TV Review: iZombie S2E4 Even Cowgirls Get the Black and Blues

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0During an investigation, Liv consumes the brain of a country-singing waitress; Blaine tries to reunite with a former business associate; Ravi is thrown by Peyton’s return; Major’s downward spiral continues.

iZombie goes Southern zombie fried with a fun episode that has Liv eating the brains of a Texas girl who’s a singer. As usual Rose McIver nails the acting bit of it all perfectly embodying an exaggerated stereotype of the country singing waitress. My only issue is that at one point she has a Southern accent which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. However, what’s really impressive is her cadence and the way she delivers some of her lines. There’s something that fits the delivery so well. It’s really impressive at how good she is at it all.

There’s two plotlines I think are a little off, that of Blaine and whatever the hell he’s doing, and Major who’s turned into some assassin, though is scene at the end of the episode is much more in line with things. Both seem a little weird for the rest of the series or just not enough depth really to make them interesting.

The episode is fantastic for McIver’s acting alone. To watch what she does in an episode feels like an acting class at times. That alone makes the episode, and a lot of the show, worth it.

TV Review: iZombie S2E3 Real Dead Housewife of Seattle

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv eats the brains of a trophy wife who was pushed to her death from her home’s balcony by a hired hit man; Liv and Ravi discover Peyton is back in Seattle.

iZombie continues the fun as Liv goes all Housewives and catty after eating the brain of a trophy wife. As usual, Rose McIver sells it with acting that’s humorous and entertaining. The lines she delivers while she’s “in character” kept me on my toes and had my literally laughing out loud. McIver’s the star of the show, and it really revolves around her.

The rest of the episode deals with Major’s new job, which is rather silly in the big picture and how it’s resolved will be key, because right now I don’t see how it’s done so in a way that doesn’t make it bizarre.

The episode also has a little heart as Liv deals with her being alone, and also Peyton’s return has Ravi exploring his feelings as well.

And Major! You tramp!

The series has its formula down, and that’s not a bad thing, because as it sticks to that, it also does a great job moving the greater story along. Yes, it plays with exaggerated stereotypes, but does so in great humor and a smile. The usual fun hour, and one of the best comic adaptations on television.

TV Review: iZombie S2E2 Zombie Bro

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv eats the brain of a murdered, hard-partying fraternity brother; Ravi asks Major to come with him as he searches desperately for the cure; Blaine meets with a mysterious person from his past.

iZombie has fun with with frats after previously making fun of sororities. The episode follows the usual formula of a murder, and Liv having to ear the brain to find out what happened.

This is a show that actually somehow makes the word “bro-active” work.

The draw of the show is actress Rose McIver whose Liv is amazing. McIver embodies every brain she eats and goes all out with the personalities she’s supposed to embody. From beer pong, to using bro-active in a conversation, McIver is impressive in the episode. Her body language alone can tell stories. She also somehow skewers what she’s embodying too.

The episode also has Ravi and Major at a club checking out drugs. Ravi gets to shine, and the conversation the two have about scoring drugs is hilarious. The only issue I had is what happens in the club when Major passes out. You usually get tossed at that point.

The episode also has one of the funniest moments on tv, that I didn’t see coming. And it probably destroyed the innocence of anyone that was watching this episode.

The episode sticks to the formula, but still has enough in McIver’s acting and the writing to keep viewers on their toes. As always, and entertaining hour.

TV Review: iZombie S2E1 Grumpy Old Liv

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv eats a cantankerous old man’s brain to learn the details of his death; Ravi thinks Major is experiencing a side effect of the cure; Liv visits Blaine.

iZombie kicks off its second season without missing a beat and diving into its familiar routine. That’s good because it feels like one big season, and it’s bad in that we’ve seen this before and formulas can become stale.

Folks are dealing with their new status-quo in that Major is dealing what he is, and Blaine is doing the same. There’s hints as to where the season is going, which is nice to see an overarching story to break the formulaic whodunit episodes.

As usual, Rose McIver is what makes the show shine. Seriously, she should be getting some acting nominations for what she does on the show taking the personality on of the brains she eats. She always mixes humor with it all and makes it so entertaining.

The episode feels so familiar, but it also has a nice mix of plotlines to kick off the new season including the threats of more zombies being made. How far that’ll go will be interesting, and there’s a nice twist at the end I wasn’t expecting to see.

TV Review: iZombie S1E13 Blaine’s World

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv and Clive discover new evidence in the Max Rager case and go see Vaughn Du Clark.

iZombie ends its first season with a bang. Not only did it somewhat tie-up some plot points, it also moved ahead to the second season. As many questions that have been answered, so many more have been opened up. We also seem to have a clue as to who our second season villain is.

Major is still in Blaine’s clutches, but goes all Rambo to escape. It’s fun. It’s cathartic. It’s also pretty graphic and violent. I was giddy, I’ll be honest.

There’s some down moments, like when you can see Liv being duped from a mile away. But, for the most part I found myself either cheering or yelling at the television. For a show to get you whipped up like that. That’s a pretty good thing.

The first season has wrapped up, but its set up what should be one hell of a second season. A fantastic finale, for a fantastic first season.

TV Review: iZombie S1E12 Dead Rat, Live Rat, Brown Rat, White Rat

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0After a group of drunken teenage girls cover up an accident, one of them is murdered.

iZombie goes a bit I Know What You Did Last Summer in this episode which is another fantastic episode for many reasons. With one episode left, there’s lot to still do, but Liv is focused on killing Blaine, and Major is preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

The episode focuses a lot on the consequences of what’s happened, and how zombies are creating zombies, and well, there’s a lot of zombies now. There’s tons as far as plot that’s pushed forward in this episode, and I don’t want to spoil any of it, but it’s pretty fantastic and really has me excited for the first season finale. But, again the episode is all about Rose McIver’s acting as Liv. She’s forced to eat the brains of stoners and valley-ish girls, and with each she knocks it out of the park bringing tons of humor in a rather dark at times episode. The second last episode of the season mixes it up with humor, action, and more, and does it all in a smooth entertaining way. iZombie is showing it’s a solid addition to the numerous comic adaptations on tv, and one of the best of the bunch.

TV Review: iZombie S1E11 Astroburger

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0A person close to Major dies of an apparent suicide; a secret computer file comes to light.

iZombie continues to head towards its season finale, still focused on the greater overarching story. This episode focuses on two things really, a video of what happened on the lake, and Major returning to life out of the loony bin.

The former is interesting as it builds on the ongoing mythos, and at the same time has a murder of the week spin to it all. The murder is solved rather quickly, and the search for the video creates some fantastic comedic moments. There’s some seriously funny stuff here, and with a character we’ve seen in an earlier episode, but hasn’t played much of a role. There’s a twist there much later in the episode that’s absolutely fantastic! Well played iZombie!

Then there’s Major…. he’s out of the loony bin and figuring out what to do next. That leads to his relationship with Liv, and a hell of a twist when it comes to that.

The episode really plays well with what’s real, and what’s not using the brain of the victim to create an episode that’s absolutely one of the best of the season. An absolutely fantastic episode all around!

TV Review: iZombie S1E10 Mr. Berserk

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0A journalist working on a story linking psychotic episodes with an energy drink is murdered.

iZombie again brings us an entertaining episode, this one diving more into the bigger story and mythos, getting away from the murder of the week. Things all tie together in this episode as the first season gets closer to wrapping up. There’s a lot of plot points going on, so lets take it bit by bit.

Major is dealing with all that’s going on around him, and thinks he’s going a bit crazy concerning what he’s seen. There’s the issue that his two friends Ravi and Liv know he’s not crazy, but can’t tell him the truth as to what’s happening.

There are hints as to the cause of the zombie outbreak as the episode focuses on an energy drink that makes you go crazy. We shall see if this comes up again.

Finally, Liv is dealing with the death from last episode. She’s not taking it well, so it’s lucky that the latest case she has to deal with involves someone who was an alcoholic, so she can drink her pain away. As usual, actress Rose McIver is fantastic in her role, playing off the drunkenness nicely and at the same time giving us the brokenness and loss she’s experienced. There’s also the realization between Liv and Ravi that something is up and a greater conspiracy exists, but why?

It’s interesting that at 3/4 of the first season done we get a shift in focus as to the greater story, but it also comes at a good time as the formula was a bit repetitive with the episodes. Overall though, the series continues to be entertaining, and how the first season wraps up should be fun and exciting. Another solid episode, of a consistently solid series.

TV Review: iZombie S1E9 Patriot Brains

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv and Clive investigate the death of a former sniper; Major gets closer to the truth.

iZombie is interesting with this episode in that it deals with a lot of issues, and some better than others. The episode has Liv discovering where Blaine is getting his brains from, which leads to a lot of existential issues for Lowell.

That part of the show is really solid. Where things slip a little, is that Liv winds up eating the brain of a former sniper and there’s talk of PTSD. That topic is just touched upon, but isn’t gone in-depth too much. It’s kind of bummer, because it could have been really fantastic to see that aspect bleed over to Liv and her dealing with it herself, especially concerning her situation. There was a fantastic opportunity to explore an important topic, but it just didn’t happen.

The big part of the episode was really moving along the plot of Blaine, and the missing kids. Major does a lot of snooping which leads him to a crazy confrontation. Liv and Lowell also come to a conclusion of how they need to deal with Blaine. We also learn a bit more about the zombie virus.

This episode really deals more with the meta aspect of the story, and where things go from here should be really interesting, especially due to that ending. Didn’t see that one coming at all.

TV Review: iZombie S1E8 Dead Air

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv gains insight after eating the brains of a talk show host who specialized in relationships.

iZombie is all about relationships in this episode, which forces Liv to reexamine hers with friends, as well as her potential love interest.

It’s an interesting way to look at a character’s personal life without just completely devoting the episode and story to that. I like the concept a lot, and it works really well here.

The likely suspects as usual are pretty straightforward, but the “who done it” isn’t really the draw of the series, it’s Rose McIver as Liz and her dealing with being a zombie. As usual she’s beyond charming in the role.

The most interesting aspect is the recently introduced conspiracy running through the police department. The fact there’s a cover-up going on is very interesting and adds a deeper, more sinister, aspect to it all.

iZombie continues to be a fun series, standing out from the numerous series on tv based on comics.
