Sam Kieth Makes Long-Awaited Return to The Outback in Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams

Batman must face the strangest adventure of his career as he meets the most bizarre hero in comics: The Maxx!

IDW Publishing and DC Comics welcome legendary artist Sam Kieth back to his first Maxx story in over a decade, teaming his greatest creation with the Dark Knight for a mind-blowing five-issue miniseries event. The first issue of Batman/The Maxx: Arkham Dreams will debut this September with covers by Sam Kieth and Jim Lee.

When a devious new doctor at Arkham Asylum conducts unconventional forays into the human psyche, he kicks off a disastrous chain reaction by experimenting on Arkham’s newest patient: The Maxx! The city of Gotham soon begins to merge with the Outback, The Maxx’s psychedelic mental landscape. It’s up to Batman to save Gotham and all of reality… but only by joining The Maxx on a trip into the darkest depths imaginable: the twisted minds of Batman’s greatest enemies!

Vertigo is celebrating of The Sandman‘s 30th anniversary with brand-new collected editions of Neil Gaiman’s seminal story. Following the announcement of a new Gaiman-curated imprint called the Sandman Universe, launching this August, Gaiman’s original series will be rereleased monthly beginning in October.

The anniversary editions will include special introductions from legendary creators including best-selling authors Patrick Rothfuss, Kelly Sue DeConnick, writer/producer Paul Dini, author/comedian/actor Patton Oswalt and more. Each collection will also feature new, original covers from the original Sandman cover artist, Dave McKean.

Gaiman’s new imprint will launch on August 8, 2018 with The Sandman Universe #1, followed by four new titles: The Dreaming, House of Whispers, Lucifer, and Books of Magic. For those who want to discover the origins of these new stories, they can start at the beginning with these anniversary editions.

The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Noctures 30th Anniversary Edition collects issues #1-8, written by Gaiman with art by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, and Malcolm Jones III. It will also feature an introduction from Patrick Rothfuss, best-selling author of The Kingkiller Chronicles, and will be available in comics shops on October 24, and everywhere books are sold on October 30.

Review: Eleanor & The Egret #1

The most daring art thief in Paris has struck again, and the police have assigned their best detective to the case. His only clue? A single white feather left at the scene. Could this feather belong to the thief? To the thief’s accomplice, an oversized talking egret? Or will his investigation lead him to somewhere even stranger? (Answer: all of the above.) Presenting a peculiar and unforgettable tale of birds and banditry, paintings and pets, larceny, love and… lamprey-wielding assassins?

Aftershock Comics has been consistently releasing solid series from a “who’s who” of creators and this week sees the latest with Eleanor & The Egret from writer John Layman and artist Sam Kieth. That combination alone of writer and artist had me super excited to read what sounds like a fun and cute story that feels like it fills a gap of the types of stories Aftershock releases.

Whimsical is one way I’d describe this story that feels like a mix of time periods as to when it takes place so not only is it whimsical, but there’s a sense of magical too. Layman and Kieth have put together a world that is very close to ours, but there’s just slight difference in the demeanors of individuals and how some dress that makes it feel like a mix, part victorian/steampunk (minus the steampunk) part modern. It’s interesting in that way and the setting is unique.

The first issue knocks it out of the park introducing us to the key individuals, settining things up with some fun and funny action, and also sets up conflict beyond the police detective looking for an art thief. There’s a twist there while not unique is still interesting and again feels a little like a throwback.

Layman is helped by Kieth who is a master of blending worlds and whose art I’ve loved for what feels like decades at this point. Kieth has a distinctive style in both how characters are drawn and the coloring that goes along with it all. Here too his artistic style is fantastic adding to the overall vibe of the comic in a similar way that Janet Lee enhances Jim McCann Dapper Men series.

This first issue is a fun start of a quirky new series that delivers cute entertainment and has me really looking forward to see what happens next and where it all goes.

Aftershock Comics has announced a brand new series from writer John Layman, artist Sam Kieth, and colorist Ronda Pattison. Eleanor & The Egret is a slightly surreal tale of an art thief and her sidekick, a talking egret who gets just a bit bigger after each successful caper, as they embark on a escalating series of daring thefts of world-famous paintings, and dodge pursuers in an increasingly weirdly dangerous game of cat-and-mouse.

The fable meets surrealist romance is out April 5th.

Dark Horse and Fox Put the “Alien” in Alien Day

In collaboration with 20th Century Fox and in honor of Aliens Day 2017, Dark Horse has announced its next developments in the beloved Aliens franchise: Aliens: Dead Orbit and Aliens: The Original Comics Series Volume 2.

Aliens: Dead Orbit finds Wascylewsk, an engineering officer, trapped in a space station after a horrific accident. Wascylewsk is forced to use all available tools—a timer, a utility kit, and his wits—to survive an attack from the deadliest creature known to man. James Stokoe writes and illustrates the series. Geof Darrow will provide a variant cover for the first issue.

Following the highly successful release of Aliens: The Original Comic Series earlier this year, volume 2 finds Earth overrun by xenomorphs, with no hope of saving it for humanity. This doesn’t mean humans are ready to give up their home without a fight. Ripley hatches a plan to capture a “Queen Mother”—a super queen that rules multiple nests—and bring it back to Earth. Ripley believes the Queen Mother will command the xenomorphs to gather together where she can detonate a nuclear bomb to destroy them. Mark Verheiden composed the stories while Den Beauvais and Sam Kieth illustrated the interiors. Aliens: The Original Comics Series Volume 2 collects Aliens: Nightmare Asylum #1–#4 and Aliens: Female War #1–#4, and includes cover art for all issues in a special oversized hardcover edition.

Aliens: Dead Orbit’s first issue (of four) goes on sale on April 26, 2017. Aliens: The Original Comics Series Volume 2 also goes on sale April 12, 2017.
