Exclusive: Get a look at Art and Commentary for Orson James, Roman Calais, and Jor Ros’ Bad Influence, a Webtoon Original

HiHi Studios — the manga and anime-led studio co-founded by streaming icon Valkyrae and Range Media’s Kai Gayoso — has announced a partnership with start-up Otherly Productions, a next-generation studio reimagining how original franchises are created, launched, and scaled for today’s audiences. The first of their collaborations is Bad Influence, a high-energy, emotionally-raw sci-fi thriller set in a world of candy-colored lies, illustrated by the Barcelona-based artist Jor Ros and co-written by Orson James and Roman Calais. The first three episodes of Bad Influence are available as a Webtoon Original, with subsequent episodes dropping every Thursday. Readers have the option to unlock up to three additional episodes using Webtoon’s Fast Pass feature.

In Bad Influence, the city of Weisshorn is a surveillance city, where life is a never-ending parade–literally. Mascots smile from every screen, propaganda loops in cheery jingles, and the people are kept docile by distraction. At the center of it all is Oswald, a charismatic dictator with a showman’s flair and a deep need to control the story everyone lives inside.

The series follows the adventures of Nel — a hot-headed and haunted young woman, who isn’t buying the dream sold to the masses. Nel joins a rebel gang to take the system down. But the deeper she digs, the weirder it gets. She unearths glitches, ghosts, and truths that no one wants uncovered. Reality’s falling apart. And Nel might be next.

Check out the exclusive commentary and art below and check out Bad Influence now!

Here we’ve got our main character Nel coming face to face with some of Oswald’s mascots. They were inspired by 1940s cartoons, an amalgamation of early Disney and Hanna Barbera. The challenge was making them feel real and intimidating without crossing into full-on horror. Visually, we leaned into their cartoon roots, but when you cut them they bleed. They also know what they are, and that self-awareness makes them even weirder. Think Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but with way more menace.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman is Now Available on WEBTOON

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman

Manga hit From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman is available today on WEBTOON’s English-language platform. Adapted from the light novel of the same name, the manga has been reformatted for WEBTOON’s vertical scroll format and in full color.

From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman follows middle-aged swordsman Beryl Gardenant, who has only ever accomplished one thing: running a humble sword-fighting dojo in the quiet countryside. But when he’s paid a visit by his former pupil, Allucia, he discovers that she has become an elite commander — and she’s not the only one of his students who’s a renowned warrior. Forced by Allusia to become a special instructor to the strongest order of knights in the kingdom, Beryl must confront whether he’s able to reach his full potential, even as an old man.

The story began as a light novel written by Shigeru Sagazaki and illustrated by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima before it was adapted into a manga with art by Kazuki Sato and an anime that debuted on Prime Video in April 2025. The From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman manga is published and distributed by Yen Press in the United States.

Celebrating 10 years of Stephen McCranie’s Space Boy

In 2015, Webtoon hosted its first talent search contest in which cartoonist Stephen McCranie entered the beginnings of his work on his coming-of-age sci-fi opera, Space Boy. Since winning that contest, the Space Boy webcomic has continued its run, garnering almost 500,000 readers, over 91 million views, over 350 episodes, and has been collected by Dark Horse into 20 volumes so far, with more on the way.

David Shinook Lee, Webtoon advisor and previous editor on Space Boy, shares his favorite moments from Space Boy and also celebrates the series’ anniversary:

Space Boy was the winner of WEBTOON’s first global contest, and I’ll never forget the poignant scene where Amy, experiencing Earth for the first time, weeps at the sight of a bird in flight. It’s moments like these that explain why the series not only won our inaugural contest but has continued to resonate with so many space cadets over the past decade, enriching our lives with its joy and wisdom. On this 10th anniversary, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Stephen, a true pioneer and masterful storyteller.

McCranie shares his thoughts on the series’ lasting power:

Are we alone in the universe? Are we alone as we eat lunch in the school cafeteria? Space Boy is my attempt to answer both of those questions, not just for my audience, but for myself. After ten years of dialoguing with my characters, the answer we have uncovered so far is that you are not alone in feeling alone and that, wherever you are, love can cross light years to reach you.

And Dark Horse editor Brett Israel also adds:

Stephen’s work continues to be powerful and immersive throughout this run, and I cannot wait for what comes next (and I’m guessing it’ll make me tear up). Space Boy Volume 1 was one of the first projects I worked on in my time at Dark Horse, so I feel like I’ve been growing up professionally with this story. Congratulations to Stephen on this artistic achievement!

Space Boy Volumes 1-20 are now available wherever books are sold and volumes 21 and 22 are now available for preorder. Stay tuned for more Space Boy and, in the meantime, join Dark Horse in celebrating ten years of the beloved coming-of-age tale!
