NYCC 2015: Nickelodeon Brings TMNT to the Show

TMNTNickelodeon is bringing the heroes in a half shell to New York Comic Con and giving attendees an exclusive look at the hit animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Thursday, Oct. 8, during an hour-long panel where the voice cast and executive producers will reveal exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming fourth season.

Upon entering the convention center, fans will be greeted by Nickelodeon’s booth, which is inspired by the creativity and imagination streaming from the Nickelodeon Animation Studio. The booth showcases series like Pig Goat Banana Cricket, Harvey Beaks, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants and more.

Fans can also “Get Animated” with a special activation at the booth.  Nickelodeon teamed up with Nito to allow kids (and big kids) to “become” their favorite Nick characters. Step into the booth and voila – your movements and expressions are mimicked perfectly by SpongeBob, Arnold, Rocko, Korra, Harvey Beaks, and more!  You can take part in a real animated scene and will then be emailed a video to share.

Throughout the convention, TMNT’s Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo; SpongeBob SquarePants; and the Rugrats’ Tommy Pickles will be available for photos at the Nick booth.

On Thursday, October 8, Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles celebrity voice cast – Seth Green (Robot Chicken) as Leonardo, Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as Donatello, Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as Michelangelo, Hoon Lee (Banshee) as Splinter, and Eric Bauza (Breadwinners), along with executive producers Ciro Nieli and Brandon Auman will partake in a panel from 2pm to 3pm on Main Stage 1-D.

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #49

Welcome back shell heads! With only one issue to go till the big 50th issue spectacular, I wasn’t sure how this one was going to go. If I had to guess it was going to be all build up with the big melee taking place next month as we salivate impatiently. Well that was not at all what happened.

The issue opens up with Baxter Stockman and The Shredder ready to bask in the glow of the Turtles defeat only to find that they have become even stronger in numbers. Who is helping our heroes? None other than Shredder’s own ninja Foot Clan themselves. Stockman is livid and senses a double cross is afoot. (pun not intended) The Shredder realizing who has defied him, unceremoniously summons for his granddaughter Karai. However Karai is not present and she is confronting the Turtles. She tells them not to mistake her aid for mercy, as it would be dishonorable to watch them die at the hands of non warriors. Before they can thank her, she informs them that they will fight to the death here and now. (Sheesh, they would have been better off on their own)

They all get ready to throw down, when Splinter (Formerly leader of the Foot Clan, Hamato Yoshi) intervenes. While he applauds Karai on her sense of honor, he informs her that death this way would be dishonorable as well. He speaks of her grandfather, The Shredder and says the only way it should all end is between the two warriors once and for all. As her grandfathers blood and chunin (Ninja Field Commander), she agrees to consult him in person. She will take her enemies to him.

At this very moment we see that in a remote laboratory, Professor Honeycutt, is instructing his robotic assistant Fugitoid about the status of Donatello’s synthetic shell transplant. (Remember, thanks to Bebop and Rocksteady, Donnie’s physical body is on life support with his original shell destroyed) To the good professors dismay, Fugitoid does not share his sense of optimism. He informs Honeycutt that they are far too low on the special mutagen that is necessary to make the transplant complete. As this conversation is going on we see a big green hand with claws and a tail to emerge from the shadows holding a large vial of mutagen. My guess like probably a lot of long-term readers is that person is actually the Cajun alligator, Leatherhead. Is he friend or foe though? We will have to see.

Meanwhile at the Foot Clan’s Lair, the ultimate odd couple of Stockman and the Shredder are having a couples spat. The Shredder will have none of this insolence and prepares to smite Stockman, when Karai bursts in to save her grandfather. The Shredder then orders his ninja to seize her. (some gratitude there, pointy helmet)  She apologizes for her transgression, but that’s not all! She’s brought The Shredder’s worst enemies right to him in the heart of his secret lair. Before he can sentence his blood to death, Shredder is calmed down by his beloved and listens to her proposal. It’s very simple. The best of the Saki Clan (Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, Bludgeon and Koya) vs. the Yoshi Clan (Leonardo, Raphael, Michaelangelo, Metalhead and Splinter) in a battle royal to the death. Surprisingly it does not end there and we actually see a good one. (Won’t ruin here uh, uh you’ve got to read)

Overall: This issue had a lot of build up and a surprising amount of action too. It was well-balanced. There were noticeable changes in the art though and thought the Turtles didn’t look so great when they were posing, but was fine and fluid when in battle. The Shredder still looked amazing though. The creative team has been building to this for a long time now and the payoff promises to be big. Rumor is that one or even more of the Turtles could die. It has a big final showdown feel for sure. In the words of good Ol’ J.R. “This one is going to be a slobberknocker!”  One month is too long to wait, but lots digital pizza on me guys! See you in 30…

Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #48

This month its high-octane right out the gate as our beloved “heroes in a half shell” are under siege in their subterranean lair. The Stockman Swarm is closing in hot and fast and it’s getting dire. Leonardo, being the fearless leader that he’s always been, orders his brother and father to leave the quarters immediately. Since the swarms primary target is Splinter, the main priority is protecting the comatose body of their fallen brother Donetello above all else.

Raphael and Splinter make it quick to get out of dodge with Leo, while Mikey remains behind to protect his brother. Mikey assumes the battle ready when a robot Donetello (Metalhead) tells him there is no way they can remain there despite the damage to his real body. Donnie.. er Metalhead wants to keep all communications encrypted so he utilizes codenames: Kirbyfan01 (a nod to the late great King of Comic Books, Jack Kirby) and Duz_Machines 84 (recalling the creation date of the Ninja Turtles themselves). This was just a cool little in joke to long time comic fans like myself that I enjoyed greatly.

Continuing on with the action, we see two members of the police transporting the incarcerated Hun. Detective Lewis explains to her partner there is a lot of concern as he is a particularly dangerous individual. She warns him they need to keep their eyes open. Having said that, at that very moment the transport becomes under attack! A small band of Meta Mutants free Hun from his human captors and form an uneasy alliance with him. This will spell bad luck for the Turtles for sure.

tmnt48bMeanwhile, The Shredder is planning his next move as he plans to double cross Baxter Stockman once he outlives his usefulness. (Who couldn’t see that one coming?) All the pieces are soon to be in place for the ultimate revenge and Shredder wants a front row seat to the ultimate destruction of Hamato Yoshi and his green offspring. He intends to finish it once and for all.

Things are looking more dire by the second for Splinter and the Turtles as they leap from the frying pan of their sewer lair to the fire of the harbor. They fight off a mega horde of mousers and flybots to no avail as they are controlled by Stockman’s neural link and there seems to be an almost endless supply of them.

The remainder of the issue is the Turtles making their harrowing escape from certain doom and preparing for what’s to come.

Overall: While I didn’t enjoy this issue quite as much as last month’s, it was still pretty good overall. I loved the banter between Mikey and Donnie as his “Robo Bro”. Also seeing the Shredder of old back in rare form was a great sight. I know things are building and it’s so palpable you can taste it, I just wish we got a bigger piece this time around. Plus that retro style cover below is just freaking rad!

SDCC 2014: Diamond Select Toys Partners with Nickelodeon to Create New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Products

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are more popular today than ever before. The newest animated series on Nickelodeon is beloved by new and longtime fans alike, creating a diverse audience hungry for new stories, media and merchandise. With that audience in mind, Nickelodeon has partnered with Diamond Select Toys to create a similarly diverse array of toys and collectibles for fans of the hit franchise, with the first products debuting at San Diego Comic-Con.

“The depth of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise allows us to continue to create new products that will resonate with both new and loyal fans,” said Manuel Torres, Senior Vice President, Global Toys and Publishing, Nickelodeon Consumer Products.  “Partnering with Diamond Select Toys to create a variety of products is a perfect example of the momentum of the Heroes in a Half Shell.”

Comic-Con International in San Diego, which runs from July 24-28, will see the first physical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles products from Diamond Select, two translucent Minimates mini-figures of Leonardo and Michelangelo.  These products will be handed out for free (while supplies last) daily during the convention at the Diamond Select Toys booth (#2607) and Nickelodeon booth (#4113), respectively.

Products from several different categories will begin to hit stores in September, including:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Minimates Series 1: The cast of the animated series has been transformed into a series of 2 -inch block figures as part of the wide-ranging Minimates brand. Each figure in the line features interchangeable parts as well as their trademark weapons. Characters include the four Turtles, April O’Neil, Shredder, Foot Soldiers, Foot-Bot, Kraang and Exo-Armor Kraang and are available in blind bags and two-packs. Sold at comic shops, specialty stores, Kmart, Sears and Toys “R” Us.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vinyl Bust Banks: The four turtles will be re-created from the waist-up as full-color vinyl money banks. Striking action poses with their trademark weapons, each 7 inch bust is based on 3D data from the animated series, and will feature collectible-quality sculpting and paint, as well as a coin slot and access door. Sold at comic shops, specialty stores and Toys “R”Us.
  • Michelangelo Metal Bottle Opener: A classic image of Michelangelo enjoying a slice of pizza, taken from promotional artwork for the 1987 cartoon series, has been turned into a 3D metal bottle opener, with magnets on the back so it can be hung on any metal surface. Sold at comic shops and specialty stores.
  • Michelangelo Pizza Cutter: Michelangelo’s mind is always on pizza, and now his head will help slice it! This pizza cutter shaped like Michelangelo’s head is a must-have for any pizza party, Turtle-themed or otherwise. Sold at comic shops and specialty stores.
