Star Trek #3 delivers a bump in the road named Q

Star Trek #3

Star Trek #3 has been a fun new addition to the world of Star Trek. Not only is it the return of Benjamin Sisko but the crew of this mission features a diverse group of characters from throughout various Trek franchises. This issue sees the return another much beloved character, Q, who has decided to show up to deliver one of its famous tests.

Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, Star Trek #3 feels like a nice self-contained story that has Sisko dealing with the meddling being. Things have gone haywire on the USS Theseus with strange events threatening the crew. Q has decided to pop up and challenge everyone, a speed bump on their mission to find out whos’ killing godlike aliens.

It’s a fun issue delivering a regular Trek episode in comic form and keeping it isolated to a single issue. Even if you haven’t read the series so far, it’s a nice issue to pick up and read. Much of it is self-contained and there’s not a lot you need to know from the first two issues.

What the issue interestingly does is focus on Sisko. His return has been filled with questions and this issue dances around that. What secrets has Sisko be hiding and how has he changed? The issue begins to dig into all of that. But, it also digs into Sisko’s personality and how he’s commanding this mission. Q seems to test that for unknown reason.

The art by Ramon Rosanas and Joe Eisma is good. With Lee Loughridge on color and Clayton Cowles on lettering the comic delivers some fun with the concept. Pages are turned into gauntlets as team members must make their way through the ship. Weird spectral beings haunt other parts of the crew. The interaction with Q has visuals that hearken back to classic episodes of the television series. And overall, the characters are recognizable from their real world versions.

Star Trek #3 is a nice issue to dive in to. You can pick it up without having read the first two and my gut says there’s something more about this encounter to come. Only time will tell.
