Game Review: Pathfinder Adventure Card Game

20140209-154415.jpgA forgotten evil stirs in the ancient land of Varisia. Dark magic once more thrums amid crumbling ruins, giants gather in titanic armies, cultists murder in the name if foul deities, and maniacal goblins plot a fiery end for the peaceful town of Sandpoint.

First unleashed at Gen Con 2013, designer Mike Selinker and Paizo Publishing have melded roleplaying, card gaming, and dice rolling into the entirely unique and wildly entertaining Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. The Pathfinder universe (it is much much larger than a world) experienced its Big Bang moment in 2008 with their beta RPG of D&D’s version 3.5 system. Officially released to critical acclaim the following year, Paizo has since taken Pathfinder to extraordinary levels with unending expansions, novels, miniatures, comics, and now a card game. By diluting the intricacies of a pen and paper RPG and adding CCG and Magic elements, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game has broken down gaming boundaries to appeal to the masses…and it does so masterfully.

In a nutshell, a party of adventurers (1-4 players, I’ve played mostly solo) set off on a quest to explore various locations and find and defeat villains. The base set (nearly 500 cards, ~$50) and all six expansions (110 cards and ~$18 each) is considered the Adventure Path, while the individual expansions are called Adventures, and each Adventure consists of multiple Scenarios. Players can choose to do a standalone Scenario, or work through each consecutive Adventure in the path. The base set comes with the first Adventure, Burnt Offerings, but each additional expansion is sold separately.

Each individual game comes with some set up. First, players must pick and assemble their character deck, then the individual locations are assembled from a randomly selected set of boons (weapons, spells, items, etc.) and banes (villains, monsters, henchmen, barriers). At times, and especially when a new expansion is shuffled in, this can get tedious.

Set aside 30 blessings cards, which are important in your deck or at locations, but in this instance are simply a game counter (flip one per turn)…and you’re ready to go. Players choose a location and ‘explore’ it on their turn. You attempt to acquire boons and defeat banes. Attempts are called ‘checks,’ essentially a dice roll. As you will come to find out, there are times it turns into a Russian nesting doll of checks, with one action requiring three or four dice rolls…and can get confusing if you don’t keep track. Death or end of game (which can roughly take up to 90 min) comes when you can no longer draw a card from your character deck or you run out of blessings cards. Winning comes when your band finds and defeats the villain. Success adds additional cards to your deck and/or skill and power feats to your character, which can all be carried forward to the next Scenario.

20140209-155727.jpg

The single most frustrating aspect of this game is the dependency on the rulebook, and in the case of the base set, an incomplete rulebook. As the designer admitted, assumptions were made that shouldn’t have been made, and dozens of questions remained that forced players to turn to web forums and message boards for answers. Selinker and Paizo dutifully created an updated PDF version, and still actively visit sites to respond to pleas for help.

I’ve also heard the “all you’re doing is flipping cards and rolling dice” comment. Yes, at its core, that’s what it consists of (aren’t most games?), but it can be so much more than that if you let it. Read the card descriptions and backgrounds, check out the Pathfinder Tales (there are free chapters online), and immerse yourself in the story. If you’re going to monetarily invest in it (and that you will, trust me), then you should intellectually invest in it as well.

The initial factory line product was far from perfect, but the transparent response from Selinker and Paizo, and subsequent attempts to rectify errata, card conflicts, and unanswered questions has made me a true fan. Detailed artwork, fantastic mechanics, and an immersive story will see this successfully through to this summer’s second follow-up Adventure Path, Skull & Shackles. Though I’m still working through Burnt Offerings, I’ve purchased and neatly placed Adventures 2 and 3 and the Character Add-on Deck in their allotted slots. Hours have been put into this game, and there are hours to come…some frustrating, all worth it.

Review: Pathfinder: Goblins! #3

20131002-142846.jpgAs a spin-off of a comic of a tabletop roleplaying game, Pathfinder: Goblins! is a fun and lighthearted read that manages to hold its own as a standalone series.

So how did we go from pen and paper RPG to a goblin comic book? The brilliant team at Paizo Publishing took advantage of their wildly successful Pathfinder roleplaying game and ran with it, creating the Pathfinder Society, Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, and Pathfinder Comics (to name a few). They have a rabid and loyal fan base, and teaming up with Dynamite Comics to create this series is just another way to give back to their gamers.

This month’s issue is broken down into two short stories, “To Read or Not to Read” and “The Way of the Goblin.” The former, and better of the two, is a cheeky take on Shakespearean history and the goblin that overcomes his fear of reading. The second story revolves around a goblin leader’s frustrating attempt at teaching tactics to his pack, and the predictable bedlam that ensues. Writers Ron Marz and Ray Fawkes maintain the series’ tradition and find yet another way to make bumbling, stupid goblins bumble and look stupid…it never gets old.

Though there are a myriad of artists, all of which deliver entertaining albeit average illustrations, Jennifer Meyer‘s cover art and storybook inserts stand out amongst the rest. Meyer scales back the bright, familiar sequentials and delivers charming, fairytale pages in the midst of the first short story (it’ll catch you off guard when they show up). Her attractive cover is just a taste of the four storybook pages.

As Graphic Policy continues to branch off into new arenas, I am sure one day I’ll review some of Paizo’s other products, even though their site states, “players need only the single 576-page core rulebook,” to play Pathfinder (yikes). For now, I’ll stick with their comics…they are a nice break from the Marvel and DC universes that can oftentimes take themselves way too seriously.

Gen Con 2013: Gen Con Breaks Numbers

Gen Con Indy 2013, which took place this past weekend August 15-18 at the Indiana Convention Center, experienced record attendance numbers and unprecedented growth. The weekend turnstile attendance of 159,364 and unique attendance of 49,058, grew the convention 20% from 2012’s record-setting 41,000+ unique attendees. These metrics show continued growth of more than 75% over the past five years.

Adrian Swartout, CEO of Gen Con LLC said:

The Gen Con team is ecstatic about the attendance numbers for Gen Con Indy 2013, but there are also many other successes from this year’s show to share. More than 12,000 gaming and entertainment events occurred at the convention, 360+ companies exhibited, the annual Trade Day doubled in attendance, and Sunday enjoyed record-breaking Family Fun Day attendance. It is hard to believe Gen Con Indy could experience a better year than 2012, but our exhibitors, sponsors, and event organizers guaranteed this was absolutely our best show.

Gen Con Indy accounts for more than $47 million in yearly economic impact to Indianapolis, a figure that has only been surpassed by the 2012 Super Bowl.

Leonard Hoops, President & CEO of Visit Indy, the city’s convention and tourism agency added:

Gen Con continues to experience tremendous growth in Indianapolis. Gen Con LLC leadership really knows their attendees and how to enhance the gaming experience every year, and Indy really knows Gen Con and how to put on a great event. We’re delighted to be the host city through at least 2020 and look forward to many future Gen Cons to come.

Record-setting numbers were not limited to attendance and economic impact. The show’s Co-Sponsors each hosted high-profile events commanding media attention. The first Guinness World Record attempt at a Gen Con Indy was completed successfully by Mayfair Games on Saturday, August 17, when they achieved the world’s largest game of Catan with 922 players. Wizards of the Coast hosted a sold out Night with D&D event, featuring a murder mystery puzzle game. Paizo Publishing’s Pathfinder Special Event filled the Sagamore Ballroom, with actions of one player impacting the games of hundreds of others. Collectively, these three events had more than 2,500 ticketed participants.

Gen Con’s Wednesday Tapping Party for Indianapolis business Sun King Brewing’s official beer of Gen Con Indy 2013, Flagon Slayer, drew more than 2,000 fans to the Wednesday night event on Georgia Street.

Gen Con Indy 2014 will take place at the Indianapolis Convention Center from August 14-17, 2014.

In Paizo’s Pathfinder Society Organized Play program, you play a member of the Pathfinder Society, seeking fortune and glory all over the face of Golarion, the official setting of the award-winning Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. At the same time, your character works for one of a number of competing factions, all with their own motivations and secret agendas.

Pathfinders are a diverse bunch of scoundrels and wanderers. Their loyalties lie on all shores of the Inner Sea, and beyond their adventures as Pathfinders, they often find themselves mixed up in the murky politics of Absalom and the factions who seek to control the City at the Center of the World from behind the scenes. The campaign centers on the sprawling city of Absalom, where the factions engage in a shadow war for control of the city’s politics and economy.

Pathfinder Society Organized Play is a constantly evolving mega-campaign played by thousands of players, and the adventures you experience are shared by players around the world. Play is organized into Seasons, throughout which the actions and achievements of you and your fellow Pathfinders create an ongoing storyline. Each season consists of at least 28 Pathfinder Society scenarios (short, 4-hour adventures) set in a variety of exotic locations across Golarion.
