Review: Star Wars: Chewbacca #5

Chewbacca #5Chewbacca and Zarro face their final challenge…the coming of the Empire! But No Wookiee, No Cry- they’re up for it! This is one walking carpet who’s not going to be stepped on!

Marvel‘s Star Wars comics have generally been knocking it out of the park. This miniseries has been good, though not great adding not a whole lot (so far) to the greater myth. What it is, is a solo Chewie series, that adds a sliver to the character’s depth.

This issue wraps it all up, and out of the comic, 3 pages I found to be fantastic, the rest is a shrug of the shoulders. There’s nothing necessarily bad as far as the story crafted by writer Gerry Duggan, but there’s nothing that stands out or feels like it needs to be said, which is a shift from every other Star Wars series Marvel has released so far. I don’t feel like I know more about the character, or the comic fills a gap and question I had about the character or world. It’s readable filler in many ways.

Phil Noto‘s art is the best part of the series which a cool style I enjoyed to check out throughout. Here it works well. I’ll say there seems to be a focus to not go over the top in detail which really works.

The miniseries as a whole is a good read, and this final issue wraps it up nicely. But as a must read for Star Wars fans, it’s low on the list. Still, there’s solid moments throughout, and three pages here that are great. Hopefully we’ll get more Chewie in the future, and a miniseries that gives us more depth about the furry warrior.
