Marvel’s TEDxTeen 2014 Speech, Plus Free Comics!

On Saturday, March 1st, 2014, the We Are Family Foundation hosted the 5th TEDxTeen conference and Marvel’s own Sana Amanat, editor of Ms. Marvel, Elektra, Captain Marvel and New Warriors presented an energetic and encouraging speech titled “Myths, Misfits & Masks”.

The speech addressed how societal constructs and stereotypes can impact the self-perception and self-worth of individuals—in particular teens and adolescents who may be the most impressionable. How can we manage others expectations of our identities and establish our authentic self? This idea is evaluated through the lens of positive and accessible imagery and storytelling—and comic book stories in particular through their aspirational impact. Enter the X-Men, Spider-Man and now Ms. Marvel – comic book characters in Marvel’s long history of sharing stories about the powers that come with being “different”.

You can check out the video which is now up online.

To celebrate Amanat’s presentation, Marvel  is offering an exclusive FREE digital collection, All-New Marvel Now! Teen Heroes! Head to marvel.com/tedx, add the All-New Marvel Now! Teen Heroes collection to your cart and use the provided promo code TEEN to get your FREE digital collection that includes Ms. Marvel #1, All-New X-Men #1, New Warriors #1 and Nova #1. The offer ends 3/31 11PM EST.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

the white suits #1 coverTomorrow is new comic day and as usual, there’s a lot you’ll find hitting your comic shop’s shelves. With so many comics coming out, what’s worth your hard-earned dollars? That’s where we come in. Here’s this week’s comics that are most likely to provide entertainment and that we’re looking forward to reading.

  • Top Pick: Undertow #1  (Image Comics) – Mixing sci-fi, politics, social commentary, this series puts a new spin on the Atlantis mythos. It’s fresh in both story as well as the look. A combination of both excelling. I full expect it to sell out, so head to your shops early if you want to get a copy.
  • Alex + Ada #4  (Image Comics) – The boy and his bot tale continues. It’s as cute as it is quirky.
  • Curse #2  (BOOM! Studios) – BOOM! brings back the horror in this interesting werewolf story that has a father on the hunt to collect on a reward and save his sick child.
  • Daredevil #36  (Marvel) – It’s Mark Waid’s Daredevil! That is the only reason you need to pick it up. It’s good, really good.
  • Loki: Ragnarok & Roll #1  (BOOM! Studios) – I wasn’t sure what to expect, but having read the first issue, this comedic take on Odin, Thor and Loki is well worth your time and money.
  • The Midas Flesh #3  (BOOM! Studios) – It’s a sci-fi tale with an all-ages spin. This is easily one of my favorite comics so far this year. Every issue has been fun and entertaining, plus the art is just plain awesome.
  • New Warriors #1  (Marvel) – Marvel’s team of kid heroes is back with an interesting line-up. There’s so much history here, that alone makes it a buy. Seeing the team form in Nova has given us a hint as to what to expect, and that’s fun superhero goodness.
  • The Punisher #2  (Marvel) – The first issue blew me away (get it?). Marvel’s gun-toting vigilante is back and better than ever. In the hands if this current creative team, I have nothing but high expectations.
  • Unity#4  (Valiant) – Valiant has brought together some of its biggest players and then shook everything up. This is a publisher where you should just be checking out everything they’re doing.
  • The White Suits #1  (Dark Horse) – Frank Barbiere’s crime/spy series that is as cool in its look as it is for the story. A mysterious team that rocks white suits terrorizes the underworld. The comic left me wanting more and can’t wait to see where this goes. Perfect for fans of crime stories.

Preview: Evolutionaries on the Warpath in New Warriors #2!

If it isn’t human – it dies! Marvel is proud to present a first look at New Warriors #2 – from the creative team of Christopher Yost and Marcus To! Evolution has gone off the rails. And the High Evolutionary and his army of Evolutionaries have taken it upon themselves to put things right – through the complete extermination of all super-powered beings in the Marvel Universe! And it’s up to the New Warriors to stop him – but will they be enough? Their first mission may just be their last! If they want to survive, they’ll have to learn to be a team first – and that’s much easier said than done. Plus, what does the High Evolutionary want with Nova? The answer may surprise you!

Preview: New Faces. New Threats – a First Look at New Warriors #1!

Witness the next generation of the Marvel Universe this February in New Warriors #1 – an all-new action packed ongoing series from blockbuster writer Christopher Yost and red-hot artist Marcus To! New Warriors mainstays Speedball and Justice are getting the band back together with a new team of heroes the likes of which you’ve never seen before!

In an interview with Marvel.com, writer Christopher Yost said:

They’re eight people from different corners of the Marvel Universe, coming together to do the right thing, to be heroes. “They’re not kids, they’re not seasoned heroes for the most part, but they’re idealists. Sometime it’s okay to be a hero for the sake of being a hero; to be with a team because they’re your friends, because it’s fun.

Sometimes the world just needs saving.

Evolution has gone off the rails. There are super humans, mutants, Inhumans, clones, aliens, and more everywhere you turn. Humanity no longer exists as the dominant life form on the planet. And not everyone is pleased! The High Evolutionary has raised an army to combat these “superior” beings – through complete extermination!

Now, Speedball, Justice, Nova, Scarlet Spider, Sun Girl, Hummingbird and more must stand together against the rising tide.
