Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Casey Jones gets a solo series!

Since making his unforgettable first appearance back in 1985’s Raphael micro issue from franchise co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, Casey Jones has skyrocketed in popularity and is undoubtedly one of the most beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) characters. Now, the fan-favorite hero who is known for wielding a hockey stick to fight crime is getting his very own series for the first time in more than 30 years.

IDW Publishing has announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones, arriving in stores this September. This action-packed comic book series brings the courageous character back to his roots from the critically acclaimed team of writer Alex Paknadel and artist Amancay Nahuelpan plus colorist Luis Antonio Delgado.

Now recovered after being shot within the pages of Jason Aaron and Juan Ferreyra’s best-selling TMNT ongoing series, Casey Jones has a second chance at life and he’s going all-out. The vigilante hero’s hitting the streets and doing everything he can to protect the people of New York City, but Raphael and April O’Neil are worried that he’s pushing himself too hard. Things will only get worse as a new strain of mutagen starts changing the landscape of the city and an all-new frightening villain threatens everything Casey believes in.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Casey Jones #1 (of 6 issues) is on sale Wednesday, September 10 with a pre-order deadline of Monday, August 4. In addition to Nahuelpan’s exciting cover, the debut issue will also feature incredibly cool variants by Danny Earls and Mike Henderson, plus a black and white variant of Earls’ cover and a sketch variant.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 delivers one hell of an issue

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7

The family reunion hasn’t exactly gone as planned for the Turtles. Even if they could put their sibling feuds aside, there’s no time for the brothers to celebrate. Hunted by a new Foot-enhanced police force led by the relentless D.A. Hieronymus Hale, the Turtle brothers must endure their worst gut-punch yet: New York City is no longer safe for the TMNT, forcing the mutant heroes to take drastic measures – relocating to the sewers of New Jersey! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 is another fantastic issue of a series that can’t be missed!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 is good, really good. It’s an issue that has you excited for what’s come before and what comes next. Action. Emotion. Twists. Turns. It’s a ride of an issue of a series that’s at the top of its game right now. Written by Jason Aaron, the Turtles are surrounded by a city that has been taken over by the Foot Clan and is focused on exterminating the Turtles. The brothers are disorganized and at each other’s throats fighting amongst themselves as much as taking on their foes. Further, the Foot Clan has gotten smart and using propaganda to turn opinion against the Turtles.

But, it’s the emotional punch that gets you. Aaron has tapped into something here, an aspect that I’ve never really experienced reading a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic. There’s been emotional moments but it’s hard to not read Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 and the previous issue and come away with sympathy for the brothers. There’s emotional pain for each of them and Donatello is a shell of the hero he once was. There’s a sadness underneath the anger.

The art by Juan Ferreyra is the icing and sprinkles on the cake. With lettering by Shawn Lee and design by Nathan Widick, the comic is a visual treat. The action feels frenetic and harrowing. The emotional moments are a punch to the gut. The comic can be summed up in how Donatello is depicted. The physical slump, the facial expressions, the emaciated look, it shows a level of detail that’s just fantastic. Add in some great page layouts and the combo is a comic that looks amazing to go along with a hell of a story.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 is another fantastic issue that picks up on the previous one and just goes to an even greater level. It’s one of the best ongoing series on the shelf right now and a series that should not be missed.

BLENDJET’s TMNT portable blender will have you breaking out smoothies like a ninja

BLENDJET’s TMNT portable blender

Licensed products hold a curious place in nerdom, specifically because they act as flags that signal our love of something. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is perhaps one of the most treasured licenses for this. Their toys, movies, and countless other products have become a staple of childhood memories. One way or another, you’ll grow up with something bearing the TMNT name.

Blendjet is the latest company to further that mission with their new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Blendjet 2 portable blender. It’s a light, easy to carry, and USB-rechargeable blender that lets you make smoothies on the go. It’s a powerful machine (retailing as of the time of this writing at $49.99) that can crush ice, mix it in with fruit and liquids, and produce a drink in some 20 seconds, give or take. One charge should yield 15+ blends.

The blender functions as advertised. I’ve squeezed some 16-19 blends per charge and have tested all manner of frozen fruits to see how it holds up. Cleanup consists of adding water and soap and then pushing the button to let it, essentially, clean itself. Sometimes you still have to carefully clean the blades yourself to remove any leftover pieces of fruit, but for the most part it really does do the job on its own.

BLENDJET’s TMNT portable blender

Of course, what TMNT fans will be eager to know is if it looks cool enough to add to the collection. I’m happy to say it does, and it’s mostly owed to the careful approach to design. The blender comes in two styles: “Colorful Ninjas” and “Shredder’s Mind.” For what I consider to be obvious reasons, I went with Shredder’s Mind.

There really wasn’t much competition considering the machine’s sharp and powerful blades can easily remind users of the equally sharp and dangerously pointy baddie that’s been after the Turtles since the beginning. In essence, this portable blender is like having a small Shredder in your backpack ready to rip and tear through fruit for your smoothie drinking delight.

As stated earlier, it’s the care that went into designing the package that really stands out. The blender features a wraparound illustration of the Turtles with April O’Neil, Splinter, and Shredder hovering behind everyone set to a soft purple background that brings back memories of the 1980’s animated TMNT cartoon. It keeps things from feeling exclusively tied to the release of the Mutant Mayhem animation currently in theaters, feeding the nostalgia factor driving the product’s appeal.

BLENDJET’s TMNT portable blender

The circular lid is especially attractive. On its very top is an illustration of a classic pepperoni pizza pie, crisp enough to make it feel like a collectible all of its own. The lid itself is purple as well, keeping with the Shredder theme. It’s a nice detail that accentuates the TMNT spirit of the design. Blendjet truly put together a blender that wouldn’t look out of place in either the Turtles’ or Shredder’s costumes. It’s battle ready.

Fans of TMNT have good reason to get one of these if only for the sake of adding it to their collection. Knowing it’s also a beautifully put together machine that can blend a mean smoothie, though, is truly what makes it special. It captures the child-like excitement associated with the license and it looks sleek. It’s a great addition to any kitchen, but it begs to be taken out into the streets for a blend while on the move, or while jumping over rooftops. I hope the line expands to include styles specific to characters like April O’Neil and Casey Jones, but the two we have available are more than enough to warrant attention. Shredder himself would be proud.

SDCC 2023: Nickelodeon acquires the original 1987 animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

TMNT 1987

In advance of the Paramount Pictures release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem Mayhem, in theaters on August 2, Nickelodeon is expanding the beloved franchise again with the acquisition of the original 1987 animated Fred Wolf TMNT series (193 x 22-min episodes, 1987-1996).

Under the deal,Nickelodeon has acquired global rights to the storied series, which follows the adventures of the beloved characters—Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo—as they battle the Shredder, Krang and other villains and criminals. The series is slated to debut digitally later this month in the U.S., followed by Nickelodeon branded channels and digital platforms internationally.

The news was revealed during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2023. The Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon movie follows the Turtle brothers as they set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts after years of being sheltered from the human world. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Considered one of the most popular kids’ franchises, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a classic, global property created in 1984 by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. It first debuted as a successful comic book series and then became a hit animated TV show, a live-action television series and later spawned numerous blockbuster theatrical releases. The property is a global consumer products powerhouse, winning in every category that has hit shelves to date—with toys, apparel, video games, DVDs and more—and generating billions of dollars at retail.
