Pick of the Week – Superior Spider-Man #1

Out of all of the releases this week, it’s a pretty simple choice as to which would be the Pick of the Week. Superior Spider-Man #1 is the next step in Dan Slott‘s controversial Spider-Man tale which saw the “death” of Peter Parker and in his body, the consciousness of Doctor Octopus. We have had some teases as to what we can expect. a brilliant former villain who wanted to be loved by the people given his chance for redemption. There’s potential, lots of potential and having only started reading Spider-Man recently, I’m drawn in by Slott’s brilliant writing.  There’s also the added bonus of Ryan Stegman‘s art. I can’t wait to see what’s next and where we’re taken.

  • Superior Spider-Man #1 – see above
  • Star Wars #1 – Brian Wood doing Star Wars? Yes please! One of my favorite writers takes on the holiest of holy universes is potentially an amazing combination.
  • Supurbia #3 – I’ve loved Grace Randolph’s series which looks into the dysfunction of super heroes. For those that have seen the cover of this one, you know why it’ll be entertaining.
  • The Legend of Luther Strode #2 – The over the top violence is back and boy is it entertaining. That first issue ended with a bang and we’ll see where this second volume takes us.
  • The Strain #10 – Any other year, this vampire comic would be a contender for “best of” lists. It’s looking like it might be a television series, so best to start reading now and say you read it before it was cool.

Pick of the Week – Avengers Arena #1

I haven’t read Avengers Arena #1, but out of all of the comics being released as part of Marvel NOW!, this one has me the most intrigued. Take the Hunger Games, mix it with Battle Royal and add super heroes and villains and you have this series. Or at least that’s the concept that I understand. What this will actually be as far as quality, I really have no idea. But, as far as what comics I’m reading this week, Avengers Arena #1 is at the top of my “read” pile.

  • Avengers Arena #1 – see above
  • The Massive #7 – The best comic on the market and one of the best of the year. Comic of the year and new comic of the year potential, just saying.
  • Cable and X-Force #1 – What’s Cable up to in Marvel NOW!? Well, find out right here.
  • Point of Impact #3 – Law & Order, the comic book. This is an absolute buy for any fan of the television series.
  • Supurbia #2 – First issue rocked, I’m expecting no less from the second!

Review – Supurbia #1

One of my favorite mimi-series to come out in a while was Grace Randolph‘s Supurbia by BOOM! Studios. So, you can imagine my excitement when it was announced the series would be back as an ongoing series. But, the fear I had was if this new series could match the excellence of that too brief mini-series. Well, the first issue matches that high hurdle.

Meet the Meta Legion, the world’s foremost faction of crime-fighting capes. But what happens when the masks come off and the heroes are faced with the sordid problems of everyday life in the suburbs? That’s the idea behind this series which is part Justice League and part daytime soap opera. Do you want the hero who is hiding a former villain from being brought to justice? Check. Will he and her get caught? Check. How about a super hero and his sidekick getting a bit closer than fighting crime? Check. What about another villain in their midst? Check.

This is a daytime soap in comic form, with all of the cattiness and hair pulling you’d expect. Less fighting bad guys! More fighting each other’s bitchiness! The series is fantastic, with so many different plot threads picking up from the mini-series, but laid out in a way that you don’t need to read what’s come before (but you should!).

The art by Russell Dauterman is solid matching the fun tone of the comic series somehow creating a style crossing a fun action comic with a humor comic. It works really well and is a good team up.

The series is unique in it’s twist, perspective and execution that’ll appeal to a broad swatch of comic fans. Do yourself a favor and pick up not just this first issue, but the trade of the mini-series that’s come before.

Pick of the Week – Bravest Warriors #2

This week has many solid comics, but one is standing above the rest for me, Bravest Warriors #2. The kaBOOM! Studios series based off of the new Pendleton Ward cartoon is so beyond wrong and off the wall, it’s just amazing. I’ve never read or seen his more famous creation, Adventure Time, but this series makes me want to go back and check it out.

The series follows a team of adventurers taking over for their parents who are AWOL. This comic might look like something for kids, but boy is it not. The first issue had me laughing out loud numerous times, I’m expecting no less for the second issue.

When a series has me talking incessantly about it, you know it’s something special. Do yourself a favor and go grab the first two issues. Check out the rest of the top five comics.

  • Bravest Warriors #2 – see above
  • Princeless: Short Stories for Warrior Women #1 – The praised series deserves it’s accolades. The brilliant comics take traditional fairy tale tropes and turn them on their head, but it also stars and African American lead. A great comic for kids and especially young female comic fans. But, don’t let that fool you, it’s a comic series as smart for adults as it is fun for kids.
  • Supurbia #1 – The first volume of this series from BOOM! Studios was too short, luckily we now have an ongoing series to enjoy. The comic is an adult take on super hero teams and boy is it a doozy.
  • Captain America #1 andIndestructible Hulk #1 – How can you not mention the latest first issues from Marvel NOW!?
  • Judge Dredd #1 – I only know a little about Judge Dredd, so this new series by IDW is on the top of my pile to check out.
