The CBLDF Presents: Elephantmen: Shots

Image Comics and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) join forces once again to bring readers an Elephantmen one-shot collection in Shots #1, written by Richard Starkings and drawn by Dougie Braithwaite, Ian Churchill, Boo Cook, Shaky Kane, Moritat, Tim Sale, and Dave Sim. The proceeds of this book will go toward helping protect the First Amendment rights of comics creators, publishers, and retailers.

Led by Tim Sale’s nine-page “When the Night Comes,” this special Elephantmen: Shots #1 collects all the Elephantmen strips from Hero Comics, Liberty, and The Thought Bubble Anthology. The collection also features the hard-to-find Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, and Marine Man crossovers and beautiful covers by J. Scott Campbell and Tim Sale!

All proceeds earned from Elephantmen: Shots #1 will go toward supporting the CBLDF’s important work defending the rights on which our community depends.

In a release Starkings said:

I’m sure I wasn’t the only comic book creator affected by the Charlie Hebdo massacre earlier this year. It was a deeply shocking and terrifying event that sent ripples throughout the cartooning world. It really made me realize the importance of supporting organizations like the CBLDF, who stand vigilant for cartoonists whether there’s a traumatic event capturing our attention or not. I counted up the strips that we’d produced for The Hero Initiative, Thought Bubble and, of course CBLDF’s own Liberty Annual and decided that, rather than do nothing but worry, I could put out a special issue of Elephantmen to benefit the CBLDF. Eric Stephenson at Image Comics agreed and… voila!

Elephantmen: Shots #1 arrives in stores on May 27.

That’s Because You’re A Robot, a science-fiction warning

Coming from Image Comics this June, BAFTA winner and writer on HBO’s award winning Veep David Quantick teams up with legendary comics artist Shaky Kane on the migraine-inducing Pop Art, Cop-Buddy one-shot That’s Because You’re A Robot.

Two cops patrol a near-future Los Angeles together in an oversized patrol car, and one of them is a robot—but we don’t know which!

In a release Quantick described what we can expect:

Welcome to a world where identity is uncertain, the definition of humanity is open to question and there is an evil giant leprechaun who can fly. “Welcome to That’s Because You’re a Robot.

Kane further described the mix of styles in That’s Because You’re A Robot.

Imagine Car 54 Where Are You? channeled through Philip K Dick’s cryogenically preserved brain, broadcast via the first Pye color television set with the color turned up to full retina burn. If you did, you’d get something close to That’s Because You’re a Robot… but not that close.

That’s Because You’re A Robot arrives in stores on 6/11 and will be available for $3.99. It can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code APR140504.

CBLDF Announces Liberty Annual 2011!

Official Press Release

FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM!
Support CBLDF With The Industry’s Greatest Creators in CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 from Image Comics

Berkeley, CA & New York, NY – 8 August 2011 United We Stand Against Censorship! That’s the message from Image Comics, over two dozen of the industry’s greatest creators, and our friends at DC Comics and Marvel Comics, who have all banded together to deliver the greatest CBLDF benefit comic yet — CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011!

Famed comics editor Bob Schreck, Editor-in-Chief of Legendary Comics, and Assistant Editor Greg Tumbarello view censorship as the ultimate form of bullying and have gathered an all-star team of comics creators to tell powerful stories that take a stand against censorship. CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 comprises 48 powerful pages of all new stories and art. The proceeds from the sale of the book benefit the ever-important First Amendment work of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Schreck declares, “It’s an honor to be asked to edit LIBERTY ANNUAL! We wanted to show the human side of what it means to be censored, and we’re elated with how many powerful and heartfelt tales were delivered. With an American facing prosecution in Canada for the comics he reads, the work that CBLDF does is more important now than ever, and the CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL is essential tool in the fight against censorship.”

CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 collects incredible contributions, including original stories by superstars J. Michael Straczynski (Superman: Earth One), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman), J.H. Williams III (Batwoman), Steve Niles (30 days of Night), Judd Winick (Catwoman), Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth), and Carla Speed McNeil (Finder). Look for all-new tales featuring Grendel by Matt Wagner, Cowboy Ninja Viking by AJ Lieberman and Riley Rossmo, and Elephantmen by Richard Starkings and Shaky Kane. Plus: a massive and first-ever full-color story from independent comics master Craig Thompson (Blankets)! Marvel and DC Comics have stepped up to show their support, with all-new pin-ups of Batman by Dustin Nguyen, X-Men by Greg Land, Green Lantern by Ivan Reis, and the Avengers by Greg Horn! It’s all topped off by incredible covers by John Cassaday, Matt Wagner, and two variant covers by Frank Quietly: a full-color, 1 in 25 cover, and a black and white, 1 in 50 cover!

“Bob’s experience as an editor is hard to beat, and we’re proud to have him at the helm,” says CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein. “Bob made a book that has something to say, without being sentimental or preachy. He’s made a comic we can all be proud of, and that will go a long way towards advancing the CBLDF’s important work.”

Image Comics Publisher Eric Stephenson says, “It should go without saying that free speech is one of our most fundamental rights as citizens of this great country. Our right to free expression is challenged on a daily basis, though, and sometimes, those challenges occur within the comics world. Without the diligence of organizations like the CBLDF, everyone in the comics community would be much worse off. There are always bullies out there trying to keep people from enjoying the rights we’re all entitled to, but thankfully there are also people willing to stand up for those rights. I’m proud that Image is able to lend a hand.”

Join the fight against censorship by picking up your copy of CBLDF LIBERTY ANNUAL 2011 (AUG110415), a 48-page full color comic book benefiting the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, available from Image Comics on October 12, 2011, for $4.99.
