick and I wanted to work together again on a new project,” said series artist Alex Cormack. “I thought another horror story would be great, but my wife suggested we do a romantic comedy. So Yannick and I decided to put the two together and throw in a bunch of cats.”

For long-time comic editor Morin, writing Cuddlers has been a significant undertaking. “Every time I sit down to work on this thing, I’m haunted by all of the criticism I’ve formulated about other people’s writing, either as an editor or simply as a reader. As I damn should be. We should all be held accountable of the feedback we give others. Cuddlers is a labor of love, yes, but it’s also me putting my money where my mouth is when it comes to storytelling,” he said of working on the series.

Cuddlers will be a three-issue mini-series, debuting in mid-2014.

NYCC 2013: Dynamite Nabs Gold Key’s Solar, Magnus, Turok and Doctor Spektor

Dynamite Entertainment has announced the return of four fan-favorite comic series — Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Solar: Man of the Atom, Magnus: Robot Fighter, and Doctor Spektor — through a new licensing agreement with DreamWorks Classics.  The publishing company has signed four of today’s most sought-after writers: Greg Pak on Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Frank Barbiere on Solar: Man of the Atom, Fred Van Lente on Magnus: Robot Fighter, and Mark Waid on the long-lost hero Doctor Spektor.  Contributing artists will include Mirko Colak, Cory Smith, and more to be announced.  Dynamite will launch the bold new universe of name-brand titles beginning in February 2014.

Originally published throughout the 1950s and 1960s as part of the Gold Key Comics imprint and followed by the monumentally successful run from Valiant Comics in the early 1990s, the titles Turok, Solar, and Magnus: Robot Fighter are immediately recognizable to the modern comic-reading audience.  Doktor Spektor, a title launched in the 1970s, rejoins its contemporaries for the first time in decades as part of Dynamite’s reimagined line.

Each contributing writer has shared their thoughts on the bold initiative:

Greg Pak, whose innovating writing style has propelled Batman/Superman to the top of sales charts, says, “When Nate Cosby told me the character he had in mind for me, I couldn’t stop grinning.  The original Turok, Son of Stone series featured a Native American warrior fighting for survival in a lost valley populated by dinosaurs.  I’m just going to go on the record and say that every single element in that description is solid gold.  I want to write stories with a Native American hero.  I want to write stories about fighting for survival. And you bet your boots I want to write stories about a world populated by dinosaurs.  And now you’re telling me I get to do all three?  For sheer thrills and adventure, this book is going to be a blast to work on.  And I’m always drawn to stories that feature diverse casts, so I love that a Native American hero headlines the book.  I’m also loving the worldbuilding we’re doing. We’re exploring the reasons why dinosaurs walk the earth and all of the social, historical, ecological, and political ramifications that follow.  This is huge adventure combined with mind-bending alternate history, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Fred Van Lente, a New York Times bestselling author and fan-favorite writer of Marvel Zombies, says, “I’m thrilled and honored to be reviving such a beloved series.  I loved the original Russ Manning book as a kid, and am looking forward to bringing science fiction action to the new series in a thought-provoking way.  The very nature of robotics questions what it means to be human — that’s ultimately what Magnus: Robot Fighter will be about.  That, and punching robots until they explode.  There will be a lot that old-time fans will find familiar, but the science of robotics and cybernetics has advanced considerably even since the last time Magnus had a title, and you’ll be seeing a lot of those reflected here.”

Frank Barbiere, a rising star whose work includes Blackout and Five Ghosts, says, “Dynamite has lined up some of the top talent in the business for the new universe of books, and I am both excited and flattered to be part of it.  I think fans are going to be thrilled by the new directions we’re taking with many of the properties, Solar included.  I’m a huge fan of the character and will be putting a unique spin on the mythology with an emphasis on family and character.  I’m hoping my take will resonate strongly across the readership, new and old alike, and I’ll certainly be bringing a lot of new and exciting things to the table.”

Mark Waid, one of the most celebrated comic writers of the modern era thanks to bestselling titles like Kingdom Come, Daredevil, Amazing Spider-Man, and Indestructible Hulk, says, “Launching a publishing event like this is an exciting opportunity to show how it can be done well, stylishly, and cohesively. The key (no pun intended), as far as I’m concerned, is to get to the core of these characters so we can, with dynamism and confidence, tell the readers who they are, what they want, and why fans will invest in that. For Doctor Spektor, the challenge comes in figuring out how a professional skeptic, a famous investigator who debunks and exposes the extra-normal and keeps himself grounded, can function in a world that suddenly hosts superheroes and supervillains. What do you choose to believe in when your lifelong belief system is swept away?”

The new line of titles will be release beginning in February 2014.  The entire line will also be available for purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

God Hates Astronauts, Vol. 1 TP

GOD HATES ASTRONAUTS follows the story of a group of incompetent, small-minded, super powered narcissists called “The Power Persons Five” who are hired by NASA to stop all farmers from launching themselves into space in homemade rocket ships. Unfortunately for NASA, this goal is scarcely even addressed and the book focuses more on extramarital affairs, bank-robbing owls, big gross swollen heads, ghost cow heads, olde tyme boxers, tigers eating cheeseburgers in the Crab Nebula, buffalo judges and tons of aggressive swearing. Not so much a superhero book as it is a parody of basically everything and a celebration of weird that is jam-packed with references to RoboCop and Die Hard.

“I don’t want to oversell what Ryan has accomplished here, but I gave God Hates Astronauts to a blind man and he regained his sight.” – Jonathan Hickman (EAST OF WEST, The Manhattan Projects, The Avengers)
