Review: Uncanny X-Men #13

Uncanny X-Men #13

Cyclops and Wolverine have drawn together a new team of X-Men from the ashes of “X-Men Disassembled,” and now they turn their eyes to setting their agenda. Cyclops has a list…a list of things the X-Men have to take care of…if it’s the last thing they ever do.

The X-Men are back and Cyclops has to figure out what their first act of business is. Uncanny X-Men #13 is the start of Cyclops’ mission to leave the world in a better place as things aren’t looking good for the X-Men and mutants as a whole. They’re again outlaws in a world that hates them and they don’t care, they’ve got a mission. Writer Matthew Rosenberg delivers a hell of an issue full of action and focus. This is the issue we get a true sense as to where this series is going and what we can expect.

There’s something fresh about this take but at the same time it feels like a throwback in many ways. The team is once again outlaws and things just aren’t looking good. And the team dynamic? It’s great. With a mix of X-Men and New Mutants (with a twist) the team is not quite dysfunctional but one that is full of attitude. It just makes it all a bit more fun an entertaining.

The art by Salvador Larroca is top notch with color from Guru-eFX and lettering by Joe Caramagna. The action is fierce and there’s a solid amount of detail to help tell the story. A look on a face, a nod of a head, they’re there to really help sell the moment. There’s great action and beyond a panel or two where I couldn’t quite tell what was going on, it’s just full of action and energy.

The X-Men have stumbled for quite some time and they’re getting back to the awesome we’ve wanted. This is a great mix of some of the classic team situations we’ve had in the past but with an update that feels new and exciting. Where it felt like a chore to read X-Men comics in recent years (with some bright spots) I’m now looking forward to each issue of Uncanny X-Men and can’t wait to see where it all goes.
