Review: Suicide Risk #1, Bravest Warriors #8, Supurbia #7

Suicide Risk #1

SuicideRisk_01_preview_Page_1Super-powered people are inexplicably rising from the streets and there’s a big problem: Too many supervillains, not enough superheroes. Heroes are dying, and cops are dying twofold. Humanity is under-powered and good people are suffering untold tragedies trying to stem the flow. Beat cop Leo Winters is one of those struggling to make a difference. And the answer just might come in the form of two lowlifes with a dark secret.

I’ve enjoyed Mike Carey’s previous work on X-Men and The Unwritten so his name on a new series immediately catches my interest. When I heard this was about a cop thrown into a world of superheroes and supervillains my mouth salivated a bit. To few comics where we get to see the impact of having these powered individuals running around on the average person. The concept of cops dealing with the issue is underused and one I’ve wanted more of since Gotham Central.

I cracked open this first issue and was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The comic has not only action and what feels like real world stakes, it also includes more than enough to make these characters actual people. They aren’t stereotypes, they’re fleshed out characters with families, relationships and feelings.

A first issue is supposed to hook you in and want you to come back for more. It’s supposed to get you interested in the world, entertain and give you some idea as to what’s going on. This one does so and more. I felt like I was reading an awesome pilot for a television series that should be made (but never will since good ideas like this don’t make it on tv). I love the idea of Law & Order mashed together with capes and powers. This seems to be it.

I’m not sure this will replace Gotham Central, but with the first issue, it seems like it might be a worthy successor.

Bravest Warriors #8

BravestWarriors_08_preview_Page_01The most nefarious force in the universe has finally followed through with its plan to steal brains through an alien beauty pageant! Can the Warriors stop it with POWER and RESPECT? The final issue of the arc, and the final Nick Edwards connecting B cover!

How much can I praise Bravest Warriors? Eight issues in, and I find myself laughing with each and everyone. Just when I think it can’t get funnier, it gets weirder… and funnier. While the art might make you think this is a series aimed at kids, its humor is subversive and actually adult. The comic is one of a growing amount of stories aimed not just at kids, but also their parents.

This issue is the final of the latest story arc involving stealing brains and a beauty pageant. It’s conclusion is just out there and crazy and I loved every minute of it.

I can only describe the issue and series as an action-comedy, with this one leaning more on the side of punching of faces.

We not only get the end of this story arc, but a back-up story that’s just as out there and shows how the series blends humor for both adults and kids as it can be taken and enjoyed in numerous ways.

Supurbia #7

Supurbia_07_preview_Page_1Tia and Batu battle the Daughters of Bright Moon as they attempt to escape Mongolia… Helen’s corruption of Sara reaches a turning point… Hector Hunt’s devious jailbreak is enacted during the chaos of the Weapons Expo… And Gio uncovers secrets that stretch all the way back to Supurbia Vol.1 #1!

I’ve never been much of a fan of soap operas. Where lots of my friends in college and after still dig the daytime soaps or their night-time cousins, it’s never been my thing. I can say though, I’m a huge fan of this comic series which is a soap opera with tights and powers.

Writer Grace Randolph has been building the series and dropping reveals and bombs like you’d expect on your favorite television shows. Its pacing and storylines are fun and entertaining, you never know what will happen next.

Sex, violence, double crosses, cheating, family issues, fighting, it’s all here, just like the classic soaps. This issue has things that reference the first volume which seems like it was ages ago. Something that’s great for long-time readers and shows that Randolph isn’t in any hurry to rush through storylines.

I’ve been championing this series since its first volume which launched a fresh idea in a fun package. This second volume has taken that ball and run with it. Do yourself a favor and pick up the first volume if you haven’t, I guarantee you’ll be hooked. It’s not too late to dive in and get into this capes and tights series that mixes action with drama.

Picks of the Week: The Movement #1 and 12 more!

The Movement #1 coverReally the picks this week should be all of the awesome comic books being released for Free Comic Book Day this Saturday… but, when it comes to comics for sale, The Movement #1 is our pick for this week.

We are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive.

Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT?

When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK.

Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED.

We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.

Writer Gail Simone and artist Freddie Williams II take on the 99% within the DC Universe.

  • The Movement #1 – see above
  • The Activity #12 – The heart pounding series is flying under the radar. It’s kick-ass covert action from America’s kick-ass military teams. This issue focuses on one of the character’s previous stint in Delta Force.
  • Age of Ultron #7 – I’ve generally been down on this event, but the last issue kicked it up a notch with some actual action and story movement. After the actions of last issue, I have no idea what to expect now.
  • All-New X-Men #11 – One team member has left to join Cyclops and lets see how the rest react.
  • Charismagic Vol. 2 #1 – Part of Aspen’s “10 for 10” means a $1 issue of the debut issue of the second volume of this excellent series.
  • Fubar: American History Z – This alternative American history is full of zombie goodness. An awesome indie comic series.
  • Hawkeye #10 – This is one of the best series out there people, now read it!
  • Invincible Universe #2 – Want a solid super hero series not by the big two? Well, here you go.
  • Polarity #2 – The first issue knocked it out of the park dealing with a bi-polar artist. A solid debut, so get into it while you can!
  • The Red Ten #3 – Ten Little Indians done with super heroes. Yes please. Another awesome indie comic.
  • Suicide Risk #1 – A new ongoing by Mike Carey sees a cop take on super powered villains.
  • Superior Spider-Man #9 – Dan Slott has me enjoy Spider-Man, which is impressive. One of my favorite Marvel NOW! comics.
  • Ten Grand #1 – It’s the return of Joe’s Comics with a new series by J. Michael Straczynski and Ben Templesmith involving a mob enforcer who wants to be with his love.

BOOM! Studios launches Mike Carey’s Suicide Risk this May

SuicideRisk_01_CVRThis May, BOOM! Studios proudly launches Suicide Risk, the first original ongoing series from an independent publisher by Eisner Award-nominated author Mike Carey. The highly anticipated series will feature interiors by artist Elena Casagrande.

Super-powered people are inexplicably rising from the streets and there’s a big problem: Too many supervillains, not enough superheroes. Heroes are dying, and cops are dying twofold. Humanity is under-powered and good people are suffering untold tragedies trying to stem the flow. Beat cop Leo Winters is one of those struggling to make a difference. And the answer just might come in the form of two lowlifes with a dark secret. Suicide Risk is a high octane, mind-bending series created by one of the industry’s greatest storytellers.

“Suicide Risk is  a story set against the backdrop of the world’s first ever superpower activations – a fast-spreading trend with a single moving source and a million unintended consequences,” explained Mike Carey. “When cop Leo Winters goes looking for a man and a woman who are literally selling superpowers on the street, he triggers a series of events which will change his life and the lives of those he loves forever – and potentially, end the world.  What I love about writing this book (I mean, besides working with Elena) is that it’s outside of any existing continuity.  We can make our own rules and then play out the consequences all the way.”

Suicide Risk #1 will arrive in stores on May 1st with with a cover by Tommy Lee Edwards and a retail price of $3.99 under Diamond order code of MAR130918. The premier issue will also feature a retailer incentive cover by Stephanie Hans.
