Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing finds a partner with Skybound

Skybound, Image Comics, and Scott Dunbier’s Act 4 Publishing have announced a multi-year, worldwide distribution deal that names Skybound as Act 4’s publishing partner, with launch titles arriving in Fall 2025.

Scott Dunbier, the visionary behind the industry-changing Artist’s Edition format, has spent decades redefining what comics publishing can be and how comics can be presented. Truly fostering the connection between artists, stories, and readers, an Artist’s Edition is an art book disguised as a comic collection. Although appearing to be in black and white, all the art is scanned in color, enabling the reader to see the work as close to the original as possible – ink gradients, blue pencil, and all the unique nuances that make original art so special – are all clearly visible, all printed at the same size as drawn. The only better way to experience these pages is to stand behind an artist’s drawing board as they draw.

Skybound and Act 4’s publishing partnership will span products including Artist’s Edition hardcover books, single issue comics and series collections, and Connoisseur Editions, a new deluxe hardcover format. The Connoisseur Edition is a brand-new format developed by Act 4 featuring a slipcase and premium finishing, collecting a complete comics series in an oversized, readable format. This format promises to transport the reader back to childhood, where they are completely immersed in the world on the page, reading a book in a larger-than-life format.

The first releases in this distribution deal will be Jim Aparo’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition and Darwyn Cooke’s The Complete Spirit Connoisseur Editioncoming in September and October 2025, respectively.

Future releases within the publishing partnership include J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl Artist EditionDave Stevens’ Covers and Stories’ Connoisseur EditionJason Pearson’s Body Bags Artist’s Edition, Paul Smith’s Leave It to Chance Artist’s Edition, and EC Comics Artist’s Editions. Publishing details for these books will be announced in the coming months.

Announcements of both additional formats and deals with other publishers and creators will be forthcoming.

Coming September 2025, experience the peak period of Jim Aparo’s artistry from his runs featuring Batman (Brave and the BoldDetective Comics) and The Spectre (Adventure Comics), with over 175 pages of original art in Jim Aparo’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition. This gorgeous hardcover presents classic Aparo art from what is regarded as his peak period and features eight stories, including four complete The Brave and the Bold stories, four complete Adventure Comics issues featuring The Spectre, as well as a selection of classic covers and pages.

Then, in October 2025, leap into the crime-ridden, two-fisted tales of Darwyn Cooke’s The Spirit, featuring Will Eisner’s most famous creation, now collected in its entirety for the first time in this oversized collectible edition, presented within a beautiful slipcase. This edition is designed by Sean Phillips, who also oversaw the Eisner-winning Richard Stark’s Parker: The Martini Edition – Last Call, to which this book is a companion in size and scope. J. Bone, Cooke’s long-time collaborator, provides an introduction.

Also included in this definitive version of Cooke’s The Spirit is a gallery featuring all the covers, two variant covers from a Rocketeer/The Spirit crossover, and several never-before-seen drawings. Collects The Spirit #1-6, #8-12, and the Batman/The Spirit one-shot.

Jim Aparo’s DC Classics Artist’s Edition (978-1-5343-3487-8 | SRP $150.00) will be available atcomic book shops on Wednesday September 17, 2025 and at booksellers on Tuesday September 30, 2025.

Scott Dunbier departs IDW to launch his own publishing company

Scott Dunbier

It’s a new venture for Scott Dunbier who has announced that not only is he leaving IDW Publishing but will be launching his own publishing company later this year.

In his departure letter, he mentioned he has two jobs in the past 29 years, with IDW and Wildstorm and his leaving is his decision alone. He had been the Special Projects Editor for IDW for the past 16 years and he is well known for his work on IDW’s Artist’s Editions which he is credited with inventing.

He has dipped his toes into self publishing having crowdfunded two projects, both raising over $175,000. Comics: For Ukraine: Sunflower Seeds and John Paul Leon’s The Winter Men Artist’s Edition were both launched on Zoop as fundraisers and you can purchase the Ukraine book through the Zoop store. Can we expect more of this in the future?

You can read Dunbier’s full post below:

Hello Everyone,

First, let me once thank everyone for the incredible support I have received since announcing I would be leaving IDW Publishing after 16 years. It was a tough choice, in the past 29 years I have had two jobs, first at Wildstorm Productions (later DC/Wildstorm), then at IDW. I do not make changes like this lightly.

A couple of things I would like to say.

Leaving IDW was my decision alone. I will always have a soft spot for the company that has been my home for so long. I will miss most of my former co-workers a great deal. The work they do is outstanding, and I care enormously for them. But it was time to go.

As of today, I am excited for the future. I have decided to do something that may be a bit crazy, I will be starting my own publishing company. I will not speak direclty about my publishing plans, or even divulge the name of my company. In the weeks to come I will be filing paperwork to create it and I will periodically update via social media.

My goal is to announce my fist books, assuming things go as planned, at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

More soon.

All the best,
Scott Dunbier
Unemployed Editor

Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer takes flight again in a new one-shot

Dave Stevens’ two-fisted triumph soars again at IDW Publishing with the May release of The Rocketeer one-shot, an anthology of three tales by an astonishing assemblage of comic-industry heavyweights!

The development of this new Rocketeer comic project began during the making of the documentary Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection, when filmmaker Kelvin Mao discovered that Danny Bilson and the late Paul De Meo, the original screenwriters of the 1991 The Rocketeer film, had written an unpublished Rocketeer comic book story guest starring aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart some years earlier. Mao, along with the film’s executive producer Robert Windom, approached superstar Adam Hughes to illustrate the tale, and the project evolved into a celebratory one-shot anthology edited by Scott Dunbier.

The Rocketeer one-shot includes an eight-page story by Bilson, De Meo, and Hughes; a 12-page story of Cliff Secord’s date night with Betty leading to trouble with a vaguely familiar adventurer/archeologist, written by Mao, drawn by Craig Cermak, and colored by award-winning Laura Martin; a four-page story of the Rocketeer fighting a Japanese Zero in the South Pacific, written by Robert Windom, drawn by the fan favorite Jae Lee, and colored by June Chung; pinups by Phil Noto and Maria Laura Sanapo; and more!

The Rocketeer one-shotwill be available in comic book stores in May with several variant covers for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by Adam Hughes, Cover B by Locke & Key artist extraordinaire Gabriel Rodríguez, and two special retailer incentive “Full Art” variants of the Hughes and Rodríguez art respectively.

Hero Initiative has Six Exclusive Guests at Baltimore Comic-Con

Hero Initiative

Hero Initiative, the charity that helps comic book creators in medical or financial need, will host six amazing creators at its booth, #1501, at the 2022 Baltimore Comic-Con, October 28-30, 2022 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Tickets can be purchased online now.

Ann Nocenti will be appearing Friday and Saturday, October 28-29 only.

Richard Pace resides in Toronto, Canada, looking down upon the Americans to the south with moments of both humor and dread. From this perch, he has deployed his illustration skills on titles for Vertigo and Marvel, has also co-written Dale Keown’s Pitt and Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham, and is the co-creator, with Mark Russell, of the hit indie AHOY Comics series Second Coming.

Dexter Vines was born and raised in Atlanta GA and is one of comics most prolific and well-respected artist inkers in the business with over 25 years of experience. Dexter has worked for almost every major comic publisher over his long career.
