No No-Prize for you, sorry! Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes disappeared in 1945, and the US government roped in replacements, to keep the public from despair. That’s William Nasland, the hero previously known as the Spirit of ’76, in the Cap costume, and Fred Davis Jr., former Yankees batboy (no, honest) as Bucky. Later, Nasland would be killed and Jeff Mace (the Patriot) would take over as Cap.
This was all a secret from the public, and Betty doesn’t know it, so it’s not going to come up unless someone explains it to her, and why would they?
Plus, it doesn’t affect the story any, so it wouldn’t make sense to stop the story to explain that those aren’t the original Cap and Bucky. There was an active Cap and Bucky at the time, they were members of the All-Winners Squad, that’s all that matters to this particular tale.
Figured it was the replacement but comic fans and their obsession with detail and getting tripped up by them. And didn’t remember when the replacement happened.
