Mission: Impossible – Fallout Debuts with a Franchise Best while Teen Titans Go! to the Movies Struggles

Mission: Impossible – Fallout topped the box office with an estimated $61.5 million, which is the franchise’s largest three-day opening. It’s also the second largest opening for a Tom Cruise film.

The film earned the best reviews for the franchise, a 97% on RottenTomatoes and 86 on Metacritic as of writing. The opending day audience gave the film a franchise-best of “A” CinemaScore. Not suprisingly, the film was 55% male.

The film debuted in 36 markets delivering an estimated $92 million which is the biggest opening for the franchise.

With a positive reaction from audiences and it being at the tail end of the summer, the film should do quite well.

In second place was Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with an estimated $15 million. Domestically the film has topped $70 million. It too has little competition for its demographic so should be interesting to see what legs it has.

The Equalizer 2 dropped to third place after topping the box office last weeked. With a $14 million estimate, the film dropped a lot more than original. It’s just short of $65 million after ten days.

In fourth place was Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation which brought in an estimated $12.3 million to bring its domestic total to $119.2 million after three weekends.

Rounding out the top five was Teen Titans Go! To the Movies which brought in an estimated $10.5 million. That’s far short of expectation which had the film opening in the mid-teens. We expected the film to easily be second for the weekend. The film has a budget of just $10 million, so the poor performance isn’t a disaster. What’s strange is the film has a very positive word of mouth. The film also opened in eight small markets internationally bringing in an estimated $1 million.

In other comic films…

Ant-Man and the Wasp brought in an estimated $8.4 million bringing the domestic total to $183.2 million which pushed it past the original. The film has a reported budget of $162-$195 million more than $30 million than the original which had a budget of $130 million. Worldwide the film stands at $394.2 million where the original earned $519.3 million.

Avengers: Infinity War earned an estimated $388,000 to bring its domestic total to $677.5 million and come in at #21 for the weekend.

Deadpool 2 brought in an estimated $270,000 to come in at #24 for the weekend. Its domestic total is $317.7 million so far.

Black Panther gets closer to that elusive $700 million domestically by bringing in an estimated $3,000 and coming in at #44 for the weekend. It stands at $699,955,434 domestically.

We’ll be back in an hour for a deeper dive into this year’s comic film adaptations.

Sequels Rule the Box Office as The Equalizer 2 Barely Edges Out Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!

It was the battle of the sequels at the weekend box office and early reports have The Equalizer 2 winning the weekend with an estimated $35.8 million. It beat Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! which came in second with an estimated $34.4 million.

The Equalizer 2 topped the opening of the first film which earned $34.1 million for the first weekend. It received an “A” Cinemascore, again beating the originals “A-“. Internationally the film opened in 11 markets bringing in an estimated $3.3 million. The film has a long opening around the world wrapping up in October.

Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again also beat its first film by almost $7 million. It received an “A-” Cinemascore with 83% of the opening weekend audience was female. With little competition this summer, the film should do well. It opened in 41 markets and outperformed the original in 34 of those. It brought in $42.4 million for the foreign box office giving it a grand total of $76.8 million after its first weekend. That tops the budget of $75 million.

In third place was last weekend’s champ, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. It earned $23.2 million to bring its domestic gross to $91.1 million. Internationall it added $37.7 million to bring its overseas total to $115.6 million and $206.7 million worldwide. It still has a few openings well into August.

Ant-Man and the Wasp dropped 45% in its third weekend earning an estimated $16.1 million to bring its domestic total to $164.6 million. It earned $21.6 million internationally for an overseas total of $188.9 million and worldwide total of $353.5 million. The film will open in Germany, Austria, and Hungry next weekend, the UK August 2nd, Italy on August 14th, and Japan on August 31st. The film seems to be outpacing the original domestically but internationally we’ll have to wait and see after some of those openings. The UK drove a decent amount of earnings for the original some the comparison is difficult.

Rounding out the top five was Incredibles 2 which brought in $11.5 million to bring its domestic total to $557.3 million. It also earned $36.5 million internationally and worldwide it stands at $940.4 million. This film will be crossing the billion dollar mark.

In other comic films….

Deadpool 2 was #19 for the weekend earning $460,000 to bring its domestic total to $317.1 million and worldwide it has earned $732.9 million.

Avengers: Infinity War was right behind at #20 adding $402,000 to its total to bring it to $676.8 million domestically and $2.043 billion worldwide.

Black Panther added $25,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $699.9 million. We’re on our edge to see if it can cross $700 million domestically. Worldwide the film stands at $1.347 billion.

Next weekend sees the opening of a new comic based film, Teen Titans Go! to the Movies. This one will be a contender for first though it goes up against Mission Impossible – Fallout. Expect the Titans to come in second with a possible surprise first place.

We’ll be back in an hour for an even deeper dive into this year’s comic adaptations.

Hotel Transylvania 3 Tops the Box Office While Ant-Man and the Wasp Shrinks a Hefty 62%

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation won the weekend box office with an estimated $44.1 million. That amount doesn’t include the $1.27 million the film earned through special Amazon Prime member previews June 30th. That’s all a bit short of the second film’s $48.5 million in September 2015. But, with all of the competition, that’s a solid showing for the film.

The movie received an “A-” CinemaScore from the opening day audiences. The film’s audience was 52% female, and 32% was 25 years or older.

That film’s win was Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s loss. That movie dropped a massive 62% from the previous week to come in second place. That’s the second largest second weekend drop for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. It’s the fifth Marvel film to not repeat in first place in its second weekend. The movie earned an estimated $29.1 million to bring its domestic total to $132.8 million. The film also added $35.3 million from 44 markets to push its worldwide total to $283.7 million.

In third place was a debut, Skyscraper. The film earned an estimated $25.5 million which fell short of estimates the film would earn around $30 million. The film also opened in 57 markets to earn $40.4 million for a $65.9 million global debut. The film received a “B+” CinemaScore and played to an audience that was 55% male and 52% was 25 years or older.

Incredibles 2 was in fourth place with an estimated $16.2 million to bring its domestic total to $535.8 million. It passed The Dark Knight to become the ninth largest overall film all-time domestically. The film also added $33.3 million internationally and the grand total of the film stands at $856.9 million.

Rounding out the top five was Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom which dropped from second place. The film earned an estimated $15.5 million to bring its domestic total to $363.3 million. Internationally the film added $26.7 million pusing its global total to $1.134 billion.
