East of West Ends with a Final Showdown in December 2019

The long-running, science fiction/western crossover series East of West by Jonathan Hickman and artist Nick Dragotta will come to a show-stopping end with the final issue of the series, East of West #45, set to land in stores this December from Image Comics.

The beloved dystopian series first launched as a monthly series from Image in March 2013 and explores a dystopian America, divided into seven nations, wherein the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are cast as heroes.

In East of West #45, the epic world-building, political intrigue, and character drama wrap up into a final showdown that will shock fans.

The East of West series will be collected into ten trade paperbacks and three deluxe hardcover editions total. East of West, Vol. 1-9 trade paperbacks are available now and East of West: Year One and East of West: Year Two deluxe hardcovers are available now.

East of West #45 will be available at comic book shops on Wednesday, December 25.

Top Pick: Gideon Falls Volume 1 (Image Comics) – Lemire and Sorrentino is a match made in comic heaven, and this is a series that doesn’t disappoint. It’s creepy, dark, and it’s perfect for Halloween!

Black Badge #3 (BOOM! Studios) – Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins resume their awesome work from Grass Kings, and now tell the tale of North Korea, Boy Scouts, and Spies. It’s wild, and one of the most original and fun books I’ve read in awhile.

Runaways #14 (Marvel Comics) – Consistently one of Marvel’s best books every single month. Rainbow Rowell and Kris Anka give such a touching and fun book, and something different from the usual superhero books.

Venom Annual #1 (Marvel Comics) – I usually don’t love annuals, and their $4.99 price tag, but this has Cates still on the book, and will serve as a great jumping on point for one of Marvel’s best.

Justice League #10 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder and Francis Manupul is another great pair for comics this week. The series has had its pedal to the medal like usual Snyder stories and I don’t expect it to let up. This will also start the ”Drowned Earth” storyline that will be Aquaman focused, and that cover art alone has me hyped.

Top Pick: Shuri #1 (Marvel) – She was the break out star of Black Panther and Marvel recognizing that is giving her her own series. With T’Challa missing, she must choose between herself and her country. Can’t wait to see another perspective of Wakanda.

Archie 1941 #2 (Archie Comics) – What if Archie took place in the lead up to World War II? The first issue was really good with a good mix of history and we’re expecting more of that with this one.

Captain Ginger #1 (AHOY Comics) – AHOY has been damn near perfect with their three releases so far and we’re expecting no less from this one.

East of West #39 (Image Comics) – This weird west apocalyptic story has delivered with every issue and this far in, we want to see where it goes.

Low Road West #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue started off as a apocalyptic type story and then veered into fantasy. We’re intrigued. We’re very intrigued.

Superman Isn’t Jewish (But I Am Kinda) (Life Drawn/Humanoids) – An interesting exploration of Jewish identity in modern times.

Transformers: Optimus Prime #24 (IDW Publishing) – IDW’s current run on Transformers is winding down with everything coming together and we’re glued to the pages of every release.

The Unstoppable Wasp #1 (Marvel) – Writer Jeremy Whitley is back and so is Nadia! The first volume was beyond fantastic with a mix of fun, action, science, and girl power! We’re expecting no less and are so excited.

Jonathan Hickman’s East of West and Transhuman are Being Developed by Amazon Studios

Amazon Studios is working on two more comic series with East of West and Transhuman, both by comic creator Jonathan Hickman. Hickman has worked with artist Nick Dragotta on East of West and artist J.M. Ringuet on Transhuman.

Hickman is working with Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, who will executive produce the series under Skybound Entertainment‘s first-look deal with Amazon Studios.

Both series will be exectuive produced by Hickman and Dragotta and Ringuet. Hickman will write East of West while another writer is being looked for to adapt Transhuman.

East of West is a re-imagined western with America divided into different regions and a conspiracy involving a prophecy. Death, as in the Four Horseman, searches for his son while the other three Horsemen work to bring about the end times.

Transhuman is a science fiction story about a divorced couple who ran a corpration allowing humans to enhance themselves through robotics and genetically.

Top Pick: Batman #42 (DC Comics) – The last Poison Ivy issue was great, and I cannot wait to continue it. Ivy vs Cat will be a blast!

Doctor Strange: Damnation #2 (Marvel) – Doctor Strange is always best when it’s weird, and boy this is super weird.

Infinity Countdown #1 (Marvel) – I am actually semi-excited for Marvel rebooting, though it just happened not long ago with Legacy. Infinity Countdown Prime and the Warlock comic have both been solid and set up some neat things. I have semi-high hopes for this.

Super Sons Vol. 2 (DC Comics) – This series is great, and this was a fun arc. Jon and Damien are great together, and though the series is ending, I am sure we see more of them sometime soon.

Top Pick: Bloodshot Salvation #7 (Valiant) – There’s not much I can say about this that I have’t already said in my reviews, but the long and the short of it is that I want this as an example of what comics are capable of as a visual medium. Jeff Lemire is one of the better writers in comics right now, and here he takes over the art (such that it is) to tell a story using only the panel borders and the letters against completely black pages. It’s a phenomenally ambitious comic.

Oblivion Song by Kirkman & De Felici #1 (Image Comics/Skybound) – I’ve read the first issue and it’s a solid one featuring a national tragedy, alien world, and at its heart a story about two brothers. There’s so much thought and detail put into the first issue, this one will be an absolute beast of a series and definite hit.

Dodge City #1 (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! has found success with a series about fencing and now we have one about dodge ball. The first issue is fun and entertaining and continues to bring the success we’ve seen with sports focused manga to western audiences.

East of West #36 (Image Comics) – Every issue of this series has been impressive and this issue left my jaw on the floor. Just amazing visuals and really moves the story along. Start from the beginning with this series and enjoy.

Gideon Falls #1 (Image Comics) – If Jeff Lemire writing the series wasn’t enough, Andrea Sorrentino on the art is the cherry on top.

Mech Cadet Yu #7 (BOOM! Studios) – Kids + giant robots vs. aliens. What else do you need to know? A fun series that brings the things I love about Pacific Rim to a wider aged audience.

Top Pick: Ninja-K #1 (Valiant) – I’m beyond excited for this. I’ve had this on my radar for some time, and even with the (currently unread at the time of this writing) review copy sat in my inbox I am still super excited to get the physical copy on Wednesday from my LCS.

Bloodshot Salvation #3 (Valiant) – So… see above.

Fence #1 (BOOM! Studios) – I used to be a half decent fencer, but I’m old and slow now. Still, a comic about fencing? Why not? Sometimes you don’t want to read about superheroes all the time, and this looks to be an interesting change of pace.

Top Pick: Fence #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Read it already an absolutely loved the first issue which reminded me a lot of some of the manga I’ve read that’s focused on sports. The issue is fun, relatable, with a great introduction to the characters an the world. It also sets up everything to come really well.

Bolivar (BOOM! Studios/Archaia) – I’m raving about this graphic novel with its cute story and art that is jaw dropping. This is a must get and perfect holiday gift.

East of West #35 (Image Comics) – I’m all in with this series when it comes to the world and mythology and each issue has me excited to see what comes next.

Mech Cadet Yu #4 (BOOM! Studios) – This series is giant robots and kid pilots battling aliens. It’s awesome in other words and a series that’s enjoyable no matter your age. There’s a lot of layers and things to chew on along with an action packed story.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #14 (Marvel) – My favorite Star Wars comic right now. Aphra is the best addition to the universe in a long time and it’s basically a sci-fi Indiana Jones.

Top Pick: X-O Manowar #3 (Valiant) – Two words: Space Conan. More words: My favourite series from any publisher right now, this is a beautifully illustrated an fantastically written comic.

Rapture #1 (Valiant) – Another Valiant comic written by Matt Kindt? Just take my money.

Vile #2 (Study Group Comics) – Alright so this doesn’t come out this week, and is actually sat in my To-Read pile…. but I have every intention of reading Tyler Landry’s stream of consciousness style of story telling this week.

Top Pick: Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new take on the classic Frankenstein story. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a  while since it sounds like it’ll touch on social issues that are prevalent today giving it all a new spin.

Saucer State #1 (IDW Publishing) – This was an awesome series when that last volume came out through Vertigo. Thankfully we get another conspiracy filled volume. Think the X-Files but the President is involved in the investigation. A solid mix of conspiracy and politics.

Batman/The Shadow #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue I was mixed on, but I’m really excited to see where this second one goes. It’s a team up of two classic characters that works so well together.

East of West #33 (Image Comics) – This series always delivers in a weird mix of the Wild West, political maneuvering and religious fervor.

Samaritan Veritas #1 (Top Cow Productions) – Spinning out of the Postal/Think Tank world of Top Cow is a new series focused on hacker looking to take down a corrupt President…
