Review: Savage #3

On a mysterious island seemingly untouched by time, order is about to give way to instinct. Stranded with no hope of rescue, the Sauvage family must sacrifice the people they once were…and embrace the animals within! But as prehistoric monsters stalk them at every turn, will their newfound bestialness be enough to ensure survival, or will they be forever trapped at the bottom of the food chain? And when tragedy befalls the once close-knit family, will their last tether to humanity be severed once and for all?

When I was in my LCS this morning picking this book up (although this review is based off the PDF copy Valiant provided), the owner and I were talking about Savage and how the direction of the story was a little unclear – is it building to something that will eventually connect to the wider Valiant Universe, or is this simply a four issue story about the loss of humanity on a remote island populated with dinosaurs?

What was interesting, at least to me, is that up until this point I had never actually had a conversation with her about Valiant’s comics that didn’t end with her saying “I really need to read more Valiant, because that sounds cool.” Whether Savage, written by B. Clay Moore with art by Clayton Henry and Lewis Larosa with colors provided by Brian Reber and Andrew Dalhouse, will tie into the greater Valiant universe at some point in the future, or whether it will remain a standalone property, remains to be seen. The story being told in this comic is on the surface very simple and straight forward, but the more we learn about the young Savage’s origin as Moore divides the comic between the past and present, the more we understand the tragedy of his present.

As tragic as the comic feels, however, it’s wonderfully eye catching with Larosa and Dalhouse the art team on the present, and Henry and Reber handling the past. The comic is as beautiful as it is brutal.

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Top Pick: Batman/TMNT Adventures # 3 (DC Comics/ IDW Publishing) – This comic just plainly rocks! It’s the best of both worlds. I love how well the creative team has captured the spirit and feel of Batman: The Animated Series as well as keeping the Turtles timeless in their incarnation. Very pumped for the Joker/ Shredder feud. This has just been radical!!

Detective Comics #949 (DC Comics) – One more issue to go until the big 950 celebration! This book has been on such a roll though, I’m not even noticing the mile stone. Such a stark contrast to the snooze fest going on over in the regular Batman monthly title. I am loving how Kate Kane is getting the spotlight here and I’m very much looking forward to this springboarding her into the new Batwoman title next month. Finally Bruce has an ally that feels like a true equal and not one of his students. Hey, who better than family right?

Reborn # 4 (Image Comics) – This tale between Millar and Capullo is just a breath of fun. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of story or newness but it entertaining as all get out. The art is stellar as always and I could see this as an animation property. Very cool take on the entire idea of reincarnation. This won’t have a long journey but I’m sure here for the ride.

Top Pick: The Dregs #1 (Black Mask Studios) – A comic tackling gentrification, homeless people confined in one area and what happens when a homeless man decides to help solve the mystery of the disappearing “invisible” population of a city divided. I’m here for it !

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #6 (DC Comics) – The end of this arc could have one team destroyed or they could join forces to create the super team that we all deserve .

Hulk #2 (Marvel) – Jen is still trying to sort it all out while returning to work and it’s getting harder to control the green beast of rage within.

Suicide Squad #10 (DC Comics) – A bonus epilogue to the JL v SS comic arc finds Amanda trying to break through and reconcile the wreckage of her dark secrets.

Top Pick: Divinity III: Stalinverse #2 (Valiant) – I’m like a kid in a candy store with this series; I bloody love everything about this alternate history version of the Valiant universe. To be honest, I’ve already read the comic – and it’s good – but I’m looking forward to seeing the artwork on the printed page.

Bloodshot USA #4 (Valiant) – The conclusion to Valiant’s version of a zombie story with nanomachines infecting civilians. It’s been a surprisingly strong story so far, but the only thing keeping this from my top spot is Jeff Lemire’s tendency to set up the next arc midway through a concluding chapter. Sometimes I want a self contained story…

Hulk #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was easily the best Marvel comic I’ve read in a long time.

Savage #3 (Valiant) – I could just copy what I wrote about Divinity III #2 here with some slight adjustments, but that’d be lazy (almost as lazy as not writing anything else).

Top Pick: Dead Inside #2 (Dark Horse) – I’m a sucker for crime comics and this murder mystery within a prison has been fascinating so far. The art is solid, writing entertaining and engaging, it’s a complete package.

Animosity: The Rise (Aftershock) – The main series is solid about animals rising up against humanity. I really want to see where this fits into all of that. A great series under the radar.

The Circle #2 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – A different take on The Craft, the first issue caught me by surprise and the second issue is even better.

Inhumans vs. X-Men #3 (Marvel) – This has been an event series that’s worked so far. The action is solid and it’s balancing a lot going on really well.

The Kamandi Challenge #1 (DC Comics) – Tons of creators taking on a classic. The first issue kicks off this week with eleven more to go.

Review: Savage #2

Marooned in an unforgiving prehistoric landscape, high society’s most privileged celebrity family is fighting tooth and claw – literally – for survival. With no shelter, no weapons and no escape, the Savage family is about to come face to face with the cruelest laws of nature – in the form of the lethal dinosaurs that somehow stalk the impossibly ancient island that has become their home. Once they lose everything – and each other – what part of them will endure? Where will the man inside each of them end…and the animal begin?

There is no denying that Savage #2 has some jaw dropping artwork – indeed it’s the artwork that tells much of the story in this comic – but this is the second of four issues, and so far we haven’t really found out too much more about the story from reading the comic than we have from the preview text from the last couple issues.

Clayton Henry and Lewis Larosa divide their skills between the present and the past, and the differing styles allow you to easily differentiate between the two settings, but thanks to Brian Reber‘s stellar colouring work the comic never feels disjointed. There are two distinct parts to the comic, past and present, and it is within the past that almost all of the dialogue occurs, allowing B. Clay Moore time to establish what has lead up to the present events with our young, violent protagonist.

The only downside to the series thus far is the feeling that this is an excellent set up for a long story about the characters involved, but as this is (at least as far as I know) only going to be a four-issue miniseries, I worry that the page count won’t be long enough to do the story justice.

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – A response to the tragic Pulse shooting, this anthology brings together hundreds of creators all to benefit Equality Florida and the victims of the tragedy. This is a chance to be entertained and touched by a comic and for your dollars to benefit a good cause. More of this, please!

G.I. Joe #1 (IDW Publishing) – It feels like forever since we had a regular G.I. Joe comic series and this new one spinning out of Revolution gives the Joes an interesting new world to play in that feels like it’s the logical progression from all of those Transformers/G.I. Joe comics of the past. I’m excited to see where it all goes and what the Joes look like in this new world.

Soviet Daughter (Microcosm Publishing) – Any other week this would be at the top of my list. This graphic novel follows two stories. Lola who lived through the Bolshevik revolution, civil war, Stalinist purges, and the Holocaust. She taught herself to read and worked as a secretary for the NKVD (which became the KGB) and as a lieutenant for the Red Army. Alos her great-granddaughter Julie who’s coming of age in an immigrant family in Chicago and her political awakening in the midst of the radical politics of the turn of the millennium. Sounds amazing.

Supergirl: Being Super #1 (DC Comics) – A new limited series from Mariko Tamaki and Joëlle Jones that looks like a fantastic coming-of-age story perfect for fans of the tv series… really anybody.

Tomboy #9 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – Are you reading this series? If not, you’re missing out. It’s a vigilante superhero-ish/horror series starring a teenage girl possessed and out for revenge against the people who killed her friend… and she sees ghosts.

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – A tribute to those affected by the Orlando shooting brings the comic book community together with proceeds going to a good cause. Buy it, read it, give it to friends. Love trumps hate!

Batgirl #6 (DC Comics) – Batgirl might not be making it home after all thanks to an attack on her plane home courtesy of Poison Ivy.

Harley’s Little Black Book #5 (DC Comics) – Harley Quin vs Superman and an alien run style Fight Club-esque battle royale. Shut up and take my money!

Justice League vs Suicide Squad #2 (DC Comics) – A continuation of the good guys versus the “good guys” storyline. I’ve got popcorn and can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

Hulk #1 (Marvel) – Jennifer Waters, tries going back to a normal life after the Civil War, whatever that means when you’ve got a Hulk waiting to break free inside of you.

Brik #6 (Oni Press) – The story of a boy, living in a Russian Mob run city in Yonkers, and him Golem closes out its story arc and it’s so good, you’re going to be hoping that the end of this arc isn’t the end of this story!

Joe

Top Pick: Love is Love (IDW Publishing) – I have been so excited for this book since it was announced. It’s a beautiful anthology project by some of the most talented people in the medium, and the proceeds go to the families of the Orlando Pulse victims. Sometimes our medium makes me sad, but moments like this, it makes me happy.

AD: After Death #2 (Image) – The second part of the three part half comic half pride by Snyder and Lemire. If this issue is nearly as good as the first issue, I’ll be satisfied. I do hope we get more answers to what curing death means, but this series is worth the art and writing alone.

Seven To Eternity #4 (Image) – Like Kost Remender books, this series has kept me on my toes. What I thought would be a slow burn quickly turned everything on its head in the last issue. Can’t wait to see what happens next.Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel) – Its finally here! Another Rosenberg comic and another one in the Marvel universe. After his work on CW II: Kingpin, and 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, the sky is the limit for this writer. What a fun character to write about in Rocket. I am very excited for this.

Rocket Raccoon #1 (Marvel) – It’s finally here! Another Matthew Rosenberg comic and another one in the Marvel universe. After his work on Civil War II: Kingpin, and 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank, the sky is the limit for this writer. What a fun character to write about in Rocket. I am very excited for this.

Hulk #1 (Marvel) – I love the Dekal covers, and I cannot wait to see Jen Walters state of mind after the Civil War II Banner, Rhodes, and her in a coma situation. She seems like she is going to be extra angry, which means extra hulky. A raging lawyer with uncontrollable outbursts? Yup!

Top Pick: Divinity III: Komander Bloodshot #1 (Valiant) – The first issue of Divinity III blew me away. I’m all in for this series now, and I can’t wait for this.

All-Star Batman #5 (DC Comics) – After last week’s dismal Batman #13, it’s going to be lovely to get my hands on a comic by one of my favourite Batman writers.

AD: After Death Book Two (Image) – The first book caught me completely off guard with it’s mix of prose-like narrative and whimsically illustrated comic pages. It’s no surprise that the story has already had the screen rights snapped up.

Savage #2 (Valiant) – Tarzan meets dinosaurs. That’s literally why I’m pumped for this.
