Come Play takes the Top of the Weekend Box Office. The Empty Man Drops to #5

The Empty Man

It’s a new film at the top of the weekend box office as Come Play debuted in first. The film earned an estimated $3.2 million. The film opened in 2,183 theaters with an average of $1,442.

That new first-place film dropped last weekend’s top film to second. Honest Thief came in second with an estimated $1.4 million bringing the domestic total to $9.5 million. The film has also earned $7.6 million internationally for a worldwide total of $17.1 million.

The War with Grandpa dropped to third from last weekend’s second place. The film earned $1.1 million to bring its domestic total to $11.3 million after four weeks. The film has also earned $5.6 million from international theaters to bring its worldwide total to $16.9 million.

Tenet came in fourth place holding that spot with an estimated $885,000. That brings its domestic total to $53.8 million. At the international box office, the film has earned $293.3 million an increase of $4.3 million over the week. That brings its worldwide total to $347.1 million.

In its second weekend, The Empty Man dropped to #5 from last week’s #3. The film earned an estimated $561,000, a drop of 57.2%. That brings the film’s total domestic gross to $2.3 million. Internationally, the film has earned $119,265. That brings the film’s worldwide total to $2.4 million.

In other comic films…

The New Mutants improved one spot from the previous week coming in at #10. The film earned an estimated $145,000 to bring its domestic total to $23.4 million. Its international total also increased by $250,000 from the previous week’s number. It now stands at $21.25 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $44.6 million worldwide.

Alita: Battle Angel also received a re-release coming in at #11 and earning $128,000 from 1,060 theaters. That has brought the domestic earning of the film to $85.8 million.

21 films totaled $8,976,533 over the weekend, an increase of 3 films and a drop of about $1.1 million. That’s from 16,590 theaters, a decrease of about 2,000 theaters from the previous weekend. That’s an average of $541 per theater, a dip of a litte over $4 from the previous week’s $545.42.

Bloodshot Debuts Beating Expectations as the Box Office Tanks

It was a rough weekend at the box office with the lowest earnings in two decades. The fears over the coronavirus kept audiences at home and theaters to close. Despite that, Sony‘s Bloodshot debuted beating expectations. Bloodshot is the latest comic based film, launching a potential new cinematic universe based on Valiant’s comics.

It opened with $9.3 million which actually beat expectations. The audience enjoyed it with a 78% on RottenTomatoes though critics gave it a 31% rating. The opening day audience gave it a “B” CinemaScore.

Internationally, the film opened in 50 markets and was #1 in over half of them. The film brought in $13 million overseas for an international total of $15.1 million. The film opened in Germany in November.

That opening is #154 on the comic film chart. With a budget of $45 million, the film will have a rough time making back its budget due to the current situation. Sony will have to get creative to salvage the situation. Expect an expedited digital release as one solution.

Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey continues to fight for every dollar at the box office but it looks like the current situation will impact it as well.

The film dropped to #11 at the weekend box office from last week’s #8. Birds of Prey brought in an estimated $555,000 over the weekend and $1.5 million over the week. It has earned $84 million in its six weeks.

The film has also earned about $1.1 million internationally. That brings the number to $114.3 million. The film nears $200 million worldwide and has earned $198.4 million.

The film opens in Japan on March 20 though it’s unknown if the virus outbreak will change that.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising continues to bring in the dollars. The film added $600,000 to its domestic total and $12,000 to its international total. It’s earned $28.4 million worldwide so far.

Joker

Joker continues to wind down its run at the box office.

Over the past two weeks, the film earned about $100,000 internationally.

The movie’s $1.074 billion is an amazing haul for a movie whose budget was just $55 million. It caps off a record-setting year for films based on comics.

The movie is currently ranked #11 in worldwide total for a comic adaptation. It’s about $6.8 million from passing The Dark Knight Rises and will crack the top ten at that point. It’s unlikely to do so but you never know.

When it comes to DC films, it’s a most interesting one. The film is marching along and it’s possible it will pass Aquaman‘s domestic total by the time its domestic run is over:

The film is now one of the most profitable comic film adaptations of all time. With a reported budget of $55 million, the movie has a 19.53x return so far. That’s the highest factor for any movie based on a comic beating The Mask which was the previous leader with a 15.29x factor.

The film hasn’t earned the most compared to the budget, that record is held by Avengers: Endgame. Despite a $356 million budget, that movie earned a “profit” of $2.442 billion. Joker has cracked the top ten though having so far earned a “profit” of $1.019 billion.

In a head-scratcher, Warner Bros.’ The Kitchen, based of the DC Vertigo comic, saw a massive boost internationally. While the movie had just $3.8 million reported last week, the total is now $106 million. It’s possible the numbers just took a while to come in, which is not uncommon. That has shifted the film from being a complete disaster to about break even.

Birds of Prey Debuts While Joker Continues to Roll in Cash

Birds of Prey

It was a tale of two R-rated films based on DC properties at the weekend box office. Despite positive reviews, Birds of Prey fell short with an estimated $33.3 million opening weekend. This was far below the studio’s expected $45 million.

This is despite good reviews, even from critics. The film received an 81% on RottenTomatoes and a 60 on Metacritic. Opening day audiences gave it a “B+” CinemaScore and audiences have given it an 83% score on RottenTomatoes.

The film’s audience was 51% female and 65% of the audience was age 25 or older. Theories blame the R-rating for the struggles but that’s easily blown out of the water by the earnings of Deadpool, Logan, and last year’s Joker. The latter film has earned over $1 billion at the box office with a similar budget. The fact it’s a female lead film is also debunked when one can point to Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel as recent successes.

Internationally, the film opened in 78 markets earning $48 million. Japan will be the final market and opens on March 20.

With a budget of $84.5 million, Birds of Prey should make its money back easily but the debut will surely get studios to rethink their future plans.

Joker

Joker continues to wind down its run but saw a bit of a boost going into the Oscars.

Over the past week, the film earned about $200,000 domestically which is an increase from the $170,000 it earned over the previous week. The film’s total now stands at $335.1 million.

Internationally, the film added $500,000 over the week down from the previous week’s $600,000. It’s earned $736.8 million internationally.

The movie’s $1.072 billion is an amazing haul for a movie whose budget was just $55 million. It caps off a record-setting year for films based on comics.

The movie is currently ranked #11 in worldwide total for a comic adaptation. It’s about $9.2 million from passing The Dark Knight Rises and will crack the top ten at that point. It’s unlikely to do so but you never know.

When it comes to DC films, it’s a most interesting one. The film is marching along and it’s possible it will pass Aquaman‘s domestic total by the time its domestic run is over:

Joker Gets an Award Win Bump

Joker

Joker looks like it got a Golden Globe post-award win bump that will likely continue now that it leads the 92nd Oscar nominations.

Over the past week, the film earned $550,000 domestically which is a massive increase from the $41,000 it earned over the past two weeks. The film’s total now stands at $334 million.

Internationally, the film added $3.2 million over the week besting the $2.2 million it earned over the two weeks prior.

The movie’s $1.067 billion is an amazing haul for a movie whose budget was just $55 million. It caps off a record-setting year for films based on comics.

The movie is currently ranked #11 in worldwide total for a comic adaptation. It’s about $14.3 million from passing The Dark Knight Rises and will crack the top ten at that point. It’s unlikely to do so but you never know.

When it comes to DC films, it’s a most interesting one. The film is marching along and it’s possible it will pass Aquaman‘s domestic total by the time its domestic run is over:

Joker has been doing quite well in international earnings where Warner Bros. has had issues in the past. Aquaman indicates a shift for the company and lessons seem to be continued with Joker.

The film is now one of the most profitable comic film adaptations of all time. With a reported budget of $55 million, the movie has an 19.4x return so far.

Joker has cracked the top ten though having so far earned a “profit” of $1.012 billion.
