BOY-1 Evolves This August at IDW

IDW Publishing is adding the thrilling new creator-owned science-fiction miniseries, BOY-1, to their hit list of summer releases.

Penned by writer and creator HS Tak and vividly rendered by artist Amancay Nahuelpan, BOY-1 captures the futuristic journey of a man who discovers he is the subject of a groundbreaking experiment that spins out of control and soon threatens the extinction of all mankind. With nations hunting him as they struggle to maintain order, every move he makes comes with a thousand repercussions.

BOY-1 is set in a world after the completion of The Human Genome Project heralds a new age in science, medicine, and technology, but any form of human cloning has been deemed incompatible with society’s standard of ethics.

It then goes on to explore what could happen if a group of intrepid researchers didn’t listen…

BOY-1 is also being developed for television by Scripted World (Alon Aranya and Rob Golenberg), the producers behind Hostages and Betrayal.

Look for BOY-1 coming from IDW this August with stunning covers by Zach Howard and Amancay Nahuelpan as Scripted World targets a network TV launch in 2016.

Preview: The Claws Come Out This January in Wolverines #1!

His death was only the beginning. Spinning directly out of the chart-topping Death of Wolverine, The Logan Legacy and The Weapon X Program comes a brand-new weekly series kicking off this January in Wolverines #1! Today, Marvel is pleased to present your new look at the blockbuster first issue from the star-studded creative team of Charles Soule, Ray Fawkes, Alisson Borges and All-New Young Gun artist Nick Bradshaw!

Wolverine may be dead, but the weekly journey is just beginning as his mortal remains, now encased in the rare and powerful adamantium, are up for grabs. The battle begins as various factions vie for control of this valuable artifact. But why does it matter so much? And why is a war brewing in Logan’s name?

Death is on the books for a number of Marvel’s heroes and villains, and Mystique is playing chess with them all. X-23, Daken, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, the mysterious man known only as Sharp and many, many more!

In an interview with Marvel.com, Ray Fawkes said:

“In a way, most of the characters featured in [Wolverines] are incomplete reflections of Wolverine. Perhaps now that he’s gone, they are free to fully realize themselves? Or maybe they’ll be annihilated by the void that he’s left behind?

The true enemy is still out there. With Logan gone, they pose a greater threat than ever before. An unlikely team of his closest allies and most bitter rivals will need to work together if they have any hope of avenging his death – but how can they?

Soule added in the same interview:

The group here is not a set of people who are particularly interested in doing anything together unless they absolutely have to.

Logan’s end was just the beginning. As those who called him friend mourn his passing, those who called him foe are free to pursue their sinister aims. Now, those with close ties to him will forge an uneasy alliance to uncover the secrets behind  his death, and new revelations about his life!

2015 is kicking off with the “SNIKT” that shouldn’t be missed as the weekly adventure begins in Wolverines #1!

Review: Wild Blue Yonder #1, The X-Files Season 10 #1

Wild Blue Yonder #1

Wild-Blue-Yonder-1_CTake to the skies in this thrilling new action-adventure sci-fi tale. In the near future, mankind has destroyed the Earth, and the only refuge from radioactive pollution can be found in the skies. Unfortunately dwindling supplies and bloodthirsty air-pirates make life all the harder. Will the crew of the Dawn escape the merciless Judge and survive another week?

I love stories about fighter pilots duking it out in the sky. Then there’s stories like these with settings where planes are cobbled together in an alternative history. Crimson Skies is something similar that comes to mind. Those are worlds I find interesting and entertaining.

The comic starts off relatively slow, but entertaining. After a quick introduction to some of the main characters, what goes from slow blasts into full throttle and we don’t look back. There’s something brilliant in that execution.

At first I thought the comic was good. The characters and world seemed interesting enough, and then we’re thrown into the action with excitement that had me hooked. I loved the dog fights and interesting air battle we’re thrown into the middle of. It was fun, exciting and the quick change of pace made it all the more fun because it was unexpected.

The first issue introduces us into the varied characters, the cool world and some of the story. Wild Blue Yonder had buzz going in to its release and it lives up to every bit of it. Can’t wait for the second issue.

The X-Files Season 10 #1

the x-files season 10 #1 coverFor years they investigated the paranormal, pursued the “monsters of the week,” and sought the truth behind extraterrestrial activity, along with the grand conspiracy surrounding it rooted deep within their own government. But when Agents Mulder and Scully reunite for a new, ongoing series that ushers The X-Files into a new era of technological paranoia, multinational concerns and otherworldly threats, it’ll take more than a desire “to believe” to make it out alive. The X-Files: Season 10 also sees creator Chris Carter return to the fold as Executive Producer!

I was a die-hard X-Files fan back in the day. I’d watch the show weekly, often heading to friends houses to enjoy each new episode. At it’s best, it was one of the best sci-fi/mystery series ever on television. I suffered through its decline, the movies, the ho-hum ending, but I remember it as a solid series, one I’d watch now regularly if it were on re-runs.

So, I went in to this first issue with hope. Where could it go from the series ending?

The first issue is pretty decent. Really it has a lot on its hands, as it needs to follow up on how the series ended and continue on with Mulder and Scully’s story. It’s hard to judge this first issue, as the X-Files really needs to be rated episode by episode, so it’s weird judging one issue as opposed to a full arc (to me its like reviewing 15 minutes of an episode).

The comic is good. I felt like time hasn’t passed and got right back in to two familiar characters, not realizing how much I missed their adventures. The set up is interesting and seems somewhat new. But it’s one chunk of the story and I think the arc, thus the trade, will be better than any individual issue.

With our modern era and all the things going on, there’s no better time for the X-Files to return. With so much real world conspiracy going on every day, it’s only fitting that two of the best investigators of it are back in action.

Aliens and Zombies Invade IDW!

This spring at IDW, where there’s aliens, there’s zombies! In The Colonized, a new four-issue series launching in April, writer Chris Ryall, artist Drew Moss, and cover artist Dave Sim explore the arrival of these strangely interwoven threats in a secluded separatist town in Montana.

In the Carbon Falls Collective, Huxley Robertson is dealing with the passing of his father and pushing against old guard objections as he attempts to push the separatist camp into becoming a fully sustainable green town. As if circumstances weren’t volatile enough, a craft full of alien explorers inadvertently re-animates the town’s dead! Throw a rogue ATF agent into the mix, on the hunt for the town’s weapons cache, and let’s just say this is a bad time for the otherwise sleepy Carbon Falls Collective to be cut off from the outside world.

This potent mix of horror, drama, and black humor comes from Chris Ryall, no stranger to either aliens (Groom Lake) or zombies (Zombies vs. Robots), working with illustrator Drew Moss (Zombies vs. Robots Annual), and Locke & Key colorist Jay Fotos, with legendary Cerebus creator Dave Sim providing covers for the four-issue affair.

In addition to Sim’s covers, each issue will also offer special subscription-only variants from stellar artists like John Byrne–who tackles issue one–Gabriel Rodriguez, Zach Howard, and a player-to-be-named-soon.

THE COLONIZED #1 ($3.99, 32 pages; full color) will be available in stores in April 2013.

King, Hill, and Matheson Experience Road Rage, Out This Week in Hardcover

[Road Rage HC]IDW Publishing releases the hardcover comic book collection of Road Rage, available tomorrow in comic book stores throughout North America. Renowned author Stephen King and Eisner-winner Joe Hill collaborated for the first time in Throttle, a story that paid tribute to Richard Matheson’s classic tale of suspense Duel. Now, Road Rage presents the four-issue compilation of the comic-book tellings of both stories.

Adapting the story alongside Hill and King is Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer, and editor of Hill’s New York Times best-selling graphic novel series, Locke & Key. The respective artists on the two stories were Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres. Available on Wednesday, Road Rage will feature all-new introductions by King and Hill, as well as an all-new wraparound cover by Zach Howard and Daniel, and additional sketches and character designs from Daniel.

The first part of the series, Throttle, tells the story of a motorcycle gang pursued by an unseen assailant in a big rig, but as might be expected knowing the talent involved, things aren’t exactly as they seem. Daniel, whose own collaboration with Hill and artist Howard, THE CAPE, was nominated for a 2011 Eisner Award, handles full art and colors for this portion. Afterwards, Duel presents the adaptation of the Matheson story that inspired Throttle, with artist Garra providing visuals for this thrilling conclusion.

ROAD RAGE ($24.99, 120 pages, full color) will be available August 8, 2012 in comic stores throughout North America.

SDCC 2012 – IDW Blasts Off to the Wild Blue Yonder

[Wild Blue Yonder Image]IDW Publishing has announced a brand-new creator-owned miniseries from creators Mike Raicht, Zach Howard, and Austin Harrison featuring color by Nelson Daniel. When land and sea have become deadly and uninhabitable, the intrepid survivors of ecological disaster must take to the skies; to the Wild Blue Yonder.

In a wildly imaginative take on the post-apocalyptic thriller, Raicht, Howard and Harrison have created an eye-popping world of flying machines, massive, makeshift fortresses and a desperate war among the dwindling population left to the scarce resources on land. As mankind has become accustomed to the reality of a prosperous life only existing in sky bound territory, a desperate war has broken out for control and survival on the ground and high above it.

Clashing factions fight tooth and nail with primitive weapons in a thrilling, high-stakes world of tightly-knit families and deeply realized characters, all cobbling together a life in a world beyond imagination.

SDCC 2012 – Swierczynski and Daniel to Helm Judge Dredd

[Judge Dredd Image]After announcing their partnership with the legendary 2000 AD at WonderCon 2012, IDW Publishing has announced Duane Swierczynski and Nelson Daniel as the creative team for their brand-new Judge Dredd series. The announcement was made to a capacity crowd during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012 celebrating Dredd’s 35th anniversary.

Daniel will be running point on the main story’s art and colors, but they’ll also be doing back-up stories in each issue that are tied to the ongoing storyline and that will be illustrated by some big-name talents as well. Folks like Paul Gulacy, Jim Starlin, and many others. Add to that covers by people like Ashley Wood, Carlos Ezquerra, Zach Howard, Whilce Portacio, and so many others, and there will be lots of exciting new artistic interpretations of Dredd to come.

IDW’s Judge Dredd series will see new adventures from the legendary character—originally created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the lauded British anthology magazine 2000 AD—who has seen a long and storied career as one of comics’ most popular and enduring characters. For this take on Dredd, IDW and 2000 AD wanted to put creators behind the wheel that hadn’t worked with the character before, creating new stories that would appeal to new Dredd fans, as well as long-time lovers of the rich world of Mega City One.

Citizens, consider yourselves advised; this November, comics are the law!

IDW Publishing Reivews: Ghostbusters #2, The Cape #2, Monocyte #1

Ghostbusters #2

The first issue of the series I was a bit torn on the fact that the look of the comic fit more with the animated series as opposed to a grittier horror style, but with the second issue it’s really grown on me.  The second issue is all about the setup as opposed the first’s re-introduction of the characters.  Something strange is indeed going on in the neighborhood as ghosts and ghouls are stronger than ever, making it tougher for our paranormal eliminators to do their jobs.

The humor is great, each character really has a distinct personality and they fit with what we know from the movies.  But, the question does pop up, how much of this is me projecting my love of the comic series?  Part of the fun is all of the wink and nods of what’s come before.  It’s entertaining because it brings back great memories, but also adds a nice touch to tie the comic to the movies.

The art has grown on me and the action and the latter ghost are actually pretty solid.  The ghost kids are very creepy, reminding me of the little girl in The Sixth Sense.  The second issue I think improves on the first and the set up as to what’s to come is great.

In the second movie the four triumphantly cheered “we’re back” and with this series it feels like they truly are.  Definitely call this series.

The Cape #2

The first issue of The Cape was one of those comics I put down and said, “holy crap.”  It was that good.  The second issue is just as solid with Eric continuing his trip off the deep end and attempts at revenge against those he feels wronged him like his brother Nicky.

There’s a mix of the present and past and we get a good sense as to why Eric is so messed up.  He’s given this amazing power after being told over and over that he’s worthless.  That’d get to you eventually and because of that, he’s now corrupted.  There’s that saying about absolute power… But, Eric doesn’t care anymore, he’s emboldened by his actions, becoming seen more and more.

But in the end, this is a family piece and the conflict is really between Eric, Nicky and their mother.  We’ve seen this type of story before, where one son feels rejected and plots revenge on his family, but there’s so much here that makes it entertaining and engrossing.

Written by Jason Ciaramella with art by Zach Howard and inspired by a short story by Joe Hill, the comic is beyond solid.  You understand the villain’s motivation and can’t help feel a little bad for him, no matter all of the horrible things he does.  Each issue seems to ramp that up piece by piece, and judging by that last panel, the next issue will add a bit more.

Monocyte #1

What the hell did I read here!?  It’s like Hellraiser and H.R. Geiger had a kid and the kid was really into the Bible, Dark City and the environment.  The comic is amazing to look at and that’s the draw to me.  The visuals and art is stunning with that sickening beauty you’d find in Hellraiser or a Geiger drawing.

The story is interesting and I’m still not quite sold on it, because there’s really not a whole lot there.  The words and dialogue are kept to a minimum which causes a good part of the story to be told in two pages laying out the factions involved and their history.  Once you read that it somewhat makes sense.

The story is basically a tech based race that feeds on humans versus a more environmentally friendly group that also seems to feed on humans.  Both sides look right at home at a BDSM party and share wardrobe with cenobytes.

The concept and style are very interesting and it all can only be judged after a few issues.  The art is stunning, story is mixed for me.  But, it’s still a recommend buy for me.  The art alone is that solid and how it’s laid out is so different and interesting.  This is a minimalist’s comic as far as story telling forcing you to do some work to put it together.  Overall, very interesting start and very unique even with it’s similarities to those things mentioned.
