Event Horizon: Inferno #3 Answers a Lot of Questions as it Continues its Action Focus

Event Horizon: Inferno #3

Two hundred years have passed since anyone boarded the Event Horizon. Built to advance the human race beyond the known limits of space, the vessel is now a microcosm of Hell. Those trapped there have been experiencing their deaths over and over for two centuries. And you’re about to discover…Hell is a loop to be experienced again and again. Event Horizon: Inferno #3 focuses on the relationship between Starck and the Event Horizon as we learn of the horrors she has endured.

Event Horizon: Inferno #3 continues an intriguing pivot of the series. The film, as well as its prequel series, were squarely in the horror genre with visuals meant to cause unease and scare readers. Event Horizon: Inferno is the Aliens to those other’s Alien. It feels more action oriented forgoing the usual scares and instead delivering a survival narrative as a group must figure out how to escape the ship to safety. This isn’t a bad thing, it delivers something new and different for the series instead of its twisted un-funhouse of hell and horrors.

Written by Christian Ward, Event Horizon: Inferno #3 focuses on Starck and Cooper (mostly) as they endure a Groundhog Day of terror as the Event Horizon attempts to mine the two for the fuel it needs to function. It answers some questions for fans of the property and gives us a Starck that’s battle-tested and ready to break the cycle of terror.

The comic isn’t all roses and bees. Rob Carey‘s art continues with the unease we expect from the property and series. With color by Xenon Honchar and lettering by Alex Ray, Starck and her new found allies must deal with monsters and demons… there’s blood, gore, and a body count. While the comic feels more action oriented, the visuals still leave you enough to remind you this is a ship of hell we’re dealing with. But, overall, it feels a bit dialed back from previous outings.

Event Horizon: Inferno #3 fills in some gaps while it sets up the battle to come as the victims begin to fight their way to safety off the ship. Where it all goes should be interesting and we’re expecting far more twists and turns before it’s over but so far, Event Horizon: Inferno is a worthy sequel.

Smile and A Quiet Place Expand their Terrifying Worlds With IDW Dark

From the big screen into the pages of comics, IDW Dark presents spine-chilling new chapters inspired by the hit Paramount Pictures horror franchises Smile and A Quiet Place.

Scaring comic shops this September is Any Given Smile, a frightening five-issue story crafted by Eisner Award-nominated writer Stephanie Williams, GLAAD Media Award-winning artist Pablo Collar, and featuring colors by Triona Farrell and letters by Ariana Maher.

The year is 1995 and all eyes are on the American Arena League football championship game. The Sharks gear up for the most significant event in the AAL’s 20-year history, and their sudden-star backup quarterback is feeling the pressure from his teammates, his fans, and his debts to the city’s gambling underworld. A string of suicides hits the community hard, drawing a suspicious sports journalist deeper into that world to examine their connection to the big game.  No one can trust anything or anyone as a mind-bending and mysterious Smile Entity and its horrifying visions threaten their payouts, their sanity, and their lives…

Shhhhh. Don’t make a sound this November when A Quiet Place: Rising Tides crawls into comic shops. The tense and captivating five-issue thriller is created by the acclaimed duo of writer Declan Shalvey and artist Luke Sparrow, featuring colorist Colin Craker and letterer Jodie Troutman.

When a young woman named Grace tracked down her estranged father to a run-down houseboat in the Florida Keys, she expected disappointment, resentment, maybe even closure. Instead, the entire world ended.

Now stranded in the aftermath of the invasion that shattered civilization, she and her sick, aging father cling to survival on the open water – the only space safe from the creatures who attack at the sound of a single breath. But his oxygen is running low, supplies are disappearing quickly, and the deadly predators circling the shoreline are learning fast. And on the horizon, a hurricane is coming.

Event Horizon: Inferno #2 Fleshes Out Some History While Giving an Aliens/Terminator Vibe

Event Horizon: Inferno #2

Two centuries ago, after vanishing for seven years, the starship Event Horizon reappeared near Neptune. Possessed by a demonic entity, the ship murdered most of its rescue crew before it was blown in two. One half fell into a portal to Hell and the other stayed in our solar system. Today, a billionaire, Daniel Durante, leads a crew of private space marines to the wreckage of the Event Horizon to investigate the ship. Durante is dead set on bringing his brother back from the afterlife and the means to do it lies aboard the Event Horizon! But his crew may have something to say about that… Event Horizon: Inferno #2 delivers more of Durante’s insanity while focusing on his ex-wife Skylar.

If Event Horizon the movie is Alien, Event Horizon: Inferno #2 is its Aliens. Witten by Christian Ward, this sequel to the cult-horror film takes us back to the plagued ship with a different motivation than just discovering what happened. Much like Aliens, some members are privy to far more information than provided to the military grunts and just like Aliens, it’ll take a strong, kick-ass woman to save the day.

Event Horizon: Inferno #2 focuses on Durante’s ex-wife Skylar who has been put in stasis due to Druante’s lies about her health. In reality, she’s the sacrifice/trauma engine needed to fuel the starship Event Horizon and allow it to awaken for Druante’s true mission, connecting with his dead brother.

Unlike the film and the prequel comic, there’s people who know what’s occurring in Event Horizon: Inferno and some who are counting on its demonic connections to help them in their mission. It turns the premise into survival horror, much like Aliens with Lieutenant Starck, the last surviving member of the Lewis & Clark, taking on the role of Ripley. This isn’t a bad thing at all and helps deliver something new to the franchise.

Rob Carey‘s art has a nice tense, and dark horror vibe to it. With color by Xenon Honchar and lettering by Alex Ray, the comic features a cold sci-fi look. Like the world of Alien, the tech is futuristic, but also feels grounded and not distracting. There’s a worn feel to everything and Carey and the team also keep things rather simple, in a survival horror sort of way with an axe playing a focus of major drama.

Event Horizon: Inferno #2 is a solid second issue that fleshes out the characters providing more details about the lead up to the mission and horror to come. Unlike the film and prequel comic, it doesn’t go for the imagery to make you squirm, though I’m sure that’s coming. It helps the sequel into a direction and territory that feels fresh and something new beyond just scares.
