“Dark Trinity” part one! When a turf war puts Black Mask in Red Hood’s crosshairs, Jason discovers that the False Face Society is not what it seems, and that the organization is about to auction off a powerful weapon. As criminals from all over the globe descend on Gotham City, Jason must prove that he belongs amongst the city’s worst in order to gain access to this Dark Summit!

Review: Red Hood and the Outlaws #1

REDHOTO-Cv1-ds-4f551Jason Todd, aka Red Hood, is back in Gotham City and taking his brand of vigilante justice to the streets. In Red Hood and the Outlaws he’s gone undercover in Black Mask’s organization to get close to the crime boss to be able to take him down from within, either dead or alive. As the title suggests, Jason won’t be doing this alone and so sets up the first issue of this Rebirth title.

The story starts with a flashback to Jason’s past. As expected, this is not a happy memory , but it serves to remind old readers and introduce new ones to the character and why exactly he does what he does.  It also serves to give us and Jason a look into the lengths that Black Mask will go to in order to see that he is the only crime boss running Gotham.  Jason tries to take a page from his old mentor’s playbook, and watches and waits to make his move.  It’s a very good few panels that show us that he may be all rough and tough on the outside, but Jason still relies on what he learned from Batman, though he would never admit it.

So Red Hood jumps into action, guns blasting and makes his presence known to Black Mask, inquiring about a job offer he received from one of Mask’s lackeys (scene in Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1).  Mask wasn’t surprised at all at Red Hood’s arrival, having been expecting him, and goes on to explain his intentions for Gotham.  Black Mask believes the city has been mistreated, and all he wants to do is correct it and turn it into his idea of a well run machine.  Red Hood is offered a position as second in command, and sees his chance to learn more.  So he accepts and is sent out on his first mission for Mask, which ends up putting him head to head with an obstacle he didn’t see coming.

Scott Lobdell brings us a great jumping off point for this series, and has me really excited for it.  I really enjoyed how we hit the ground running with the story, but at the same time we are given enough backstory for readers to get a good understanding of Red Hood.  As mentioned, he kicks ass first and asks questions later but we also catch glimpses of sentiment from Jason that shows that there is a lot more happening under that red hood. Dexter Soy brings great art to this book that just comes to life with Veronica Gandini providing the colours. You definitely get the darker feel from the pages, like you would expect from a bat family member in Gotham, but the action scenes are bright and exciting and definitely get you right into the moment.

I really enjoyed this first issue and I am very excited for the next one. I read the New 52 run of Red Hood and the Outlaws for a time, and enjoyed the teaming of Hood with Arsenal and Starfire, but quickly lost interest with the tone of the book being a little too light for the character, at least in my opinion. This is the Red Hood I was hoping to see; tough and angry, doing what he feels needs to be done, but at the same time drawing on his past to help him move forward, even though that past is quite painful. I also liked the fact that they didn’t just throw the team together, but we’re going to see the members coming together as Jason’s time with Black Mask goes on. Better to build on the story and flesh out the players, instead of just in your face “here you go, now like them”. This was a great start to this book and I have a very good feeling this high will carry on into the next issue.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

All Star Batman #1 CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Jason

Top Pick: The Vision #10 (Marvel) – Delivering emotional gut punches and shocking moments, King and Walta’s and heart-achingly tale of family, conformity and identity hit’s it’s sure to be devastating endgame. The Visions mission for normality and a place in the world falls apart and promises the violence and inevitable confrontation with his fellow avengers that has been lurking in plain sight since the very first issue. Continually gripping and equally shocking, I can only imagine what the last three issues of what is sure to be known as a classic will bring for the Vision and his family.

Spidey: First Day (Marvel) – Marvel hasn’t exactly left fans desperate for Spider-man related titles in the last few years with readers able to get their arachnid fix in Infamous, Amazing, 2099, Silk and Gwen flavors to name just a handful. Hearing about this new title I was skeptical at first especially in the high school setting the films still obsess over even now. The truth is despite the enduring Image of Peter, he only spent about thirty or so issues actually in High school, which makes it the perfect place to get some old school, no nonsense webslinger stories. This first volume collects writer Robbie Thompson (already a Spider-vetron having written Silk and Venom: Space Knight) and Wolverine and the X-Men artist Nick Bradshaw. With Peter back in high school and his early career as the wallcrawler, the pair have been creating an essential re-tweaking of this time in our hero’s life. Even within the confines of a soft re-imagining they succeed in thrilling at every turn with the mix of high school drama and updated canonical appearances of classic Spidey villains like Doc Oc. The super detailed work on Bradshaw gives a much needed youthful energy to the book as he did with Wolverine and the X-Men.

While I’m thrilled with the major character development and changes Peter Parker has had over the last few years it’s still great to see a book out there for an audience who wants fun, exciting old school Spidey tales. Top Pick: A&A: The Adventures of Archer And Armstrong #6 (Valiant) – I always enjoy reading the adventures of these two, in what is easily one of Valiant’s most entertaining comics. And from arguably the best publisher around, that’s saying something (or it should be). This issue kicks off a new arc, and Valiant are pretty good at easing new readers into their comics at the start of each arc, so this is an ideal issue to start with if you’re not already reading this series.

All-Star Batman #1 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder returns to Batman with a new monthly comic. As one of my favourite Batman writers in recent times, I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this comic and seeing how it compare to his earlier work, and also the current writers of Detective Comics and Batman.

Old Man Logan #10 (Marvel) – I have wanted to love this series since it launched, but I’ve found it a little hit and miss as the issues have ticked by – more hit than miss, in all honesty, though. The art has been consistently brilliant, however, and the series has been worth reading for that alone, but the new arc seems to be taking Old Man Logan into an intriguing story line.

Red Hood And The Outlaws #1 (DC Comics) – I’m just curious to see if it’s just Red Hood here, or if the Outlaws from the New 52 series will join him.

Ninjak #18 (Valiant) – One of my favourite tie-ins to Book Of Death involved both of the characters featured in this new story: Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior, from around this time period in Valiant’s continuity. I’m excited to see the pair of them back together again.

Mr. H

All-Star Batman # 1 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder back on Batman? What more is there to say but Hell Bleepin’ Yes! Suicide Squad this past weekend gave me a little shot of Batman and now I need a full dose! I am very excited for the premise as Snyder always finds a way to reinvent the classic foes and throw new and exciting challenges at the Dark Knight. Plus I heard Batman with a chainsaw on a road trip? Sign me up!!! Not even packing a bag for this one, it’s just get up and GO!

Paul

Top Pick: A-Force #8 (Marvel) – While the Civil War II event has been ho-hum at best, I’m looking forward to seeing which side of the battle the members of A-Force will take.  Will they stand with their teammate Captain Marvel?  Medusa for sure, but the rest?  Hard to say, but I’m looking forward to it.  I’ve enjoyed this book from the start, and things look like they’re going to get a lot more interesting.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #1 (DC Comics) – Red Hood, Artemis and Bizarro. This has to be one of the oddest team-ups I’ve seen, but I am interested.  I’ve been enjoying a few of the Rebirth books and getting reacquainted with characters I haven’t really been following for a while.  Red Hood has always been an interesting character (to me) so I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets teamed up  with an amazon and Bizarro.

Scarlet Witch #9 (Marvel) – This title, sadly, has not been the fantastic journey for Wanda I was hoping it would be.  It’s been pretty bland to be honest. But, Quicksilver is visiting his sister (I think they’re still related, not too sure after the awful decision to rewrite their history) but I am looking forward to seeing them reunite and take their sides in the civil war.

Brett

Top Pick: Black Monday Murders #1 (Image Comics) – The fact that Jonathan Hickman is writing this should be enough to get you to want to get it, it does for me. The concept sounds amazing as well. It’s a new take on magic and occultism where schools of magic are actually clandestine banking cartels who control society. Magical conspiracy theories from Hickman? I’m sold.

All-Star Batman #1 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder continues with Batman in an all new series that focuses more on the villains and anyone that knows Snyder, knows his take on villains is amazing. Add in a rotating who’s who of artists and you have a series that’ll be a must get.

Deathstroke: Rebirth #1 (DC Comics) –  Writer Christopher Priest returns, nuff said.

Superwoman #1 (DC Comics) – Phil Jimenez takes on a super-powered Lois Lane in this new series which feels like a real heir to the Superman mantle. A positive take and some great twists make this a comic a must get.

NVRLND #1 (451 Media Group) – A new twisted take on Peter Pan. It’s a solid first issue that has me wanting more. You can read my review.

Review – Requiem’s Batman Incorporated #9, Teen Titans #18, Nightwing #18 and Red Hood and the Outlaws #18

Batman Incorporated #9

batman incorporated #9 coverThe fallout from last month’s shocking turn of events has Batman on the run! Is The Dark Knight a murderer? Batman Inc. is still battling their foe, Leviathan. This is the continuation of the previous issues shocking event. Batman and his allies deal with the death of Robin and getting their collective butts handed to them.

This issue is filled with sorrow. There’s also another death of a Batman Inc. member that has to be dealt with and that’s done as well. But, again, there’s a lack of emotional heft that I’ve felt has been an issue with a lot of the  “Requiem” tie-in comics.

Morrison, in the last issue, gave us what should have been an emotional and shocking moment. Instead, it came off as a stunt in that issue. Here, I’d hope for a melancholy issue full of emotional outpouring. Instead it feels like the regrouping of Batman and his allies after getting their asses handed to them.

There just hasn’t been a reflection that I’ve been hoping for. Face it, this isn’t the first time Batman has gotten a kid killed. You’d think there’d be some more reaction, just based on that.

Much like most of what I’ve read of Morrison’s the story jumps around, almost to the point of choppiness. I know some folks are huge fans, but I’m not one of them. I can only recommend this issue for folks who have been keeping up with the storyline. Definitely not a point for new readers to jump on and find out what’s going on.

Teen Titans #18

Teen Titans #18 coverUnknown to the Teen Titans, Red Robin’s condition is worsening after the events of “Death of the Family.” And now Red Robin must face an even greater tragedy! The new Dr. Light is coming for Solstice! Guest-starring the Suicide Squad!

Red Robin (was he a Robin? I’m kind of confused) is a close member of the Batman family and here he deals with the death of Damian in some pretty touching scenes. They’re a little by the books, but still touching.

What’s good though is Lobdell uses this death to focus on Red Robin’s mission. He formed the Teen Titans to protect super powered teens. With the death of Damian, he failed. And there’s all the other death’s on his hands. He’s not doing so hot when it comes to his mission.

So, he takes the Teen Titans on a mission to free another teen from Amanda Waller’s prison. That puts them directly in the cross hairs of the Suicide Squad. Lots of fighting ensues and it’s entertaining.

There’s also a nice twist, but that I don’t want to give away.

Overall, the issue feels like a bit of a kick start and mission statement for the series. Nice to see the death of a character lead in a positive direction and used for the narrative good, instead of just shock.

Nightwing #18

Nightwing #18 coverDick Grayson lost so much during “Death of the Family” that some new events are going to push him right over the edge! Nightwing has almost no hope left until the chance for vengeance presents itself. What decisions will he make?

We know there’s some big changes in store for Dick Grayson. With the next issue, he heads to Chicago, so this issue is a bridge between the death of Damian and his new location. It’s a reflection of the past as well as a look towards the future.

The issue feels like it’s an attempt to wrap up some plot points and ghosts haunting Grayson. He still spent time as Batman in the New 52, so he was a partner of Damian’s. The death of his former partner weighs on him, as well as his past role as Robin. And out of all of the characters, his seems to be the most emotional and believable. There is some catharsis and reaction here that totally makes sense. And it’s more than welcome, since it’s missing from a few other issues where it should have been more prevalent.

The issue is solid for another reason, it’s a good jumping on point. There’s some big changes coming for Nightwing, and this is the point new readers can hop on to find out this change’s motivation. It accomplishes two things, allows Nightwing to deal with the past and look towards the future. It’s one of the best of the “Requiem” tie-ins.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.75 Recommendation: Buy

Red Hood and the Outlaws #18

Red Hood and the Outlaws #18 coverJason Todd suffered terribly at the hands of The Joker in “Death of the Family,” and now he’s changing the Outlaws’ mission! Something is bound to break with all that’s happened…will it be Jason’s soul?

So, did Jason die in the New 52? I stopped reading this series only a few issues in, so not sure what was retconned and which is still events. But, I’m going to assume that Jason was still killed at the hands of the Joker, instead of just being beaten severely.

So, you’d think next to Batman, Jason would be the most affected. Especially since the Joker tortured him a bit more than the rest. The story is two parts. There’s Jason struggling with his torture. The other part deals with Bruce/Batman dealing with the fact he has failed twice now when it comes to Robins.

First, there’s the pseudo issue with the fact this has Batman sitting around a lot when the other issues has him acting a lot and getting his aggression out by beating people up.

Then there’s what’s going on within Jason’s psyche. I really don’t know much about his coming back from the dead and whatever else was referenced in this issue. It’s interesting, but predictable. I’m sure there’s more to it for long time readers and fans.

The issue had a bit of the emotion other issues of “Requiem” has missed. It’s a predictable issue, but a decent read.
