Comic film adaptations are big dollars and we track how they do each week to see trends and what’s working and what’s not.

2018 is a record setting year for comic film adaptations. It has topped 2017’s record year and then some. Currently, comic adaptations have earned $2.696 billion domestically, $4.557 billion internationally, $7.253 billion worldwide, with a “profit” of $6.041 billion. That’s off of 10 films. 2017, with 16 films, saw domestic earnings of $2.365 billion, international earnings of $3.755 billion, worldwide earnings of $6.120 billion, and “profits” of $4.442 billion.

Captain Marvel dropped to second place this past weekend with a 48.5% dip and an estimated $35 million. Domestically the film has earned $321.5 million. Internationally the film also earned $52.1 million from 54 markets to bring that total to $588.8 million and a worldwide total of $910.3 million. It’s likely to cross $1 billion in the next week or two.

The film has passed Spider-Man 3 in worldwide earnings and moved in to the top ten worldwide earnings for a comic adaptation (not adjusting for inflation). The film needs about $94 million to move up and pass The Dark Knight which is currently #9 for all-time worldwide earnings.

Alita: Battle Angel came in at #10 and earned a little over $1 million to bring its domestic total to $83.7 million. The film also earned about $4 million internationally over the week as that total now stands at $316.1 million. The movie has earned $399.9 million worldwide.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is still bringing in the dollars though not charting on the weekend box office. It brought in about $200 from international markets. The film has earned $30.7 million domestically and $72.8 million internationally for a worldwide total of $103.6 million.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse improved to come in at #19 with an estimated $250,000 to bring its domestic total up to $189.9 million. The film also earned about $3 million over the week internationally and that total now stands at $181 million. Worldwide the film has earned $370.9 million which is enough to have it move past Captain America: The First Avenger in rankings and be #57.

Aquaman continues to bring in the dollars though it didn’t chart over the weekend. Over the week, the film earned about $410,000 domestically to bring its domestic total to $334.5 million. It brought in about $2.5 million internationally to bring that total to $812.1 million for a worldwide total of $1.147 billion.

Shazam! also held special screenings through Fandango where it earned an estimated $3.3 million. That beats How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World‘s $2.6 million from Fandango screenings and Aquaman‘s $2.9 million from Amazon Prime screenings.
