Review: Vampblade #12

This is it!!! It’s time for our blade-wielding heroine to reveal another all-new costume… and conclude her first year as the other-dimensional space vampire huntress by night (and comic shop owner by day)! Will super-geek Katie Carva survive and continue on as the Vampblade, or will someone new pick up the mantle?!?

An epic battle concludes the first of volume of the frequently hilarious Vampblade. In the course of the battle, Katie/Vampblade realizes that Detroit is not the only place infected. Which does make one wonder how widespread it is. Given how this ends, volume two should be a blast to read.

The art is action packed, as things conclude in this first volume. There’s are various impressive sights in this issue that help enhance the action and humor.

The portal’s ending point appears to be technologically impressive. Which makes me wonder how much is yet to be revealed about the parasitic space vampires?

Review: Vampblade #11

As Katie’s search for the new Vampblade costume continues, will one giant blade give this warrior angel enough nerve to take on the latest and greatest other-dimensional foe?!? It’s Vampblade 2.0 – harder, faster, stranger!!!

Ah Vampblade, always a good, humorous and entertaining read. Katie manages to undergo a couple costume changes in this issue and an old bad guy returns, and seems to be more than he appears at first. Will Katie manage to survive the encounter with him, or will she perish? Writer Jason Martin continues to have fun with this series that is as much a send up of comics as anything else.

Katie trying to blend in with the 1% of the rich makes for an interesting sight to behold and artist Winston Young delivers the humor and entertainment in the art. Between the two costume changes in this issue, the anime-Esque one is my favorite (so far). It manages to give Katie/Vampblade a much more dangerous looking appearance. Not to mention one very badass looking sword.

Always a fun read and it never disappoints.

Review: Vampblade #10

vampblade_issuenumber10_covera_solicitKatie continues to “cosplay” her costume while making tiny pieces out of the hidden other-dimensional intergalactic parasites infesting Detroit. It doesn’t take the world’s greatest detective to see caped crusading never looked so… bootylicious!

Vampblade #10 may take the crown of fourth wall breaks for this series and that’s saying something. It’s almost like writer Jason Martin is taking it all as a challenge to one-up himself. Katie explores the origins of the original Vampblade comics, yet it flashes forward some, where Katie gets a new costume and a whole bunch of new information. The series continues to mix humor and action while having fun with the comic medium and history as a whole.

I will admit I do like the Batwoman-like costume with the slight Spawn mixture. Even the slight shift in art styles from artist Winston Young after the big fourth wall break works well. That slight shift gives the series a change in atmosphere.

And through everything, this series never loses its sense of humor.

Review: Vampblade #9

vampblade_issuenumber9_covere_solicitNow that Katie’s figured out she can control the appearance of the Vampblade costume, its time for an all new look inspired by one of her favorite comic books! She’s still got two blades and a thirst for TSD’s (translucent space d!@#s – aka space vampires), but now she’s rockin’ a crazy mercenary vibe too!! Features 3 regular and risqué variants showcasing the all new Vampblade costume!!

The humorous, violent, parody that is Vampblade continues. The issue brings in a new costume and a few more fourth wall breaks as things begin in what is the third story arc of this series. This issue gets to the heart of the theTSDs, as Katie tries to balance her real life and her life as Vampblade.

I will admit, I like the various costume she tries on. While the designs feel like they’re well known, they each have that Vampblade twist. Yet more TSDs appear in various forms, and shapes which also provides some variation to the design seen within. That includes a few twisted and grotesque looking creatures.

Vampblade continues to entertain with a mix of humor, action, and mixing things up.

Review: Vampblade #7

Vampblade_7 DIGITAL-3Katie Carva lives in Detroit, a tough town… it’s even tougher when you moonlight as Vampblade and hunt invisible demonic space parasites! But the blades need to feed, so it’s off to the rough side of town for some late night action.

Vampblade is always ready to break the fourth wall in some random, frequently hilarious way. Writer Jason Martin manages to continue that with a focus on gaming puns. It even goes so far as to change her armor some into a character that made the original X-Box succeed. Given how it ends, I’m curious to see how the series continues from here.

Despite taking almost entirely in a sewer system artist Winston Young makes the environment oddly bright. It is hard to tell if somehow the TSD creatures and her blades somehow cast light when they are used. There is clear evidence that the story and art are evolving in unison as things get more complex.
