Review: East of West #12
What draws readers to certain comics is sometimes their complexity. Fans love a deeply intricate story that weaves together wonderfully imagined characters with an overall captivating mythology. Top that off with art that is out of this world and you have a title that deserves your hard earned dollars. East of West is one of those titles. Easily one of Image‘s top five comic books, you can’t help but fall into each of the pages and feel like you are a part of this truly unique story.
East of West #12 continues the story of the Nations on the brink of the Apocalypse. What I love most about this issue is the fact that we get to see each representative of their respective land. They sit around the symbolic round-table, discussing at length the war looming on the horizon. I am thinking that this arc will be a prelude to the war that possibly could get played out in the fourth or fifth Trade. While all representatives are sitting around the table we catch a glimpse of where each stands with respect to going to war and it’s interesting to see how some yield power as others try show it outright. Writer Jonathan Hickman really shows us how deep he can make these characters and makes you feel like you know each one of them on another level. And I, for one, cannot wait to learn more about the intriguing Doma Lux. She is a very interesting character to say the least and we do get a few pages this issue to learn more about her motives in the overall plot.
East of West is a brilliant book and issue #12 has some great art as only Nick Dragotta could deliver. How he imagines Hickman’s story is extraordinary. I love the alternative reality plot of East of West, but even if I didn’t I would still buy the book for the art alone. Together, Dragotta and Hickman have created something really unique and special.
Thoughts, Discussion and Spoilers Ahead!
– What is Doma Lux’s ultimate goal? Is she working alone or in connection with her superior?
– As a result of what happened near the end of this issue, will we finally see the war that has been hinted at? Who will strike first?
