Event Horizon: Inferno #3 Answers a Lot of Questions as it Continues its Action Focus

Event Horizon: Inferno #3

Two hundred years have passed since anyone boarded the Event Horizon. Built to advance the human race beyond the known limits of space, the vessel is now a microcosm of Hell. Those trapped there have been experiencing their deaths over and over for two centuries. And you’re about to discover…Hell is a loop to be experienced again and again. Event Horizon: Inferno #3 focuses on the relationship between Starck and the Event Horizon as we learn of the horrors she has endured.

Event Horizon: Inferno #3 continues an intriguing pivot of the series. The film, as well as its prequel series, were squarely in the horror genre with visuals meant to cause unease and scare readers. Event Horizon: Inferno is the Aliens to those other’s Alien. It feels more action oriented forgoing the usual scares and instead delivering a survival narrative as a group must figure out how to escape the ship to safety. This isn’t a bad thing, it delivers something new and different for the series instead of its twisted un-funhouse of hell and horrors.

Written by Christian Ward, Event Horizon: Inferno #3 focuses on Starck and Cooper (mostly) as they endure a Groundhog Day of terror as the Event Horizon attempts to mine the two for the fuel it needs to function. It answers some questions for fans of the property and gives us a Starck that’s battle-tested and ready to break the cycle of terror.

The comic isn’t all roses and bees. Rob Carey‘s art continues with the unease we expect from the property and series. With color by Xenon Honchar and lettering by Alex Ray, Starck and her new found allies must deal with monsters and demons… there’s blood, gore, and a body count. While the comic feels more action oriented, the visuals still leave you enough to remind you this is a ship of hell we’re dealing with. But, overall, it feels a bit dialed back from previous outings.

Event Horizon: Inferno #3 fills in some gaps while it sets up the battle to come as the victims begin to fight their way to safety off the ship. Where it all goes should be interesting and we’re expecting far more twists and turns before it’s over but so far, Event Horizon: Inferno is a worthy sequel.
