Sequels Rule the Box Office as The Equalizer 2 Barely Edges Out Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

It was the battle of the sequels at the weekend box office and early reports have The Equalizer 2 winning the weekend with an estimated $35.8 million. It beat Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! which came in second with an estimated $34.4 million.

The Equalizer 2 topped the opening of the first film which earned $34.1 million for the first weekend. It received an “A” Cinemascore, again beating the originals “A-“. Internationally the film opened in 11 markets bringing in an estimated $3.3 million. The film has a long opening around the world wrapping up in October.

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again also beat its first film by almost $7 million. It received an “A-” Cinemascore with 83% of the opening weekend audience was female. With little competition this summer, the film should do well. It opened in 41 markets and outperformed the original in 34 of those. It brought in $42.4 million for the foreign box office giving it a grand total of $76.8 million after its first weekend. That tops the budget of $75 million.

In third place was last weekend’s champ, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. It earned $23.2 million to bring its domestic gross to $91.1 million. Internationall it added $37.7 million to bring its overseas total to $115.6 million and $206.7 million worldwide. It still has a few openings well into August.

Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 45% in its third weekend earning an estimated $16.1 million to bring its domestic total to $164.6 million. It earned $21.6 million internationally for an overseas total of $188.9 million and worldwide total of $353.5 million. The film will open in Germany, Austria, and Hungry next weekend, the UK August 2nd, Italy on August 14th, and Japan on August 31st. The film seems to be outpacing the original domestically but internationally we’ll have to wait and see after some of those openings. The UK drove a decent amount of earnings for the original some the comparison is difficult.

Rounding out the top five was Incredibles 2 which brought in $11.5 million to bring its domestic total to $557.3 million. It also earned $36.5 million internationally and worldwide it stands at $940.4 million. This film will be crossing the billion dollar mark.

In other comic films….

Deadpool 2 was #19 for the weekend earning $460,000 to bring its domestic total to $317.1 million and worldwide it has earned $732.9 million.

Avengers: Infinity War was right behind at #20 adding $402,000 to its total to bring it to $676.8 million domestically and $2.043 billion worldwide.

Black Panther added $25,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $699.9 million. We’re on our edge to see if it can cross $700 million domestically. Worldwide the film stands at $1.347 billion.

Next weekend sees the opening of a new comic based film, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies. This one will be a contender for first though it goes up against Mission Impossible – Fallout. Expect the Titans to come in second with a possible surprise first place.

We’ll be back in an hour for an even deeper dive into this year’s comic adaptations.
