Dark Horse Comics Reveals an All-New Baltimore story from Baltimore Omnibus 2

The second Baltimore Omnibus from Dark Horse Comics features an all-new eight-page story by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, featuring art by Ben Stenbeck, colors by Dave Stewart, and lettering by Clem Robins. The never-before-published story features the adventures of a giant ape.

In addition to the new story, the second Baltimore Omnibus collects Baltimore: The Witch of Harju #1-#3, Baltimore: The Wolf and the Apostle #1-#2, Baltimore: The Cult of the Red King #1-#5, Baltimore: Empty Graves #1-#5, and Baltimore: The Red Kingdom #1-#5.

Finally armed with the identity of the being responsible for the vampire plague, Baltimore and his band of allies take on the evil around them with a new fervor. Enemies old and new, desperate battles, and strange horror await the reader as they follow Baltimore toward his ultimate destiny.

From writers Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, with art by Ben Stenbeck and Peter Bergting comes the culmination of the Baltimore series, published for the first time in an omnibus format. Baltimore Omnibus 2 is available in bookstores as of April 7, 2020.

Folklords #1 Gets a Third Printing Before Release

BOOM! Studios has announced that Folklords #1, the premiere issue of a new original series from Eisner Award-nominated writer Matt Kindt and acclaimed artist Matt Smith, has sold out of its fast-tracked second printing at the distributor level before its on-sale date of November 13, 2019.

In order to meet the overwhelming demand from retailers and fans, BOOM! Studios has fast-tracked Folklords #1 Third Printing Variant to arrive in comic shops on December 4, 2019. This third printing will feature an all-new cover by artist Peter Bergting. Quantities will be limited and allocations may occur.  

In a world of magic and monsters, Ansel is an outsider haunted by visions of well-pressed suits and modern technology. Originally published by Natur & Kultur in Sweden in 2018, Dark Horse’s We’ll Soon Be Home Again is a translation of the award-winning Swedish comic by writer Jessica Bab Bonde and artist Peter Bergting.

In We’ll Soon Be Home Again, the testimonies of six Holocaust survivors are presented in comics form. All of them were children then, and are still alive to tell what happened to them and their families. How they survived. What they lost—and how you keep on living, despite it all. Using the first-person point of view allows the stories to get under your skin as survivors describe their persecutions in the Ghetto, the de-humanization and the starvation in the concentration camps, and the industrial-scale mass murder taking place in the extermination camps.

When right-wing extremism and antisemitism are being evoked once again, We’ll Soon Be Home Again is the alarm-bell needed to remind us never to forget the horrors of the Holocaust. The 104-page We’ll Soon Be Home Again goes on sale in comic shops on March 25, 2020 and in bookstores on April 7, 2020.

Dark Horse Ventures Into “The Dark North”

Mignola and Christopher Golden Conclude the Baltimore Saga in 2017

Review: Baltimore: Empty Graves #5

After the Blood-Red Witch disappears with Baltimore, Sofia and the others must fend off her followers while Rose and Kidd follow a new lead to find the witch and save Baltimore.

All things must end, for other things to begin. Even as the Red King enters this world, all seems lost. Yet Baltimore learns a powerful secret, but the price is high. I’m curious to see how writers Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden continue this in the next story arc, given the ending of this issue.

Dark, gory, action packed, and violent is the best way to describe the art by Peter Bergting. I will admit the Red King entering this world is a sight to behold and Bergting nails it. The artist leaves a slightly haunting impression as the vessel of Red king brings destruction in his wake.

As usual, a “Mignola” is as fantastic to look at for the art is it is entertaining to read.

Review: Baltimore: Empty Graves #4

Led to a sultan’s tomb in their search for the Blood-Red Witch, Baltimore and his companions get answers from unexpected sources that will lead them not only to the witch, but to the Red King as well.

In Baltimore: Empty Graves #4 things get strange as the origin tale of the living dead sultans is revealed. Writer Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden manage to share the tale of how the Blood-Red Witch came to her current moniker back when she was human. It all leads to a climatic and intriguing fight scene revealing even more. This comic deals with more of the past than some previews issues.

The tale of the past is well drawn by Peter Bergting. The art creates an interesting portrait especially with the design of the body of Blood-Red Witch, in particular, the use of color. The fight scenes are superb and manage to flow well. It all comes together to give the comic a dire sense of urgency, and action.

Review: Baltimore: Empty Graves #3

Baltimore continues his journey to Constantinople, where his search for the Blood-Red Witch leads to the royal family.

Baltimore, sometimes a hero, sometimes a madman, and sometimes even tomb raider. Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, Baltimore: Empty Graves #3 is filled with a slightly more exotic landscape, as Baltimore’s hunt for the Red King leads him to Constantinople. A landscape divided by politics, as worshipers for the Red King practice a ritual under the nose of most.

The strange plant woman creature is gorgeously well done by artist Peter Bergting. Even the strange, monstrous, creations that the Red King made are creepy. They all have an almost ethereal like in appearance, despite the heavy use of reds in their demonic skin. It all works together to evoke the vibe we’ve come to expect in Mignola’s world.

Review: Baltimore: Empty Graves #2

Before Baltimore and company set out for Constantinople to hunt the Blood Red Witch, old friends are buried and they prepare to face their own graves in their hunt for the Red King.

In Baltimore: Empty Graves #2 the tragic story of one of Baltimore’s companions is revealed. While the tale is sad, it does reveal why he is with Baltimore, and his assorted crew. Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, this issue reveals, something darker, about the man himself. We get that along with his almost suicidal desire to see the end of the Red King, and his own death along with him.

The art by Peter Bergting fits the natural darkness of Mignolaverse. Bergting does an excellent job blending in backstories, with the present as they bury empty coffins. Despite the tragedy throughout the issue, the comic is well drawn. It showcases the light of life, and the darkness of death.
