Review: Atomic Robo GN Everything Explodes Collection

Atomic Robo Everything ExplodesAs any parents out there know, teaching children how to read or even getting them interested in reading books can be daunting. Naturally, I follwoed my dad’s lead , remembering how he got me into reading, through the comic store. This is the place where I first met Sgt. Rock, Firestorm, Unknown Soldier, Iron Man, Daredevil, War Machine, Black Panther, and many others, a whole new world to five year old me. I did the same for my daughters, naturally they ran to the kids’ comics books , like Adventure Time and Gumball, but eventually they graduated to more mature titles, or really titles that were at their intelligence level like Ms. Marvel and Saga.

Suffice to say, me and my daughters have vastly different tastes in comics, as well as they have different tastes from each other. So there really is not too many comics other than Deadpool, that we all like. Then together we found Atomic Robo. Basically for newcomers, the story is about Atomic Robo, a self-aware robot built by a fictitious version of Nikola Tesla, reliving the different eras and adventures in Atomic Robo’s long life. We found back issues of it at a comic convention, and instantly fell in love with the series, as it was fun, quirky, and adventurous and action packed, as it was one comic that we all enjoyed together. Since that first find, it has been increasingly hard to find it in print, as the trade paperbacks, are sold by retailers at higher than market prices, as the only solace is that the creators put the series up on their website as a web comic.

Then I read that IDW Publishing was going to publish them and re-release the trade paperbacks in two omnibus editions, the first which was released this week. This first collection highlights some of his most memorable adventures, as the first set that was collected highlights his first trip to Mars, his most famous fights against his arch nemesis, Helsingard, and what has the craziest fight, a walking pyramid. The second volume, which was my favorite, delves into his adventures during WWII, fighting German walking tanks and teaming up with British spies. The last collection in this omnibus dives into Robo’s fights with a creature, right out of Lovecraft, which he actually faces off in different times of his life.

Overall, a great series, as this collection, brings together, some of Atomic Robo’s greatest adventures. The stories by Brian Clevinger, stands out in the best way possible as it brings together, nostalgia and adventure at its’ zenith. The art by Scott Wegener is both nostalgic and futuristic simultaneously. This omnibus is basically a steal of epic proportions, as you not only have great storytelling and great art, but also this series is once in a lifetime, and at $39.99, at 466 pages, everyone needs to get this.

Atomic Robo Heads to the Web Starting Wednesday

Atomic Robo Ghost of Station X #1 CoverRight now it’s hip to bring webcomics to print, but starting this week Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener‘s Atomic Robo is heading to the web. After seven years, the fantastic comic that doesn’t get enough love from folks is heading to being a full-time webcomic. You can find it starting this Wednesday 21 at Atomic-Robo.com.

The whole run, all nine volumes, will be online for free, and build to the tenth volume Atomic Robo and the Ring of Fire which should be released this Summer. That means not only will all future volumes be readable on the web, but also means thousands of pages of the existing material will be available for free too.

The entire first volume goes up on Wednesday, followed by a Monday/Wednesday/Friday update schedule. That’s full issues being put up three times a week.

Collected editions will remain in print and through digital services like comiXology. The material will be online first and then collected later for those who want it like that.

Reached for comment, Clevinger confirmed that the collected editions of Robo will remain in print and available through ComiXology: “New material will be free online first and collected into issues/trades through ComiXology for folks who wants ‘em like that. We’ll also print the new stuff as trades as, y’know, they get finished.”

The first volume, Atomic Robo and the Fightin’ Scientists of Tesladyne, will be available  this Wednesday.

Review – Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X #1

Bookmark and Share

Atomic Robo Ghost of Station X #1 CoverI’ve read some Atomic Robo comics here and there, but those were mostly Free Comic Book Day ones or if the character had some pages in an anthology.  So, Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X #1 is the first time I’ve really begun to read a series with the character from the beginning and I must say, I’ve been missing a great character and comic.

I’d describe this as pulp entertainment for kids.  It reminds me a lot of earlier comics where the good guy takes part in an over the top adventure with crazy creatures or strange worlds.  It’s fun that’s to be enjoyed and not really thought through.

There are two kinds of people. Those who love Atomic Robo and those who haven’t read it yet. What’s that? You don’t want to start on the sixth volume? Well, GOOD NEWS! Every volume is stand alone. BOOM. You can start with this one and know what’s going on from page one. KA-BOOM. Then go back and read the other volumes in any order. THWACKA-BOOM. Oh, a plot? Okay, fine. Astronauts are stranded in a deteriorating orbit, and it’s up to Atomic Robo to save them in a race against the laws of physics!

Robo has to head to space and save astronauts and most of the issue is focused on getting him there.  We don’t know what the cause of the issue is, or what the “bad guy” will be, but there’s a problem and the issue is the thought process of a team thinking about how to solve the issue of getting Robo to space.  There’s a mix of action and humor about it and the pacing kept me engaged.

The comic was a lot of fun to read and the solution they come up with is over the top and just fits the campy pulp feel of a comic.  This first issue is easily a comic that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids, and it feels great to say that.  I can’t wait for next month and some more Robo action and definitely need to go back and see what I’ve been missing.
