Movie Review: Pacific Rim: Uprising

Posted on March 22, 2018 by Brett

Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost, reunites with Mako Mori to lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots, including rival Lambert and 15-year-old hacker Amara, against a new Kaiju threat.

It’s been almost five years since the original Pacific Rim and over those years my love for the original has grown. The giant robot vs. monsters movie is exactly what it said it’d be with crazy fights, lots of actions, and bringing the cult genres to the big screen in a live action film that only Guillermo del Toro can deliver. It was, and is, a fun brainless film.

Enter Pacific Rim: Uprising which attempts to create a franchise out of the cult classic (and it’s obvious this is the goal) but without the creative team of del Toro and fellow screenwriter Travis Beacham. Directed by Steven S. DeKnight with a script by DeKnight, Emily Carmichael, Kira Snyder, and T.S. Nowlin, Pacific Rim: Uprising is the same brainless giant robot fun but somehow made shallower. It’s Pacific Rim via Michael Bay (and that’s not a compliment).

Taking place ten years after the original film, the world hasn’t completely recovered from the destruction of the original and is on edge over the threat of further Kaiju attack. The movie is Pacific Rim: The Next Generation as we’re introduced to new cadets and characters with only a few standing out and showing any personality.

Returning are Burn Gorman as Dr. Hermann Gottlieb, Charlie Day as Dr. Newton Geiszler, and Rinko Kikuchi as Mako Mori. With much of the original cast dead, we’re presented new cadets and new “heroes” to cheer for but none show aspects that make us want to.

Let me get to the good.

There’s some solid use of the drift to teach us about these new characters.

There’s some cool fights and we get to see all sorts of new aspects when it comes to robot battles.

It pays homage to the past while attempting to forge it’s own future, a path similar to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It also does that with the genre as a whole with nods to Godzilla and Gundam alike.

The bad.

The sound quality is all over the place and I had issues understanding dialogue.

They fridge a character.

None of the characters stand out at all. It feels like the majority are background characters devoid of personality and anything that makes them special.

And the last part is what bothers me the most. The new film is another franchise for the entertaining and likeable John Boyega who plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost from the original. We’re also supposed to get another set of eyes we can relate to in Cailee Spaeny‘s Amara Namani, a teenage genius who built her own Jaeger. That character though isn’t given enough to do, or enough growth, and falls short of Mako Mori’s story arc from the original. In fact Namani feels like a cross between Mori and the teenage female tech genius from Transformers: Last Knight.

The new bunch of recruits aren’t interesting or feel like derivatives of the original including two Russians who somehow have less personality than the pair from the first movie. Like teenagers lined up to die in a horror film, we’re given shallow stereotypes/archetypes instead of characters. I don’t care what happens to them at all. Beyond two characters, everyone feels like fodder and background and at points I cheered and hoped for a giant monster to eat them.

And that’s the biggest failure of the film.

There’s an excellent theme here of the next generation saving the world. Set against the real world where kids are speaking up for DACA or against gun violence such as those from Parkland, there’s an interesting theme and concept of Generation X and Millenials handing over the world to Gen Z for them to save it. Act as a guiding hand and a reminder to not make the same mistakes. That’s touched upon but never explored and if it was given just a little attention, the film would be an amazing allegory and perfectly timed for the state of the real world.

Pacific Rim: Uprising feels like half-baked ideas that are never fully realized. Still, if you’re going for giant robots battling monsters, you should be more than happy.

Overall Rating: 6.5

Review: Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift #1

If you’ve spoken to me in person, seen even a glimpse of my social media presence, or followed me on my journey through the Godzilla in Hell series, you know that the kaiju genre is one of my favorite things. I was first in line on opening day for Pacific Rim, and this series is something I’ve been hoping for since we found out ages ago that Guillermo del Toro planned to continue developing the franchise between films. The Tales from Year Zero collection is still safely shrink-wrapped in my room, carefully guarded by my twenty-something kaiju figures, and now at long last I have a copy of Tales from the Drift to kick off my next series of kaiju-related comic book reviews. So, how does Tales hold up compared to the decades-long history of kaiju stories that have come before it? Let’s find out.

Travis Beacham wrote the screenplay for Pacific Rim, as well as the Tales from Year Zero prequel, and he returns to write Tales from the Drift joined by Joshua Hale Fialkov and cements his position as the man who makes this world work. Marcos Marz and Marcelo Maiolo provide illustrations and color, respectively, creating a gorgeous world of massive jaegers and hulking kaiju. Both kaiju and jaegers are drawn with bold lines and bright, solid backgrounds to make them really stand out, making for dynamic and easy to follow fight scenes. In the early stages of the series it isn’t entirely clear where the focus lies – we don’t know much about the human pilots we’re seeing aside from they met when one of the first kaiju exited the Breach and attacked a submarine, and now they’re a married couple taking on alien monsters together. Many kaiju stories leave the humans as relatively undeveloped characters, basic ciphers that hit the plot points they’re required to hit so the story can progress and we can get back to kaiju action, but in these early stages I’m not sure which way Tales is going to go. The first issue opens with an introduction to the married couple who pilot Tacit Ronin, one of the very first jaeger, and spends quite a lot of time on flashbacks explaining how they first met.

The flashbacks are interspersed with present-day monster action but while both timelines are interesting, I found myself wishing the comic would focus on one and stick with it. The problem with exploring a story by alternating timelines is that when in the present day, characters are in danger of drowning, sometimes it’s hard not to think “Do you really have time for a flashback right now?” And then there’s the risk that if the flashbacks don’t make a viewer care about the characters in question, they’ll feel like a waste of time.

At this point, Tales from the Drift is in such an early state that it’s impossible to tell how in-depth it will go when it comes to human character development. Whether we’ll see favorite characters like Mako Mori or Newton Geiszler as the comic progresses is anybody’s guess, given the time jumps we see in the first issue, but the kaiju-versus-robot action is well worth the price of admission and hopefully the human drama will either be just as interesting or mercifully short. Pacific Rim is at its best when a balance between human drama and monster action is found, and if this team can manage that in the comic book series as well then Tales From the Drift will be in great shape.

Preview: Toy News Round-Up

Posted on June 16, 2014 by

Wow, lots of stuff popped up lately. Had some things going on in life and I got a little behind. Hell of a week for that to happen. So here’s the round-up.

Mattel showed off the first ever Star Wars themed Hot Wheels vehicle. This toy will be at SDCC in July. The roadster is designed to look like Darth Vader and comes packaged inside his own lightsaber. The package features red glowing lights, lightsaber sounds and Vader’s trademark heavy breathing.

NECA reveals the next 18″ Jager from Pacific Rim…….Battle-Damaged Gipsy Danger. Gipsy comes ready for battle with the famous Plasma Cannon that lights up AND swivels. The LED lights in the chest and head from the original version make a return. This behemoth is ready to defend the world this September for about $100.

Bandai has taken the wraps off a great new addition to the S.H. Figuarts series……….Star Wars! The first figures out of the gate in 2015 look to be a Stormtrooper and Dath Vader himself. It’s pretty apparent, from my other posts, just how much I love the S.H Figuarts line, and getting Star Wars figures now makes me extremely happy. I can’t wait for a side-by-side review with the Black Series Stormtrooper and Vader. Based on these early pictures, I’ve got a feeling who the winner will be, do you?

In more S.H. Figuarts news, Bandai gives a first look at the Mega Man Zero star, Zero. Loaded with weapons from the series, Zero comes with; Z-Saber, the laser pistol Buster Shot, and the Triple Rod. Zero also gets a shield accessory and the traditional interchangeable expressions and hands. Zero hits in November for around $50.

At the Tokyo Toy Show, Takara displayed the first painted version of the latest Masterpiece Transformer, Ultra Magnus. The quality of the figure looks great, as does the scale. He does look a little bulky at the shoulders and legs. More looks are needed at this figure before judgment is passed. But wow, Ultra Magnus!

To close things off, an entry into the WTF?!?! category.

Factory Entertainment announced this piece for SDCC: Archer – Sterling Archer Tuxedo Action Figure. No words, I have no words. This is a variant of the regular Archer figure that will be released and it looks like THIS?!?! Were they going for a retro style here or trying to mimic the look of the show? Either way, they appear to have missed the mark. I was worried about these when they debuted, but they were early, and I assumed they would improve, they have not. This is a big dissapointment to Archer fans who were looking forward to great figures from a great show. Thankfully, there’s only 1500 of these and if you want to toss away $25 they’ll be available at SDCC in July.
