DC Doesn’t Care About Black People

Bookmark and Share

Where’s Kanye when you need him to interrupt a post?  Over at Bleeding Cool, Ryan Mullinex has put together a suspicious list of minority characters who’ve been bumped off by or replaced by Caucasian characters.

I’m not very verse in DC history and continuity, so can’t speak out on this, but it’s a very interesting list.  Is this suspicious?  Cherry picked?  Is it just story telling?  The folks at Comics Beat don’t seem to agree.  What say you?  Take the poll below.

Here’s this week’s batch of quotes that prove comics isn’t just for kids these days.

Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers #2

Captain America – I think this war will cause a lot of Americans to rethink their attitudes.  You can’t go to war with a bunch of jerks who call themselves the master race and turn around and do the same thing back home.

Black Panther – Evil is only allowed to flourish when good men do nothing to stop it.  As a symbol of your country your actions take on great weight.  The true test of your ideals come when the war is over.

Captain America – What do you mean?

Black Panther – A nation at war has an enemy to unify them.  A nation with no enemy… often looks for one within it’s own borders.

Superman: War of the Supermen #1

Alura – Reactron is a prisoner of the state, and he has information necessary for the protection of our people —

Kara – “Our people”?  Have you lost your freaking mind?  You’ve been torturing someone down here, mom!  Someone you sent me to Earth to bring back to New Krypton.  That makes me responsible for him.  Just as it makes me complicit in a war crime.

Alura – If I have to go to extreme measures to get information out of him — information that will keep our planet safe — it’s worth it.

Captain America: Reborn #6

Red Skull/Captain America – — A new morning in America.

Unknown Soldier #16

Moses – There are expressions that every human face in the world does the same… It doesn’t matter the language, the belief, the culture or the color of the skin.  In these expressions the whole breadth of the human race is unified.  In these we are all one.

X-Men: Forever #16

Kramer – I want my lawyer.

Dugan – What makes you think you get a lawyer?

Kramer – I know my rights.

Dugan – You’re an operative of S.H.I.E.L.D.  This is a matter of potentially global security.  You have no rights.

Choice Quotes

Ex Machina #45

Mayor Hundred – Whatever, it’ll be your house in a few months anyway.

Dave – See, I don’t know about that.  Odds are I’m going to have Bob Kerrey running to the left of me, Ogniebene to my right and Bloomberg down the middle.  And most New Yorkers are still smarting from the last time they elected a black man Mayor.

and

Dave – We could be the first city in America to announce a multimillion-dollar plan to get the morning-after pill into more women’s hands, and I think we should.

Mayor Hundred – After four years of me successfully dodging that shitstorm, now you want me to use taxpayer dollars on abortion pills?

Dave – That’s RU-486.  Morning-after is just emergency contraception.  No different than us handing out condoms on the subway.

Mayor Hundred – Except it is.  I’m with you that abstinence is a fairy tale, but I think some birth control options are more… hot-button than others.

and

Dave – But… you’re pro-choice.  Aren’t you?

Mayor Hundred – That’s what certainly what everyone believes.

Dave – And what the hell do you believe?

Mayor Hundred – That public servants should try to avoid genital politics and concentrate on actually getting shit done.

Punisher #9

Microchip – He’s Dead Frank.  Deader than the G.O.P.

Choice Quotes

Captain America: Reborn #1

Vision – But that is how Captain America died… and America lost it’s symbol of hope…

Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-Men: Utopia

It’s appropriate this comic was released around the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots.  The X-Men have always been an allegory of race relations and now tells the oppression of those with “different” sexual orientations.

Simon Trask – And all we need to do to make sure it never happens again is to gently and humanely legislate when and how mutants are allowed to breed.

and

Franklin Richards – Why do people hate mutants mom?  Does that mean they hate me?

and

Newsreporter – They’re not out as super heroes or super villains or super-anything.  They’re out in the streets tonight because a million people showed up in their hometown demanding laws be passed that forbids them to have babies.

Secret Six #11

Mr. Smyth – What do all the Great Wonders of the ancient world have in common?  The Pyramids, the Great Wall… the Godly architecture that still makes the human heart sing even after untold centuries!

Savage – They were all built by slaves, Mr. Smyth.  That is the curse they all share.

Mr. Smyth – Yes.  The mind knows that.  But the heart… the heart knows better.  Tourists flock to see these grand gestures every day, people in faroff lands hear them call.  And the cost is what, the lives and toil of a few scattered souls?  For works that last an eternity and inspire awe and greatness in all who see them?  Most of the world lives and dies for nothing and no one.  Those “slaves,” they died for all.

Thor #602

Lord Balder – I have never understood how war can be civil.  If Asgardians turned brother against brother, the results would be most uncivil… and would destroy the legacy that is my obligation to protect.

Unknown Soldier #9

Cell leader – But you fight children… people call me a bad man and even I do not kill children.  You must reimagine how you will fight your war, our war.  Will you continue to kill countless children?  Or take out a single celebrity?  One bullet can move a moutain.  It is only a question of where that bullet is aimed.

Choice Quotes

Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #3

Gov’t Agent – I’ll be honest with you, Ms. Frazier, this is not an easy assignment.  It may challenge you in ways a proper southern woman like yourself has never had to consider.  How do you feel about coloreds?

Frazier – Never really though about it.

Gov’t Agent – They’re different than us, Agen Frazier.  Their values, their culture… Had I my druthers I’d rather not expose you to… Let’s just say American comes before personal comfort.

also

Blue Marvel – I don’t believe it — even here — forty thousand kilometers from Earth —  and the first thing I see is a giant alien white man with an attitude.

also

the Watcher – I know of a people called the Kree.  They built these ruins on which we stand millenia ago.  Same problems.  Blue skins against pink skins.  Brother versus brother.  All fools… all doomed.  Do not let that happen to this precious world.

Dark Avengers #1

Osborn – My name is Norman Osborn and I approve of these Avengers!!

Guardians of the Galaxy #9

Star Lord – Blastaar sent me in to talk terms.  You in charge?

Jack Flag – No one’s in charge.

Star Lord – But a few of the strongest personalities have floated to the top?

Jack Flag – It’s like living democracy.  It’s a beautiful thing.

Ruin

Washington, D.C. as it was, swallowed back up by its state now that the White House is gone.  I hate this city.  It’s here that the American dream decided it liked the taste of vomit it was choking on.  Just rolled over on its back and screamed for more drugs.  It didn’t die.

Thunderbolts # 128

President Obama – You see, the things is, Norman, I have misgivings.  Grave misgivings.  You’ve been granted unprecedented powers… More power perhaps, than should rightfully reside in the hands of one man in a Democratic society.

Osborn – With respect, that’s a little rich coming from the so-called leader of the free world.

also

Ant-man – Just like the man — always tryin’ ta step on the little guy!  I voted for Colbert anyway…

Choice Quotes

Avengers: The Initiative #19

Tippy-Toe Says – Squirrel Girl would rather go naked than wear fur!

and

Skull-Kill Krew – I understand all right.  God doesn’t love you.  He loves America.

Dark Reign: New Nation

Captain America – I believe in an idea… an idea a single individual who has the right heart and the right mind… that is consumed with a single purpose… that one man can win a war.  Give that one man a group of soldiers with the same conviction… and you can change the world.

The Invincible Iron Man #8

Osborn – The Superhuman Registration Database, Stark.  You know the one I mean.  Where is it?  How do I access it?

Stark – It’s — Ah — It’s Not — Osborn.  It’s not your personal file-o-fax.  You can’t just browse it at your leisure.  You need about a half-dozen warrants and probable cause and a federal judge to—

Osborn – Commander.

Stark – … Excuse me?

Osborn – You called me “Osborn.”  I’m trying “Commander Osborn” on for the size at the moment.

Stark – Well.  “Commander.”  You don’t get to go flipping through the database any more than you get to seize someone’s cell phone records or decide to call yourself commander.

X-Factor #38

Madrox – In the end, sometimes the smart thing is to bypass bad habits and learned behavior.  There are entire countries where fighting is the default position.  If you’re willing to put aside that mindset… it’s amazing how much you can accomplish with minimal fuss.

Uncanny X-Men #505

Mayor of San Francisco – This is San Francisco.  The hated and misunderstood have always had a home here.

Choice Quotes

Adam: Legend of the Blue Marvel #2

Dum Dum Dugan – Jackie Robinson… Cassius Clay… the world wasn’t ready for him.  It was a different time.  A different world.

Tony Stark – That doesn’t excuse it.

Dum Dum Dugan – Never said it did.  But this wasn’t baseball or boxing.  It was politics.  Different animal, different rules.  You of all people should know that.  A black man with the power he had during that time in history made people feel… uncomfortable.

and

Kruetz – You hypocritical liberals are all alike.  You want the world to read like a mother’s day card.  But you don’t want to do what’s necessary to keep it safe.  A safe world costs something.  Someone, somewhere has to pay the piper when the bill comes due.

Tony Stark – Machiavellianism is often used as a euphemism for corruption.

Kruetz – You would know.
