Behemoth #2 is a wild ride of a disaster story

Behemoth #2

Tensions run high on the bus inside the Behemoth. Detective Jack does his best to keep the passengers from turning on one another, while food-truck-chef Sara does what she can to help her gravely injured friend Manny. An ambulance provides hope for medical supplies and radio contact with the outside world, but they’ll have to traverse a lake of acid in order to get to it. Behemoth #2 is a wild ride as our survivors are stuck in a bus in the stomach of a kaiju.

Written by Grant Sputore and Ryan Engle, Behemoth #2 continues the fun concept of the debut issue. The series is turn off your brain and enjoy the ride type of fun that involves pools of acid, strange creatures, and tense sequences. This is a comic that’s just silly entertainment in a good way.

Sputore and Engle seem to be having fun with their concept. The situations are grand but focused and the characters are wild exaggerations, each filling a niche. The comic and story aren’t breaking ground, but is using what works so well is this sort of disaster/survivor tale.

The art by Jay Martin is solid. With color by Martin and lettering by Frank Cvetkovic, the art does an excellent job of delivering the sense of scale. The survivors are in the belly of the beast which is massive. Martin focuses on the emptiness in a way and space that makes each step a hurdle and process to cross. The visuals make it feel like it’d both be an impossible task to climb out to safety while also teasing that escape is right there. There’s something that’s interesting that the comic’s visuals make everything “within reach” while also emphasizing how much things aren’t.

Behemoth #2 is a solid second issue that’s having fun with its concept and delivering a wild ride of a story. This isn’t a deep tale but one you’d appreciate watching on the big screen with a bucket of popcorn mesmerized by the insanity of it all. If you like disaster films or monster creature features, this is one you don’t want to miss.
